32mm and 40mm Waste Pipe: Basin, Bath, and Shower Drainage for Plumbers
Selecting the correct waste pipe size is one of those jobs that looks straightforward until you install the wrong diameter, trigger a Part H non-compliance, or spend an afternoon diagnosing a slow-draining bath. This guide covers everything a plumber needs to know about 32mm and 40mm plastic waste pipe — sizing rules, material choice, gradients, trap requirements, and common mistakes — with reference to BS EN 12056-2 and Building Regulations Approved Document H.
Why Waste Pipe Size Matters
Waste pipe from appliances is classified as secondary waste ventilated pipework under BS EN 12056-2. The pipe diameter must match the appliance discharge rate, or you get one of two failure modes:
- Too small: The pipe runs full, self-siphonage depressurises the trap, breaks the water seal, and allows foul air back into the room.
- Too large: Low-volume appliances (basins) cannot maintain the self-cleansing velocity needed to carry solids. Waste sits in the pipe and decomposes.
Getting the sizing right the first time prevents callbacks and Part H failures on completion sign-off.
Which Appliance Uses Which Size?
32mm Waste Pipe
32mm is the correct diameter for low-flow appliances where discharge rates are modest:
- Wash hand basins (washbasins) — the standard domestic and commercial basin
- Bidets
- Urinals (individual stall type)
BS EN 12056-2 Table B.1 gives a discharge unit (DU) of 0.3 for a single-basin, which maps to a 32mm pipe at a flow of approximately 0.5 litres per second. This is also why basin bottle traps and tubular P-traps are supplied with a 32mm outlet as standard.
Do not use 32mm for baths, showers, or kitchen sinks. These appliances deliver higher instantaneous flows that will cause the pipe to choke, depressurising the trap seal.
40mm Waste Pipe
40mm is the workhorse size for most domestic sanitary appliances:
- Baths — 40mm at 1:45 (1.3°) minimum gradient
- Shower trays — 40mm standard; large-format trays may need 50mm if the trap has a low-profile weir
- Kitchen sinks — 40mm; washing machine standpipes also typically 40mm
- Dishwashers — drain hose to 40mm standpipe or under-sink trap
- Utility sinks / Belfast sinks
- Washing machine standpipe — 40mm, minimum 600mm height, max 900mm (to prevent siphonage)
At 40mm you have enough pipe cross-section to handle the higher DU values: a bath (DU 0.6), shower (DU 0.6), and kitchen sink (DU 0.6) per BS EN 12056-2 are all correctly served by a single 40mm branch.
50mm Waste Pipe

Gradient (Fall) Requirements
Gradient is not optional — it is a legal requirement under Part H. Low-gradient waste pipes run slowly, allow suspended solids to settle, and block. Steep gradients flush so fast that solids outrun the liquid, producing the same result.

Practical tip: Aim for 1:40 on 32mm and 1:40 to 1:45 on 40mm. A 2m basin run needs to drop roughly 50mm from trap outlet to stack — achievable in most stud or timber-floor situations. Mark the stack entry point before chasing or drilling.
Maximum Branch Length
Part H Table 1 gives maximum lengths for unventilated branch pipes (non-system H drainage):

Exceed these limits without providing additional ventilation (air admittance valve or open-vent branch) and you risk chronic trap siphonage. On renovations with long horizontal runs — particularly at ground-floor bathroom additions or kitchen extensions — check the measurement from trap outlet to stack inlet, not just the pipe run length.

Materials: Solvent Weld vs Push-Fit
Both are compliant under Part H. Your choice depends on site conditions and installation permanence.
Solvent Weld Waste Pipe
White or grey uPVC pipe joined with solvent cement. Once set, the joint is permanent and rigid.
Advantages:
- Strongest joint — zero pull-out risk
- Slimmer fitting profile — easier in tight runs between joists
- Preferred in commercial or high-use locations (kitchen, busy washroom)
- Joint integrity does not degrade over time
Disadvantages:
- No adjustment once cement grabs (~30–60 seconds open time)
- Requires primer and cement; working in confined spaces needs ventilation
- Cannot dismantle for access without cutting
How to make a solvent weld joint (32mm/40mm):
- Cut pipe square using a pipe shear or hacksaw and mite box; deburr inside and outside with abrasive paper or deburring tool
- Dry-fit to confirm alignment
- Apply primer to socket and spigot; allow 15 seconds to flash off
- Apply solvent cement to both surfaces; push fitting home immediately with a slight quarter-turn
- Hold for 30 seconds; wipe excess cement with a cloth
- Allow 24 hours before water testing (or per cement manufacturer's instructions)
Push-Fit Waste Pipe
White or grey pipe with rubber ring-seal push-fit fittings (commonly ABS or PP).
Advantages:
- Fast to install — no cement, no waiting
- Adjustable and demountable for maintenance access
- Accommodates minor thermal movement
- Good for domestic sink, bath, and basin runs where access is maintained
Disadvantages:
- Requires an expansion loop or sufficient free length to allow thermal movement without pushing the pipe out of the fitting
- Seal can degrade if solvent contamination occurs (from solvent-welded traps or drain cleaners)
- Requires correct insertion depth mark — under-insertion of pipe past seal is the most common leak cause
Push-fit installation note: Mark the insertion depth on the pipe before fitting. The pipe must engage fully past the ring seal. On 40mm push-fit, the mark is typically 28–35mm from the pipe end depending on the fitting make.

- 40mm reducer to 32mm — where a 40mm run from a bath reduces to 32mm before the stack (non-compliant in most scenarios; verify your calculation)
- 40mm boss adaptor / solvent boss — for connecting into 110mm soil stack via a boss

Trap Requirements
Every sanitary appliance must have a trap. Part H and BS EN 12056-2 specify minimum seal depths:

A 75mm seal depth is preferred wherever possible — it provides more reserve against siphonage than the 50mm minimum. Baths are the exception because floor-to-trap clearance is physically limited on standard bath frames.

Connecting to the Soil Stack
Waste branches connect to the 110mm soil stack via a swept boss connector or a prefabricated boss adaptor spigot moulded into the stack. Key rules:
- Basin (32mm) — sweep the branch entry in the direction of flow; do not tee in at 90° to the stack (use a 45° swept entry boss)
- Bath/shower (40mm) — sweep entry, same rule
- Entry level: branch connection should be above the WC branch connection on the stack, or at a separate level if a WC is draining into the same stack section
- Minimum 200mm between the WC spigot connection and the lowest point of any basin or bath branch entering the same stack (to prevent cross-contamination of trap seals from WC flush turbulence)

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Wrong size trap outlet
Basin bottle traps come with both 32mm and 40mm compression outlets, or a 40mm OD waste outlet. Check before buying the pipe — mixing a 32mm push-fit elbow onto a 40mm bottle trap spigot will either not fit or leak. Manufacturers publish the outlet diameter in the spec sheet.
Insufficient gradient
A bath run at 1:100 (10mm per metre) looks fine on pressure test day. Six months later, soap and hair build up and the bath drains slowly. Always target 1:40 or steeper; never less than 1:45 on 40mm.
Solvent weld on misaligned pipes
Solvent cement grabs in under 30 seconds. If the fitting is misaligned when you push it home, you will cut it out and redo it. Use a dry run every time on complex sequences. Mark alignment with a pen across the joint before priming so you can confirm correct angular orientation on the real join.
Push-fit pipe not fully inserted
The most common cause of weeping push-fit waste joints is the pipe not reaching full insertion depth. The mark on the pipe should be visible at the fitting face after assembly. Lubricate the rubber seal with washing-up liquid to ease insertion on 40mm (dry-fitting 40mm ring-seal is hard going).
Using waste pipe fittings for soil (110mm) work
32mm and 40mm solvent weld cement is not interchangeable with 110mm soil pipe solvent weld cement. They use different formulations. Do not mix them.
Long runs without adequate support
uPVC waste pipe has a coefficient of thermal expansion of approximately 0.06mm/m/°C. A 3m kitchen sink run seeing a 20°C temperature differential will expand approximately 3.6mm. At push-fit, build in an expansion loop or use the sliding cup feature on ring-seal fittings. At solvent weld, ensure that the pipe can expand into a socket at one end without pushing the other end off a boss connector.
When to Use Access Fittings
On runs exceeding 2m, or where there is any risk of blockage (kitchen waste especially), install an access fitting — typically a cleaning eye (solvent weld screw cap) at the furthest point from the stack, or at any sharp change of direction. Wet Rooms and Tiled Showers
Wet room and tiled shower waste outlets typically use a 40mm through-floor or through-screed waste connection. Low-profile wetroom traps (50mm seal depth, 40mm outlet) are used where under-floor screed depth is limited.
