GU10 LED Bulbs — Colour Temperature, Dimmability and Wattage Guide for UK Electricians

GU10 LED bulbs are the standard replacement lamp for recessed downlights and track spotlights across UK homes and commercial premises. With dozens of options on the market — varying by colour temperature, wattage, and dimmability — knowing which GU10 to specify or stock is a practical skill for any electrician or installer.

What Is a GU10 Fitting?

GU10 refers to the lamp base: two short, stubby pins (G) with a 10mm separation (U10), designed to push and twist into a matching holder. The format replaced MR16 12V halogen in most UK domestic installations because GU10 runs directly from the 230V mains, eliminating the need for a separate transformer.

Typical applications include ceiling downlights (recessed or surface-mounted), bathroom mirror lights, kitchen under-cabinet spotlights, and adjustable track systems.

LED vs Halogen GU10

A standard 50W halogen GU10 draws 50 watts and produces around 600–700 lumens of light. A modern LED equivalent produces the same output from just 5–6 watts — an 88–90% reduction in energy consumption. Over a single year, replacing 10 halogen GU10s with LED saves roughly 440 kWh, cutting electricity costs by £130–£150 at current UK rates.

LED GU10s also last 15,000–25,000 hours versus 2,000 hours for halogen, significantly reducing lamp replacement call-backs on commercial or rental property installations.

Choosing Colour Temperature

Colour temperature (measured in Kelvin) is the single most important selection criterion for GU10 bulbs. Getting it wrong affects how a space feels and functions.

2700K — Warm White

2700K produces a soft, yellowish-white light close to traditional incandescent or halogen. Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and hospitality spaces where warmth and relaxation are the goal. The most popular choice for domestic sitting rooms.

4000K — Cool White (Natural White)

4000K is a crisp, neutral white — not yellow, not blue. Best for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, retail displays, and anywhere tasks are performed under the light. The industry standard for commercial and retail fitouts.

6500K — Daylight

6500K produces a bright, blue-white light that mimics overcast daylight. Used in garages, workshops, utility rooms, and medical or inspection environments where clarity and detail matter. Also used in grow-light applications.

Dimmable vs Non-Dimmable GU10s

Not all LED GU10s are dimmable — the driver electronics differ. If the circuit has a dimmer switch, a dimmable LED must be fitted, otherwise flickering, buzzing, or premature failure will occur. The dimmer switch itself also matters: trailing-edge (LED-compatible) dimmers work best with LED loads. Leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen may cause issues even with dimmable LEDs.

For new installations, specify dimmable LEDs throughout — they cost marginally more but eliminate future call-backs if the customer later adds dimmer switches.

Wattage and Lumen Output

Modern GU10 LED bulbs range from 3.4W (approx. 280lm, replacing 30W halogen) to 7W (approx. 700lm, replacing 60W halogen). For standard 50W halogen replacement, specify a 5–6W GU10 with 500–650 lumens. Beam angle is also relevant: 36–38 degrees is standard for downlights; 24 degrees gives a more focused spotlight effect.

Fire-rated downlights: When fitting GU10s into recessed ceiling downlights in a floor-to-ceiling installation (i.e., where a floor above is involved), use a fire-rated fitting with an intumescent liner. IP ratings: For bathroom zones 1 and 2, the GU10 fitting must be IP65-rated; the lamp itself is not the IP-rated component. Standard GU10 lamps are suitable in sealed IP65 fittings.

Dimmer compatibility: When replacing halogen on an existing dimmer circuit, reduce the total load and check the dimmer's minimum load rating. Many older dimmers require a minimum of 40W; with 5W LEDs, the circuit load may fall below this threshold, causing flicker. Replace the dimmer with a leading-edge or universal LED dimmer if this occurs.

Which GU10 Should You Stock?

For a trade stock or van kit, the practical minimum is:

• 2700K dimmable — for domestic living areas
• 4000K dimmable — for kitchens, bathrooms, commercial
• 4000K non-dimmable — budget option for non-dimmed circuits
