What Are Press-Fit Fittings?
Press-fit fittings connect copper, stainless steel, or multi-layer composite pipe without soldering, brazing, or open flame. A crimping tool — either battery-powered or manual — compresses a pre-loaded O-ring inside the fitting body onto the pipe, creating a watertight, gas-tight seal in under ten seconds.
They are now mainstream on commercial and residential installations in the UK, particularly where working conditions make torch work impractical or prohibited: occupied buildings, areas with fire suppression systems, above ceilings, or any roof void where a Hot Work Permit is required or difficult to obtain.
The Main Systems in the UK Market
Geberit Mapress
Geberit Mapress is arguably the most widely specified press-fit system in UK commercial work. It covers carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper pipe from 12mm to 108mm (and beyond in the carbon steel range). The copper system (Mapress Copper) is rated for:
- Domestic hot and cold water
- Heating and cooling circuits
- Compressed air (dry systems)
- Gas (specific fittings required — check product data sheets)
The Geberit system uses an M-profile press jaw and a green O-ring for water applications. Unused (unpressed) fittings have a distinctive "fish-mouth" profile — the O-ring holder protrudes and will leak during a pressure test if left unpressed. This is a useful quality-assurance feature: a leak on test tells you immediately where an unpressed fitting is hiding.
Conex Banninger M-Press
Conex Banninger (now part of the IBP Group) produce the M-Press range, which is one of the most commonly stocked press-fit systems in UK plumbing merchants. M-Press Copper covers 15mm to 54mm and is approved for:
- Hot and cold water (BS 6700, BS EN 806)
- Central heating
- Gas — M-Press Gas (yellow O-ring, distinctive yellow sleeve on fitting body)
- Chilled water and LTHW
M-Press uses the same M-profile jaw geometry as Geberit Mapress, meaning many press tools are cross-compatible. Always verify tool compatibility with the fitting manufacturer before using a third-party press head — the jaw geometry and pressing force must match the fitting specification.
Viega Propress
Viega (German manufacturer) supply the Propress system, which covers copper from 15mm to 108mm. The Propress Smart Connect feature means the O-ring cartridge will allow water to leak if the fitting is left unpressed — providing the same built-in quality check as Geberit's fish-mouth profile.
Viega also supply the Megapress system for carbon steel threaded pipe conversion, and the Smartpress system for stainless.
Other Systems
Other notable press systems available in the UK include:
- Yorkshire Press-Fit (Aalberts) — the same brand that makes the well-known end-feed fittings
- Mueller Streamline — common in commercial HVAC
- Pegler Yorkshire Ypress
Each system uses a proprietary O-ring and jaw profile. Do not mix fittings from different manufacturers unless both manufacturers explicitly approve cross-compatibility in writing.
Press Tools: What You Need
All press-fit systems require a calibrated press tool. The main options on site are:
- Battery press tool — most common; lightweight, cordless, compatible with a range of jaw sets. Brands include Ridgid, Milwaukee, Rems, Virax, and Rothenberger. Typically generates 32 kN of pressing force.
- Manual press tool — ratchet-operated; slower but no battery required. Useful for tight access or when battery tools are unavailable.
- Press heads / jaws — dedicated to pipe diameter. A 15mm jaw will not work on 22mm, and using the wrong size will under-press the O-ring and cause leakage.
Most press tool manufacturers supply jaw sets that cover multiple fitting brands, but always check the fitting manufacturer's approved tool list. Geberit, Conex, and Viega all publish approved press tool lists on their technical data sheets.
O-Ring Identification: Colour Coding
The O-ring material and colour tells you what the fitting is approved for:

Gas installations: Never use a water-rated black O-ring fitting on a gas system. Gas-rated press fittings carry a yellow O-ring and are clearly marked for gas use. They must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer and comply with BS 6891 (natural gas) or BS EN 1775.
Installation: Step by Step
- Cut pipe square — use a pipe cutter, not a hacksaw, to ensure a clean, burr-free end. A rough cut can displace or damage the O-ring during pressing.
- Deburr the pipe end — remove any internal or external burr with a deburring tool.
- Mark the insertion depth — every fitting has a specified insertion depth (printed on most fitting bodies or available in the manufacturer's technical data). Mark the pipe with a depth gauge or marker pen.
- Push the fitting onto the pipe — the pipe must reach the insertion depth mark. If it does not, the fitting will not press correctly and will leak.
- Position the press jaw — centre the jaw over the O-ring zone on the fitting body. The jaw must engage fully before pressing.
- Press — squeeze the trigger. A typical press cycle on a 15mm or 22mm fitting takes under 5 seconds. You will hear and feel the fitting compress.
- Inspect — check that the fitting is fully pressed (no remaining fish-mouth profile on Geberit/Viega; the fitting body should be uniformly rounded at the pressed zone).
- Pressure test — test the completed pipework to the required standard. Any unpressed fitting will leak immediately, making them easy to identify and correct before commissioning.
Permitted Applications and Limitations
Press-fit fittings are suitable for most plumbing and heating applications, but there are important exclusions:
- High-temperature steam — most press-fit copper systems are rated to 110°C maximum; steam above this temperature requires different fittings.
- Chemical applications — the O-ring material must be compatible with the fluid. Check the chemical resistance data sheet.
- Concealed pipework on gas — Gas Safe requirements and Building Regulations restrict the use of concealed fittings on gas pipework. Always check the current Gas Safe Technical Bulletin before concealing any press-fit gas connection.
- Pipe condition — press-fit fittings require clean, undamaged pipe. Corroded or oval pipe will not seat the O-ring correctly. On refurbishment projects, check existing pipe condition carefully before specifying press-fit.
Press-Fit vs End-Feed vs Push-Fit: When to Use Which

On occupied commercial buildings or anywhere a Hot Work Permit is required, press-fit eliminates the permit process entirely. This is often the deciding factor on large refurbishment contracts.
Pressure Testing Press-Fit Systems
Press-fit manufacturers specify minimum and maximum test pressures. Geberit Mapress Copper, for example, is tested to 1.5x working pressure. The test medium is typically water (hydraulic test) rather than air or nitrogen, which reduces the risk of explosive decompression if a fitting fails.
The unpressed-fitting leak characteristic makes press-fit particularly easy to test: if you pressurise the system and it holds, every fitting is pressed. If there is a leak, that fitting is unpressed — there is no ambiguity.
