End Feed vs Solder Ring vs Push-Fit Copper Fittings: A Plumber's Guide
End Feed vs Solder Ring vs Push-Fit Copper Fittings: A Plumber's Guide
Three types of copper fitting, three different ways to make a joint — and the wrong choice on the wrong job can cost you time, rework, or a callback. Whether you're replumbing a bathroom, extending a central heating circuit, or roughing in a new build, knowing when to reach for end feed, solder ring, or push-fit is basic trade knowledge worth nailing down properly.
End feed straight coupler — requires flux and solder wire. The cheapest fitting type and the standard choice for high-volume copper work.
End Feed Copper Fittings: The Trade Default
End feed fittings are the plain copper socket fittings that rely on you supplying the solder. You clean the pipe, apply flux, push the fitting on, and feed solder wire into the joint gap with a heat source. The capillary action draws the solder in and you get a clean, permanent joint.
Why plumbers choose end feed:
- Cheapest per fitting — especially for bulk buying
- Full control over the amount of solder used
- Works with all standard pipe sizes from 10mm to 54mm+
- Light and compact — hundreds fit in a toolbag
When end feed is the right call: Any time you're doing volume copper work and you're confident with soldering technique. New installs, first fixes, central heating pipework, commercial plumbing. The Embrass Peerless 15mm x 10mm End Feed Reducer and the Embrass Peerless End Feed Male Coupler 15mm x ½" are consistently our two best-selling fittings — they're on every plumber's van.
Watch out for: End feed is unforgiving if the pipe isn't clean and dry. Any moisture in the pipe, insufficient flux, or too much heat and you'll get a dry joint. Take the time to prepare properly.
Solder Ring Fittings: Built-In Solder, Faster Assembly
Solder ring fittings (also called Yorkshire fittings) have a pre-loaded ring of solder inside the fitting socket. You clean and flux the pipe as normal, push it in, apply heat — and when a ring of bright solder appears around the pipe end, the joint is made. No need to feed wire.
Solder ring elbow — the pre-loaded solder ring means faster jointing, especially in awkward positions.
Why plumbers choose solder ring:
- Faster in the field — no need to manage a coil of solder wire
- Easier to use in awkward positions (overhead, tight corners) where feeding wire is fiddly
- Visual confirmation when the joint is complete
- Consistent solder quantity — less risk of insufficient solder on a difficult joint
When solder ring is the right call: Second fix copper where you're working in tight or overhead positions. Service and repair work where speed matters. Anywhere you want a clean, consistent finish without managing a solder reel. The Embrass Peerless Solder Ring Coupler 22mm and the Embrass Peerless Solder Ring Elbow 22mm are solid stock items for 22mm CH pipework.
Watch out for: Solder ring fittings cost more per fitting than end feed equivalents. On a large job with hundreds of joints, that adds up. Many plumbers use end feed for the bulk of the work and keep solder ring for awkward joints where the extra cost is worth the time saved.
Push-Fit Fittings: No Heat, No Solder, No Flux
Push-fit fittings — JG Speedfit and Hep2O being the two dominant brands — make a joint by pushing deburred pipe into the fitting until it clicks. An internal grab ring and O-ring seal hold and seal the connection. No torch required.
Why plumbers choose push-fit:
- No flame — the only safe option when working near timber joists, insulation, or other combustibles
- Fastest assembly — joints in seconds
- Demountable — can be disconnected and remade (critical for service valves and temporary connections)
- Works with copper and plastic pipe (check the fitting spec)
When push-fit is the right call:
- Any location where open flame creates a fire risk — dry timber structures, near insulation, lofts
- Service valves and isolation points that may need future access
- Quick repairs and temporary connections
- Plastic (PEX/barrier pipe) systems where soldering isn't possible
The JG Speedfit 15mm Equal Elbow and JG Speedfit 15mm Tee are our most-requested Speedfit fittings — standard issue for underfloor heating manifolds and first-fix in timber-frame builds.
Watch out for: Push-fit fittings are not suitable for high-temperature applications (check the rated temperature — most are rated to 95°C for heating circuits, which is fine for most systems, but check with the manufacturer for condensing boiler primary circuits). They're also bulkier than capillary fittings and can look unfinished in exposed pipework. And always use the insert/liner in copper pipe — copper can oval slightly and the liner maintains the bore for the O-ring seal.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | End Feed | Solder Ring | Push-Fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per fitting | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
| Speed on site | Medium | Medium-fast | Fastest |
| Needs flame | Yes | Yes | No |
| Demountable | No | No | Yes |
| Best for | Volume new-install | Awkward positions | Fire risk / plastic pipe |
