Taps are among the most frequently replaced plumbing fittings in domestic and commercial properties. Whether you are fitting a new bathroom suite, replacing worn pillar taps, or troubleshooting a dripping mixer, understanding tap types, WRAS compliance, cartridge identification, and correct installation technique is essential for clean, leak-free results. This guide covers basin and bath taps for UK plumbers, from quarter-turn ceramic disc valves to monobloc mixers and wall-mounted bath fillers.
Types of Bath and Basin Taps
The UK market offers several tap configurations, each suited to specific installations and deck layouts.
Pillar Taps
Pillar taps fit through a single 22mm deck hole and are sold in pairs — one hot, one cold. They use a rising spindle with a rubber washer seat, or more commonly today a ceramic disc cartridge. Pillar taps are standard on two-hole basin installations and traditional bath decks. Hot is always on the left, cold on the right, per BS EN 31 and general UK convention.
Monobloc Basin Mixer Taps
A monobloc mixer fits through a single 35mm deck hole and blends hot and cold water in the body of the tap, delivering a single mixed stream. Most modern basins are drilled for monobloc installation. The mixer body contains either two separate ceramic disc cartridges (one per side) or a single thermostatic cartridge. A pop-up waste mechanism is usually integrated, operated by a click-rod or push-button.
Bath Mixer Taps
Bath mixers fit a pair of 22mm deck holes at 180mm centres (the standard UK bath tap hole spacing) and incorporate a central spout. Many include a shower diverter allowing connection of a hand-held shower hose via a flexible. Bath mixer cartridges are typically quarter-turn ceramic discs, sized 40mm or 46mm depending on manufacturer.
Bath Filler Taps
Bath fillers combine hot and cold supply through a deck-mounted spout, usually with a wall-mounted or deck-mounted thermostatic valve. Floor-standing bath fillers (free-standing taps) require floor-outlet pipe runs and are common in high-specification bathrooms. Exposed bath-shower mixer sets typically include an anti-scalding thermostatic cartridge rated to BS EN 1111 or WRAS-approved equivalent.
Wall-Mounted Taps
Wall-mounted basin or bath taps require back-plate elbow fittings or concealed valve bodies installed in the wall during the first fix. These are popular in wet room and feature basin installations. Wall centres must align precisely with the tap body — standard UK spacing is 150mm for basin taps and 180mm for bath. Backplates are typically 1/2 inch BSP female, connecting to 15mm supply pipework.
Thermostatic Bar Mixer Showers
Although primarily shower valves, thermostatic bar mixers are often supplied alongside bath installations to provide a bath-fill and shower function from a single wall valve. Ceramic Disc vs Washered Taps
Traditional pillar taps use a rubber or synthetic washer pressed against a brass seat. Turning the handle compresses the washer, stopping flow. Washered taps require more turns to operate (typically three to four) and the washer deteriorates over time, leading to dripping. Reseating the tap seat with a tap reseating tool restores the seating surface when washer replacement alone does not cure a drip.
Ceramic disc cartridges use two precision-machined aluminium oxide discs with micro-ground faces. Rotating one disc relative to the other opens or closes ports machined into the disc faces. Quarter-turn operation is the defining feature — 90 degrees from fully closed to fully open. Ceramic discs last many years under normal domestic conditions, are self-lubricating, and do not require washer replacement. When a ceramic disc tap drips or becomes stiff, the cartridge is replaced as a unit.
Identify cartridge type by brand, cartridge diameter, number of ports, and spindle profile. Common UK cartridge diameters for basin taps are 35mm (low-flow) and 40mm. Bath tap cartridges are commonly 40mm or 46mm. Always source exact replacement cartridges — mixing brands or diameters will cause leaks or non-operation.
WRAS Compliance and Part G Requirements
Any tap or valve connected to the mains cold water or hot water supply must be WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) approved. WRAS approval confirms the product does not contaminate drinking water, meets pressure and temperature ratings under UK Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, and is fit for purpose. Look for the WRAS mark on the tap body or packaging, or check the WRAS product approval database.
Part G of the Building Regulations (Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency) requires that basin taps in new dwellings have a maximum flow rate of 8 litres per minute at 3 bar, and bath-fill taps a maximum of 12 litres per minute. Most WRAS-approved taps for the UK domestic market meet these limits. Flow restrictors or aerators can be fitted downstream to reduce flow where needed.
For hot water at taps serving baths and basins used by vulnerable persons, BS 8558 and Part G recommend a maximum delivered temperature of 48°C at the outlet. Tap Installation — Step by Step
Tools and Materials
- Basin wrench or back-nut socket spanner (for access under basin)
- Adjustable spanner
- PTFE tape
- Flexible tap connectors (15mm to 1/2 inch BSP, straight or angled)
- Isolation valves (in-line, 15mm)
- Tap fitting kit (back-nut, washer, top-hat washer, and tail)
- Silicone sealant (neutral cure, sanitary grade)
Fitting a Monobloc Basin Mixer
- Isolate hot and cold supplies at the isolation valves beneath the basin. Confirm isolation by opening the tap fully — no flow should result.
- Remove the existing tap. Use a back-nut socket or basin wrench to undo the back-nut beneath the basin deck. Note the order of washers, spacers, and back-nut for reassembly.
- Feed the new tap body through the deck hole. On most monoblocs a top-hat rubber washer sits between the tap base and the ceramic or acrylic basin to prevent cracking. Do not overtighten — hand-tight plus a quarter turn with the back-nut tool is sufficient.
- Wrap 1/2 inch BSP male tap tails with three turns of PTFE tape (clockwise viewed from the end). Connect flexible tap connectors to the tap tails, then to the hot and cold isolation valves. Hot is normally the left-hand tail, cold the right.
- If the tap includes a pop-up waste rod, feed the chrome click-rod down through the spout body and connect to the pop-up waste crossbar using the linkage clip provided. Adjust the rod length so the waste closes fully when the button is pressed.
- Slowly open the isolation valves. Check for leaks at all connections. Tighten a quarter turn further if any weeping is seen.
- Apply a bead of neutral-cure silicone around the tap base where it meets the basin deck, if required by the manufacturer.
Fitting Pillar Taps to a Bath
- Isolate hot and cold supplies. Bath taps are often fed from 22mm pipework — ensure appropriate 22mm to 15mm (or 22mm to 1/2 inch BSP) reducing connectors are available if the tap tails are 15mm.
- Fit each pillar tap through its respective deck hole with a top-hat washer beneath the tap base. Secure the back-nut from below. On cast iron or enamel baths, use a large plastic or rubber top-hat washer to protect the bath surface.
- Connect flexible tap connectors from the tap tails to the supply pipework. Use 22mm or 15mm flexibles as appropriate. PTFE all BSP threaded joints.
- Restore supply. Check operation — the tap should turn freely and stop dripping within a quarter turn on a ceramic disc type.
Replacing a Ceramic Disc Cartridge
A quarter-turn tap that drips when closed, or will not stop running, almost always requires a cartridge swap rather than a repair. Cartridge replacement takes 15–20 minutes per tap.
- Isolate the supply and open the tap to release residual pressure.
- Remove the handle. Most modern tap handles are secured by a grub screw concealed under a hot/cold index cap on the top of the handle. Prise the cap off with a fine flathead screwdriver, undo the grub screw (usually 2.5mm or 3mm hex), and pull the handle off the spindle.
- Unscrew the shroud or cover plate if present to expose the cartridge retaining nut. Use an adjustable spanner or appropriate socket to undo the cartridge retaining nut. On some taps the retaining nut is also the body cap — unscrew it fully to withdraw the cartridge.
- Note the cartridge orientation before removal — the hot port must align with the hot inlet when reassembled. Many cartridges are indexed with a flat or a D-profile spindle to prevent incorrect assembly.
- Remove the old cartridge. Measure the body diameter, the cartridge height, and note the number of ports and spindle type. Take the old cartridge to the supplier or photograph it before ordering a replacement.
- Insert the new cartridge. Do not use PTFE or sealant on the cartridge body — ceramic disc cartridges seal against O-rings moulded into the cartridge. Lightly lubricate O-rings with silicone grease before fitting.
- Refit the retaining nut — firm but do not overtighten. Reassemble handle, grub screw, and cap.
- Restore supply slowly. Test operation and check for leaks at the cartridge body.
Common Tap Faults and Remedies
Dripping at Spout When Closed
On washered taps: replace washer and inspect seat — regrind if pitted. On ceramic disc taps: replace cartridge. Rarely, hard water scale deposits on the disc face cause a leak that is temporarily cured by cleaning with white vinegar, but cartridge replacement is the durable fix.
Leaking at Base of Tap Body
Usually caused by a failed O-ring on the cartridge body, or a cracked tap body. Replace the cartridge O-ring or the full cartridge. If the tap body is cracked, replace the tap.
Stiff Handle Operation
Worn or dried-out O-rings on the cartridge cause increased friction. Replacing the cartridge resolves stiffness. Do not lubricate with petroleum-based grease — use only silicone grease compatible with rubber.
Low Flow from Tap
Check the aerator (the flow restrictor and mesh insert at the spout outlet). Unscrew the aerator (often hand-tight or with a coin), clean debris from the mesh filter, and refit. Low pressure at the tap itself may indicate a partially closed isolation valve, a blocked flexible connector, or system pressure issues.
Knocking or Vibration (Water Hammer)
Quarter-turn ceramic disc taps can cause water hammer if closed too rapidly. Fit a water hammer arrestor at the supply connection, or reduce supply pressure with a pressure-reducing valve. See the flexible tap connectors and isolation valves guide for arrestor options.
Pop-Up Wastes and Click-Wastes
Basin monobloc taps typically include a pop-up waste assembly. The waste body fits into the basin outlet hole and connects to the trap below. A horizontal pivot rod links the pop-up plug to the click-rod descending from the spout body. Adjust the pivot rod clip position to set plug travel — too loose and the plug will not seal; too tight and it will not open fully.
Click-wastes (push-button wastes) in baths and basins operate without a tap-rod linkage and are suitable for use with taps that do not include a pop-up mechanism. The waste plug clicks down to seal and clicks up to drain. Rubber seating rings on click-waste plugs deteriorate over time and can be replaced separately without replacing the full waste body. Isolation and Service Valves
Every tap installation should include an accessible isolation valve on both hot and cold supplies within 300mm of the tap. The isolation valve allows the tap to be serviced without draining the entire system. Quarter-turn ceramic in-line valves with a flat-head slot are the standard choice — slot parallel to flow = open, slot perpendicular = closed. Use WRAS-approved isolation valves rated to the supply pressure and temperature.
