50mm vs 32mm Waste Pipe: Which Size Do You Need?

If you've ever grabbed the wrong waste pipe off the shelf and had to go back to the merchant, this guide is for you. The difference between 32mm and 50mm waste pipe is more than just diameter — they serve different jobs, and fitting the wrong size means either a blocked drain or a leaking joint.

Here's exactly when to use each one.

What is 32mm Waste Pipe Used For?

32mm is the standard size for basin and bath waste outlets. Most basins have a 32mm (1¼") outlet, and most standard baths use the same. If you're running a new waste from a bathroom sink or bath, 32mm is what you need.

Common applications for 32mm waste pipe:

  • Wash hand basins (standard)
  • Baths (standard)
  • Bidets
  • Washing machine standpipes (some installations)

The key thing to remember: 32mm waste pipe is rated for the flow from a single, low-volume outlet. A basin empties over 10–20 seconds. The pipe and fittings are designed for that kind of flow.

What is 50mm Waste Pipe Used For?

50mm (2") waste pipe handles heavier flow: shower trays, kitchen sinks, and multi-outlet drainage stacks. It's also the standard size for most underground connections to a soil stack.

Common applications for 50mm waste pipe:

  • Shower trays and shower cubicles
  • Kitchen sinks (especially deep bowls or twin bowls)
  • Utility sinks and Belfast sinks
  • Bath waste where high flow is expected
  • Horizontal runs connecting multiple outlets to a soil stack

Because a shower empties fast — especially walk-in power showers — 32mm won't keep up. Even with a low-flow shower head, you're still pushing more water faster than a basin ever would. Trying to run a shower waste on 32mm is a call-back job waiting to happen.

Aquaflow 50mm Fittings: The Trade Standard

The Aquaflow 50mm fittings range is what most plumbers in London reach for. The 50mm fittings are the consistent sellers at our trade counter — access plugs and straight couplings are the two highest-volume products we move month after month.

Why? Because solvent weld connections are reliable and inspectable. If there's an issue, you can find it. The Aquaflow 50mm access plug with screw cap in particular is a sensible spec on any drainage run longer than a couple of metres — it gives you a cleanout point without having to break into the wall or floor.

All Aquaflow 50mm fittings are in stock at our Acton trade counter for same-day collection.

Part H and Building Regulations: What Matters for Waste Pipe Sizing

Under Part H of the Building Regulations (drainage), waste pipe sizing must be adequate for the outlet it serves. The general principle for internal waste systems is:

  • Basin/bath outlets: 32mm minimum
  • Sink/shower/utility outlets: 40mm–50mm
  • Multi-branch horizontal runs: 50mm

If you're installing a wet room or a shower room with more than one outlet, run 50mm back to the stack. It costs a few pence more in pipe but saves you a service visit.

Solvent Weld vs Push-Fit: Quick Note

Both 32mm and 50mm waste pipe comes in solvent weld and push-fit options. For built-in runs (behind tiles, under floors), solvent weld is the professional spec — it won't pull apart under thermal expansion. Push-fit is faster and fine for exposed runs under a sink where you can get to it.

The Aquaflow fittings at APM are solvent weld and sit alongside our wider soil pipe and fittings range. For push-fit alternatives, ask at the counter — we keep both in stock.

Quick Reference: 32mm or 50mm?

Outlet Recommended size
Wash hand basin 32mm
Bath 32mm
Shower tray / cubicle 50mm
Kitchen sink 50mm
Utility / Belfast sink 50mm
Multi-outlet horizontal run 50mm

When in doubt, go up. An oversized waste pipe won't cause you problems. An undersized one will.
