Soil Stack and Soil Pipe Installation: 110mm Soil Pipe, Push-Fit Fittings, and Part H Compliance

The soil stack is the backbone of any domestic drainage system. Get it right and the building drains silently for decades. Get it wrong and you're dealing with gurgling traps, blocked stacks, and Building Control rejections. This guide covers everything a UK plumber needs to know about soil pipe systems — materials, jointing, stack sizing, ventilation, and compliance with Approved Document H.

1. What Is a Soil Stack?

A soil stack (also called a soil and vent pipe, or SVP) is the main vertical pipe that carries waste from WC pans, urinals, and sometimes sinks/baths directly to the underground drain. In a two-storey house, the stack typically runs externally or internally, connecting all sanitary fittings on its way from roof level (where it vents to atmosphere) down to the below-ground drain at the foot of the stack.

Key distinction:

  • Soil pipe: carries foul water containing solids (WC waste, urinal waste)
  • Waste pipe: carries grey water from baths, basins, showers, sinks (no solids)
  • Combined stack: both types discharge into a single stack (most common in modern UK dwellings)

2. Approved Document H — Key Requirements

Building Regulations Approved Document H (Drainage and Waste Disposal) sets out the minimum standards. Any new or replacement soil stack is notifiable work. Key requirements include:

Stack Diameter

  • Minimum 75mm diameter for a single WC on a ground floor (short connection to drain)
  • 100mm (nominal 110mm OD) required for any stack serving more than one WC, or any first-floor or above WC
  • 110mm is the standard for virtually all domestic work in the UK

Stack Offset

Offsets in the section of stack receiving discharge from WCs are not permitted in the wet portion of the stack (the section where branches discharge). Any necessary offsets must be in the dry section above the highest branch.

Branch Connections

  • WC branches must connect at 92.5° (87.5° swept) to the stack — never a sharp 90° tee
  • Waste branches (bath, basin, shower) connect via swept 135° or 45° branches
  • Branch lengths must not exceed limits (see Section 5 below)

Ventilation

The stack must be open to atmosphere at its top to prevent siphonage of trap water seals. Options:

  • Open vent: stack terminates above eaves with an open end, minimum 900mm from any opening window at same level
  • Air admittance valve (AAV): permits air entry but prevents egress — acceptable for internal stacks in England and Wales under BS EN 12380, but the drainage system must still have at least one open vent point

Rodding Access

An access point (rodding eye or access cover) must be provided near the foot of the stack, within 600mm of any change in direction, and at maximum 45m intervals in long runs.

3. Materials: PVC-U vs Cast Iron

PVC-U (uPVC) — Modern Standard

Grey or black PVC-U is the default for new domestic installations. Available in push-fit (ring seal) and solvent weld variants:

  • Ring seal push-fit: Quick to assemble, allows for thermal movement, easily disassembled. Use for external stacks and where movement is expected. Requires proper lubrication and depth insertion marks.
  • Solvent weld: Permanent, used where vibration or movement is a concern (e.g., internal stacks in partition walls). Requires proper surface preparation and solvent cement.

Standard OD for soil pipe in the UK is 110mm (nominally called "4-inch" from its imperial heritage). This is the outside diameter — the bore is approximately 103mm.

Cast Iron — Existing Buildings and Heritage

Cast iron stacks are common in pre-1970 buildings. They use spigot and socket joints packed with lead wool or proprietary rubber couplers. When repairing or extending, you can interface with cast iron using rubber compression couplings (e.g., Fernco or Multikwik adaptors).

HDPE — Higher Specification Installations

High-density polyethylene (HDPE, e.g., Geberit Silent-db20) is used where noise is critical (e.g., flats, hotels). It offers significantly better acoustic performance than standard uPVC. Jointing is via electrofusion or push-fit rubber ring systems.

4. Fittings and Connections

Stack Base Connections

The foot of the stack must transition to underground drainage using a swept bend — not a sharp 90° knuckle bend. Use a large-radius bend or two 135° bends to achieve the direction change. This prevents blockages and pressure surges that can blow trap seals on ground floor fittings.

  • Rest bend: has a flat base for support when passing through a concrete floor slab
  • Access bend: includes a screwed access point at the base — useful for clearing blockages

Branch Connections

Boss adaptors allow you to add a branch connection to an existing stack without cutting it — drill a hole to the boss size, clamp the saddle boss, and connect a 32mm or 40mm waste pipe. Use sparingly — they create turbulence compared to purpose-made branch fittings.

Stack Connectors

  • Straight couplings: jointing pipe lengths (push-fit or solvent weld)
  • Offset couplings: small offsets (typically 100–150mm) to clear obstacles
  • Expansion couplings: allow thermal movement — required on long external runs exposed to temperature extremes

5. Branch Lengths and Gradients

Approved Document H specifies maximum branch lengths from each appliance to the stack (for unventilated branches):

Note: Where branches exceed these lengths, a ventilation pipe (vent stack or running trap) must be added, or the pipe size increased. This is common in commercial/apartment block installations.

6. Stack Installation — Step by Step

Planning

  1. Determine stack route — internal (quieter, more protected) vs external
  2. Mark all branch connection points based on fixture positions
  3. Calculate offsets required to clear structural elements
  4. Check roof or soffit penetration requirements for vent termination

Setting Out

  1. Establish the drain invert level at the foot of the stack — this dictates your starting height
  2. Mark pipe centres on wall using a plumb bob or spirit level
  3. Mark support clip positions — at maximum 1.2m centres for 110mm uPVC, plus within 150mm of every joint

Cutting and Deburring

  • Cut uPVC pipe square using a mitre box and fine-toothed hacksaw, or a powered pipe cutter
  • Deburr the cut end with a file or deburring tool — a rough edge will damage the rubber ring seal
  • Chamfer the leading edge at 15° to ease insertion into sockets
  • Mark an insertion depth line on the pipe (typically 70–80mm into the socket) — mark back 10mm from this to allow for thermal expansion gap

Push-Fit Assembly

  1. Check the rubber ring seal is correctly seated in the socket groove — not twisted or displaced
  2. Apply silicone lubricant or washing-up liquid to the pipe chamfer and ring seal
  3. Push the pipe into the socket up to the insertion depth mark
  4. Pull back 10mm to the thermal expansion gap mark — this is critical
  5. Confirm the rubber ring is not extruded from the socket

Pipe Clips and Fixings

Support clips must be correctly sized for 110mm OD pipe. Use:

  • Single-bolt pipe clips: for fixing to masonry walls, 1.2m max centres
  • Spacing collars: when routing adjacent to walls — maintain 25mm minimum clearance for thermal movement
  • Holderbats: traditional cast iron support detail — still used on external stacks for heritage compatibility

Do not over-tighten clips on uPVC — the pipe must be free to move axially. Clips should grip the pipe but allow longitudinal sliding.

Stack Vent Termination

  • Terminate minimum 900mm above any opening window within 3m horizontally
  • Use a wire balloon or open-end stack vent cowl to prevent bird entry
  • For internal stacks, use a compliant AAV at the top — ensure access for maintenance

7. Connecting to Underground Drainage

The soil stack terminates at a below-ground 110mm drainage run. The transition occurs via an underground access fitting or inspection chamber. Key points:

  • The above-ground 110mm uPVC pipes directly fit underground 110mm drainage fittings in most systems
  • Where cast iron underground drainage is present, use a flexible rubber coupling (e.g., Fernco or Multikwik) to join
  • Ensure the underground run has a continuous fall (minimum 1:80 for 100mm pipes) to the public sewer or septic tank
  • The foot of the stack should connect to an inspection chamber accessible for rodding — the first chamber should be within 6m of the foot of the stack

8. Testing the Installation

Water Test

Fill the stack from the highest point while checking for leaks at all joints and branch connections. Note: air test is preferred by many Building Control inspectors for soil systems.

Air Test

  1. Plug all openings (stack top, branch connections, drain connection)
  2. Inflate to 38mm water gauge pressure using a manometer and test pump
  3. Leave for 3 minutes — pressure must not drop more than 5mm
  4. If pressure drops, check all joints systematically using soapy water

Trap Seal Test

After installation is complete and all appliances connected, flush all WCs simultaneously and run all waste appliances. Check all trap water seals remain intact — no gurgling or siphonage. This confirms the ventilation is adequate.

9. Common Faults and How to Avoid Them

10. Notifiable Work and Building Control

Under Part H of the Building Regulations, drainage work in England and Wales is notifiable. This means:

  • Submit a Building Regulations application before starting work (Building Notice or Full Plans)
  • Inspection may be required at foundation level, before backfilling any underground drain, and at completion
  • Obtain a completion certificate — essential for house sale and future insurance claims

In Scotland, drainage is covered by Section 3 of the Building Standards (Technical Handbooks). In Northern Ireland, Technical Booklet N applies.
