Embrass Peerless 1 1/4-inch slotted gold basin waste

Bathroom Basin Waste Assemblies: Pop-Up Wastes, Click-Clack Wastes, and Slotted Overflows

Replacing a basin waste starts with two checks: whether the basin has an overflow and the size of its outlet. The right combination prevents leaks, lets the overflow work correctly and gives a neat connection to the trap. APM supplies basin wastes and bottle traps online and from our Acton trade counter.

Slotted or unslotted: match the basin overflow

Look inside the bowl near the upper rim. If the basin has an overflow opening and an internal overflow channel leading towards the waste hole, fit a slotted basin waste. The slots in the waste body allow overflow water to enter the drain below the plug.

If the basin has no overflow, use an unslotted waste. A slotted waste in a basin that has no sealed overflow route can allow water to escape beneath the basin. Conversely, an unslotted waste prevents an integral overflow from discharging correctly. Never assume from the basin style alone: inspect the basin and follow its manufacturer’s instructions.

Why the slotted gold waste is the right choice for an overflow basin

The Embrass Peerless slotted 1 1/4-inch waste is intended for a washbasin with an overflow.

The Embrass Peerless slotted 1 1/4-inch basin waste combines a traditional removable brass plug with a gold finish. It is a practical choice where the basin has an integral overflow and the visible waste needs to coordinate with gold or brass-coloured taps. Check the product dimensions, basin hole and finish against the sanitaryware and tap specification before purchase.

Waste operation: plug, click-clack or pop-up

  • Plug waste: a removable plug closes the outlet. It is simple to operate and easy to remove for cleaning.
  • Click-clack waste: pressing the sprung cap alternately closes and opens it. Choose the slotted or unslotted version to suit the basin.
  • Pop-up waste: a rod or lever operates the plug through a linkage. Check that the tap, basin and replacement linkage are compatible.

The operating style does not determine overflow compatibility: each waste must still be correctly specified as slotted or unslotted.

Choose the trap size separately

Many UK washbasins use a nominal 1 1/4-inch (32 mm) waste connection. The Embrass Peerless 1 1/4-inch chrome-plated brass bottle trap is the relevant product where a visible chrome bottle trap is wanted and the connection, outlet route and installation space suit it.

Do not choose a trap simply because it is described as a bottle trap. The McAlpine C10A 1 1/2-inch bottle trap is a larger 40 mm model with a 75 mm water seal and adjustable inlet. It is relevant only where the appliance and pipework require a 1 1/2-inch connection; it is not a direct replacement for a standard 1 1/4-inch basin trap without a correctly specified adaptor or different waste arrangement.

Installation checks that prevent leaks

  1. Isolate the area, place a container beneath the basin and remove the old waste and trap.
  2. Clean old sealant and limescale from both faces of the waste hole. Inspect the ceramic or other basin material for damage.
  3. Dry-assemble the new waste. Align its slots with the basin’s overflow channel and use only the washers and sealant specified by the waste and basin manufacturers. Some materials can be stained or damaged by unsuitable putty or sealant.
  4. Tighten the backnut evenly while keeping the waste centred. Do not overtighten: excess force can distort washers, damage threads or crack a ceramic basin.
  5. Fit the correctly sized trap without cross-threading. Ensure compression washers face the right direction and support pipework so it does not pull on the waste.
  6. Test with the plug open, then closed. Fill to the overflow and confirm that both the overflow route and every joint remain watertight. Recheck after draining.

If the basin is cracked, the overflow path is unclear, pipe sizes do not match or access prevents a sound joint, stop and use a competent plumber. An overflow reduces risk but does not guarantee protection against flooding; never leave a filling basin unattended.
