Fire-Rated LED Downlights — IP65 Fittings, Integrated LEDs and GU10 Holders for UK Electricians

Fire-rated downlights are a critical specification for UK electricians working in ceilings above occupied rooms, lofts or voids. Without a fire rating, recessed luminaires create penetrations in the ceiling structure that can allow fire to spread rapidly between floors — compromising the 30 or 60-minute fire resistance that building regulations require. Whether you're fitting GU10 holders in new builds, replacing halogen downlights in rented flats or installing integrated LEDs in a domestic refurbishment, the right fire-rated product is essential for compliance and professional accountability.

At APM Electricals, we stock a range of fire-rated downlights from Integral LED and Aurora Enlite — covering budget GU10 holders, compact mini fittings, integrated low-profile options and premium dimmable luminaires. Here's a guide to the main types and what suits each job.

Why Fire Rating Matters for Recessed Downlights

A standard recessed downlight cuts through the ceiling plasterboard and creates a gap in the building's fire compartmentation. Building Regulations Approved Document B requires ceilings to provide at least 30 minutes of fire resistance in most domestic installations (60 minutes in some commercial or multi-storey situations). An unrated fitting removes that protection entirely — which is why Building Control and LABC inspectors routinely flag non-fire-rated downlights as non-compliant.

Fire-rated downlights address this in two ways. The most common approach uses an intumescent pad or ring around the fitting that expands in heat and seals the ceiling penetration within minutes of a fire starting. Some self-contained (integrated) LED downlights also use a heat-shield design to achieve the same effect. Either way, the result is a fitting that maintains the ceiling's fire resistance integrity for the required period.

As a practical matter, most electricians now specify fire-rated as standard on all recessed lighting — the cost difference is minimal and it removes any liability question if a fire investigation later examines the installation.

GU10 Holder vs Integrated LED: Which Type to Specify?

The choice between a GU10 holder (also called a GU10 downlight ring or fire hood) and an integrated LED downlight comes down to flexibility vs longevity.

GU10 holders like the Integral Evofire range are the most popular choice on the trade. They accept any GU10 lamp, so you can upgrade the lamp at any time — moving to higher-lumen, different colour temperature or dimmable without replacing the fitting. The Evofire's IP65 rating also makes it suitable in bathrooms (Zone 2 ceiling) and damp locations. At £5.99 a unit (or less on the 4-pack), they're highly competitive against Screwfix and CEF pricing for volume installs.

Integrated LED downlights like the Integral Low-Profile range contain the LED driver and chip within the fitting. They typically offer a longer life (often rated to 25,000 hours or more), very slim ceiling depth, and can achieve higher efficacy than a GU10 lamp-plus-holder combination. The downside is replacement when the LED eventually fails — though at this efficacy level, that's rarely a concern within a typical building's refurbishment cycle. The 6W 520lm version hits roughly 87 lm/W, well above Part L energy efficiency requirements.

For most domestic installs, the GU10 holder is the practical default. For commercial or hospitality work where long lamp life and low maintenance are priorities, an integrated downlight earns its higher price.

IP65 Rating and Bathroom Zone Rules

IP65 means the fitting is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction — more than enough for bathroom ceiling applications. Under BS 7671 (18th Edition), ceiling-mounted luminaires in Zone 1 of a bathroom (directly over the bath or shower) must be at least IP44. IP65 exceeds this, covering both Zone 1 and Zone 2 (within 0.6m of the zone boundary) with margin to spare.

Note that the IP rating applies to the fitting body, not to the GU10 lamp itself. Most standard GU10 lamps are not individually IP-rated, but because the Evofire holder seals around the lamp and the rear of the fitting is closed, the system achieves IP65 as a complete assembly. Always install the IP65-rated lamp specified in the fitting's documentation to maintain that rating in use.

For loft conversions where insulation will be laid over the ceiling, check whether the fitting is rated for insulation contact (IC-rated). Many fire-rated downlights require a 100mm air gap around the body — or you need an insulation guard over the fitting. The Integral Evofire range includes a specific Evofire with insulation guard variant (handle: evofire-fire-rated-downlight-insu-guard) for direct insulation burial, worth specifying whenever loft insulation depth is an issue.

Integral Evofire: Value Leader for Trade Volume

The Evofire range is the most-specified fire-rated GU10 holder in the UK trade market. The round 70mm white variant ships with the intumescent ring, spring clips and a GU10 lampholder already assembled — it's a one-piece install. Cutout is 70mm, standard for all GU10-lamp-based downlights, matching the vast majority of existing ceiling holes in refurb work.

The 4-pack at £19.99 (effectively £5/unit) makes it one of the most cost-effective fire-rated options available. Compared to buying individual holders, specifying packs on larger installs reduces cost and packaging waste. Also available in satin, polished chrome and square variants for aesthetic flexibility — particularly useful in premium kitchen and bathroom refurbs where the finish matters to the homeowner.

Aurora Enlite EN-DE8/30: Premium Dimmable Specification

The Aurora Enlite EN-DE8/30 is an 8W integrated LED downlight with IP65 protection, fire rating and flicker-free dimming capability. At 3000K warm white, it suits living rooms, bedrooms and hospitality environments where a natural, relaxing light tone is preferred. Aurora's Enlite range is well regarded for dimmer compatibility — the EN-DE8 specifies tested dimmer lists on the data sheet, reducing the risk of buzz or flicker complaints that can arise when budget LED drivers meet legacy trailing-edge dimmers.

At £13.99 it's competitive for a complete integrated downlight (no lamp purchase required), and the 8W output delivers a noticeably brighter result than many 6W alternatives — useful in rooms where ceiling height or fixture count limits total installed wattage. A solid upmarket choice when the client wants premium performance or the install is a hotel, restaurant or high-spec residential project.

Cutout Sizing and Installation Notes

Standard UK GU10 downlights use a 70mm cutout. Most Integral Evofire models are compatible with cutouts from 68–75mm, covering the variation found in older installations. Check the specific fitting spec sheet when replacing existing downlights in properties where the hole size may have drifted from new.

Ceiling void depth matters too. Standard Evofire units need approximately 65mm above the ceiling board. Low-profile integrated models (like the Integral Low-Profile series) reduce this to under 30mm — essential in concrete soffits with a thin plasterboard lining, or where services fill the void.

For wiring, all downlights shown here accept flex connection to the driver/lampholder via a standard terminal connector. The GU10 holder variants include the holder internally — just terminate the supply cable and push-fit the GU10 lamp. Integrated LED versions connect at the driver block, usually with a terminal strip rated for 2.5mm² flex.
