When you're fitting a split air conditioning unit and gravity drainage isn't an option, a condensate removal pump for air conditioning is non-negotiable. The unit will produce condensate every time it runs — and if there's nowhere for that water to go, you'll have a leak on your hands before the first service call. Why AC Units Need a Condensate Removal Pump
A wall-mounted split or ceiling cassette produces condensate as a by-product of cooling. In a loft or server room installation, or anywhere a freestanding drain tray isn't possible, that water has to go somewhere upward — over a ceiling void, into a soil stack, or to a drain higher than the unit's drip tray. Gravity won't help you there. A condensate removal pump lifts the water continuously, controlled by a float switch inside the reservoir, and shuts down the AC unit via an alarm wire if the float runs too high (a secondary safety backstop against overflow).
This is a separate job from boiler condensate management. A boiler condensate pipe works under positive pressure and runs to the nearest soil stack or external drain — different product, different rules. For AC and heat pump indoor units, you're looking for a compact pump that fits within the unit casing or clips to the refrigerant pipework, with a low enough noise output to avoid complaints in a bedroom or boardroom.
Key Specs to Check Before You Order
Three numbers matter when specifying a condensate pump for an AC installation:
- Flow rate (L/h): Match to the unit's condensate output at full load. Most wall-mounted residential splits produce 0.5–3 L/h. Commercial cassettes and ducted units can produce significantly more. Apply a 1.5× safety factor on flow rate when you're uncertain.
- Maximum head (metres): The vertical lift to your discharge point. Don't forget friction losses in the discharge pipe — manufacturer head specs assume clean, unobstructed tubing. Real-world head is typically 80–85% of rated maximum.
- Sound level (dB(A)): In a bedroom or office, anything above 25 dB(A) will generate complaints. The Aspen Silent+ range runs at 16 dB(A) — effectively silent at 1 metre. Standard pumps typically run 25–35 dB(A).
Also confirm supply voltage (100–250V universal on most Aspen units) and whether the pump needs a separate float alarm wire into the AC indoor unit's alarm terminals — most do.

It's the one to specify for bedrooms, hotel rooms, consulting rooms, or any AC installation where noise is a genuine client concern. The Gen 5 uses capacitance sensing and a rotary diaphragm pump, rated to 10m head and 35 L/h, with plug-and-play cabling and a slim reservoir that fits behind most indoor unit panels. Aspen Mini Orange (FP2212) — Industry Standard for Residential Splits
The Aspen Mini Orange is the most widely fitted condensate pump in the UK. It's the workhorse: compact, reliable, and cost-effective for standard wall-mounted residential and light commercial splits where noise isn't a primary concern. Max head 10m, rated for units up to 14 kW. If you're doing a domestic lounge or bedroom where the client isn't particularly noise sensitive, or a commercial unit where the pump is hidden in a ceiling void, the Mini Orange is the default. Simple installation — reservoir, pump, float, discharge and alarm wire.
Aspen Mini Aqua 2 (FP3002) — Mid-Range Performance
The Aspen Mini Aqua 2 sits between the Mini Orange and the Silent+ on both spec and price. It uses Aspen's updated diaphragm design and handles systems up to 30 kW with improved efficiency versus the original Mini Aqua. A solid choice for multi-room residential or light commercial installations where you need a step up from the Mini Orange without going full Silent+.
Aspen Mini Blanc Deluxe (FP1080/2) — Compact for Tight Spaces
The Aspen Mini Blanc Deluxe has a particularly slim profile, designed to fit inside or immediately adjacent to the indoor unit without breaking the casing line. It's the choice when you're working in a tight ceiling cassette installation or a wall-mounted unit with very limited space at the drain connection. Rated to 10m head. If you've ever had to bodge a pump installation because the reservoir wouldn't fit, specify the Blanc Deluxe from the start.
Aspen MAX Hi-Flow Low Profile Tank Pump (FP3349) — Commercial and VRF Systems
The Aspen MAX Hi-Flow Low Profile is for ceiling cassettes, air handling units, fan coil units, and commercial VRF indoor units with higher condensate outputs. Tank-style reservoir with greater capacity, high flow rate, and the same reliable float-switch and alarm-wire architecture. When the unit is producing significantly more than a standard 2.5 kW domestic split, this is the model to go to.
How to Install a Condensate Removal Pump for Air Conditioning
Installation is straightforward but there are a few points that cause problems if you miss them:
- Position the reservoir at or below the unit drain connection. The inlet pipe must slope continuously down into the reservoir — any upward section or trap creates an airlock that causes intermittent operation and nuisance float-alarm trips.
- Keep the inlet pipe short. Longer than 1m of inlet pipework is asking for blockage and debris ingress. If the run has to be longer, increase the pipe diameter and ensure a continuous fall.
- Connect the alarm wire. The float alarm output must connect to the AC indoor unit's alarm terminal (CN ALARM or equivalent). When the float trips, the unit shuts off. This is the safety backstop — if the discharge pipe blocks, the unit stops rather than overflowing.
- Discharge pipe — route with fall where possible. Even though the pump has a maximum head of 10m, keep the discharge run as short and direct as possible. Horizontal runs with adequate fall to the soil stack or drain are more reliable than long near-vertical runs with bends.
- Test the float alarm before commissioning. Pour water into the reservoir until the float trips and confirm the unit shuts down correctly. Commission the alarm function, not just the pump operation.
Maintenance and Fault-Finding
Condensate pump failures are one of the most common call-backs on AC installs. The failure modes are almost always the same:
- Blocked inlet filter: Most Aspen pumps have a filter on the inlet or inside the reservoir. Clean this annually or whenever you service the AC unit. A blocked filter starves the pump and causes intermittent operation.
- Algae and biofilm build-up: Condensate water is warm and slow-moving — ideal for algae growth. Use condensate pump treatment tablets in the reservoir at each service. Aspen's own treatment tabs are designed for this.
- Blocked discharge pipe: Often caused by algae or lime-scale in the discharge tubing. Replace the clear PVC discharge tube at service if it's discoloured or has visible build-up.
- Pump not activating: Check the float is moving freely. Grit or scale can jam the float arm. Clean the reservoir and check the float mechanism before replacing the pump.
