What Is a Hose Clip?

A hose clip (also called a jubilee clip or worm-drive clamp) is a band of stainless or zinc-plated steel formed into a ring with a slotted screw mechanism. Tightening the screw draws the band tight around a hose or tube, compressing it firmly onto the underlying pipe or fitting to create a leak-proof seal. They're used across plumbing, heating, automotive, and industrial applications — but in the building trades, they're most commonly seen on flexible hoses for appliances, heating systems, and drainage connections.

Hose clips are sized by their clamping range — the minimum and maximum outer diameter of the hose (in millimetres) that the clip can grip effectively. Choosing the right size is critical: too large and the clip won't clamp evenly; too small and you can't fit it over the hose at all.

Common Sizes and Where They're Used

• 9–12mm / 13–20mm: Small diameter applications — bleed nipples, thin vinyl tube, aquarium or lab tubing
• 16–22mm / 16–25mm: The most common sizes for plumbers — washing machine and dishwasher hoses, flexi fill connectors, central heating bleed hoses, garden hose fittings
• 25–35mm: Larger flexible hoses — waste hose connections, condensate drain pipes, overflow hose connections on cylinders and tanks
• 40–70mm and above: Heavy-duty and commercial work — large bore flexible pipe, drainage connections, water butts, pumps

Material: Zinc vs Stainless Steel

Standard hose clips have a zinc-plated mild steel band — perfectly adequate for most indoor plumbing where there's no salt exposure or harsh moisture. Stainless steel clips are worth the small extra cost for external use, marine environments, or anywhere with persistent moisture exposure. Faithfull's stainless range (including the 60–80mm clip we stock) is commonly specified for external overflow pipes and external condensate drain connections on boilers.

Fitting Tips

Always position the clip at least 6–10mm in from the end of the hose. Tighten the screw with a flat-blade screwdriver or 7mm socket/nut spinner — do not overtighten, as this can cut through the hose. On washing machine and dishwasher hose connections, give it a final check once the appliance has been running for a few minutes, as hoses expand slightly when pressurised. For flat-band jubilee clips, ensure the screw housing sits in the centre of the band run, not at the join, to achieve even clamping.
