IP65 Fire Rated GU10 Downlights — Bathroom-Safe and Part B Compliant Guide for UK Electricians

Fire rated GU10 downlights are one of the most commonly specified fittings in UK domestic electrical installations. They are required wherever downlights penetrate a fire-rated ceiling — which in practice means any ceiling that forms a floor/ceiling assembly between habitable storeys — and the IP65 rating makes them suitable for bathroom zones where water resistance is a compliance requirement under BS 7671 (18th Edition).

APM Electricals stocks fire rated GU10 downlights from Integral LED (the Evofire and Evofire Mini ranges) and Aurora (Enlite EN-DE8/30), covering 43mm and 70mm cutout sizes, standard and insulation-guard variants, and dimmable models. This guide covers compliance requirements, product selection, and installation considerations for UK trade electricians.

Fire Rating — What Part B Requires

Part B of the Building Regulations (Fire Safety) requires that fire spread between compartments is resisted. A standard recessed downlight creates a hole in the ceiling, which compromises the fire resistance of the ceiling assembly. A fire rated downlight fitting uses an intumescent pad or spring-loaded cover that expands under heat, sealing the aperture and restoring the 30- or 60-minute fire resistance of the ceiling.

In practice, fire rated downlights are required in any of the following situations:

  • Downlights installed in a ceiling that is the floor of a room above (e.g. ground floor ceiling beneath a first floor bedroom)
  • Downlights in a ceiling beneath a loft that is used as habitable space
  • Downlights in a ceiling between floors in a multi-storey dwelling
  • Any ceiling where the building's fire engineering requires a rated assembly

The standard domestic fire resistance requirement is REI 30 (30 minutes). Most fire rated downlights from Integral LED and Aurora are tested and certified to 60 minutes. Always verify the fire performance certificate for the specific fitting when specifying for a building control submission.

IP65 — Bathroom Zone Requirements

BS 7671 (18th Edition) divides bathrooms into zones based on proximity to water sources:

  • Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower tray — IPX7 minimum (submersion). Luminaires in Zone 0 are very rare.
  • Zone 1: Above the bath or shower tray, up to 2.25m above the floor level — IPX4 minimum (splash-proof from all directions). IP65 exceeds this requirement.
  • Zone 2: 0.6m horizontally beyond the bath or shower tray — IPX4 minimum. IP65 equally suitable.
  • Outside zones: Standard IP20 fittings are permissible, but IP44 or IP65 is commonly specified throughout bathrooms for robustness.

An IP65 rating (dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction) is the standard specification for bathroom downlights in UK residential work. It comfortably exceeds the minimum for Zone 1 and Zone 2 and removes the need to calculate zone boundaries precisely — a practical advantage on site.

Cutout Sizes — 43mm, 70mm and 70–100mm

GU10 fire rated downlights come in two common cutout sizes for UK domestic use:

70mm Cutout (Standard)

The standard domestic downlight cutout. Compatible with 70mm core drills and the majority of plasterboard ceiling installations. The Integral LED Evofire 85 and ILDLFR70E003 use a 70mm cutout and will drop into existing apertures left by most previous-generation GU10 downlights.

43mm Cutout (Mini / Micro Bezel)

The Integral LED EvoFire Mini 55 uses a 43mm cutout, making it suitable for tight ceiling voids where joist depth or cable routing makes a full-size 70mm downlight impractical. The smaller bezel also suits modern bathrooms where a more discreet fitting is preferred. Requires a 43mm core drill rather than the standard 70mm.

70–100mm Cutout (Maxi / Adjustable)

The Evofire Maxi 110 uses an adjustable cutout from 70–100mm, making it suitable for retro-fitting into existing apertures that may have been enlarged over time or were cut for older, larger fittings.

Insulation Compatibility

Standard recessed downlights must not be covered with insulation — heat build-up can cause premature lamp failure or, in the worst case, a fire risk. In loft and ceiling void installations, this means either leaving an insulation-free zone around each fitting or using a downlight with an integral insulation guard.

The Integral LED Evofire with Insulation Guard (70–100mm cutout variant) includes a factory-fitted polystyrene insulation cap that allows insulation to be placed directly over the fitting. This eliminates the need to manually create insulation-free zones and is the recommended specification for any downlight installation where ceiling insulation is present — which in a post-2010 build is essentially universal.

GU10 Lamp Compatibility and LED Efficiency

All downlights in this guide use the standard GU10 bayonet-style lamp holder, compatible with any GU10 LED lamp. For IP65 bathroom installations, use a lamp with an IP65-rated glass cover or specify an IP-rated GU10 lamp explicitly. Integral LED's own GU10 range (including the GU10 640Lm 6W 6500K Dimmable, available separately at APM) are designed to pair with Evofire fittings.

A standard GU10 LED lamp draws 5–8W and delivers 400–700Lm. A six-downlight bathroom installation draws 30–48W total — a significant reduction versus the 35W halogen GU10 lamps they replace (210W for six fittings). LED lamps also run cooler, reducing heat emission into the ceiling void.

For dimmable installations, confirm that both the downlight and the GU10 lamp are rated as dimmable, and that the dimmer switch is listed on the lamp manufacturer's compatibility list. The Aurora Enlite EN-DE8/30 includes an 8W dimmable LED lamp as an integrated unit.

Installation Notes for Electricians

Core Drilling

Use a 70mm or 43mm diamond core drill (depending on fitting) to cut the aperture in plasterboard. A pilot drill through the ceiling first allows you to check for obstructions — cables, joists, noggins — before committing to the full cutout. Mark all aperture centres before cutting and check the spacing is consistent, particularly in a bathroom where the fitting arrangement is visible at close range.

Cable Entry

Fire rated downlights have factory-fitted cable knockouts or grommets. Pull the supply cable through the knockouts before pushing the fitting into the aperture. Do not compromise the IP65 seal — all cable entry points must be sealed after installation if the downlight's fire resistance is to remain valid.

Locking

Most GU10 fire rated downlights use spring-loaded clips that grip the plasterboard from above. Once the GU10 lamp is inserted and the fitting pushed into the aperture, the springs lock it flush. No screws or external fixings are required. In thicker or irregular ceiling materials (e.g. two-layer plasterboard) verify that the clip depth is sufficient.

Testing

After installation, test each fitting with the circuit live before sealing any accessible ceiling void — particularly important when replacing multiple fittings, where individual lamp or holder faults can be harder to trace. Verify that any dimmer switch is operating correctly across the full range before handing over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need fire rated downlights throughout the whole house?

Only in ceilings that form a fire-rated compartment boundary. In a single-storey extension with a flat roof, fire rated downlights are not required in the ceiling (there is no habitable space above). In a standard two-storey house, the ground-floor ceiling — which is the floor of the bedroom above — requires fire rated fittings wherever downlights are installed. Always check with the relevant building control authority if you are uncertain about the compartmentation requirement for a specific installation.

Do I need IP65 throughout the bathroom or only near the shower?

IP65 is required in Zone 1 (above the bath or shower) and Zone 2 (0.6m beyond the bath/shower). Outside these zones, IP20 fittings are technically compliant. In practice, most electricians specify IP65 throughout the bathroom ceiling to avoid zone calculations, provide a consistent finish, and ensure the installation remains compliant if the bathroom layout is later altered.

Can I use a standard GU10 bulb in a fire rated IP65 downlight?

Many fire rated IP65 downlights have a sealed glass lens that maintains the IP rating regardless of the lamp fitted. Others require an IP-rated lamp to maintain the IP65 rating of the complete assembly. Check the manufacturer's installation instructions. Integral LED GU10 lamps available at APM Electricals are compatible with the Evofire range.

Are these fittings suitable for use with smart dimmers?

Smart dimmer switches from Lutron, Varilight, Legrand and others are generally compatible with dimmable GU10 LED lamps and integrated LED downlights such as the Aurora Enlite EN-DE8/30. Check the dimmer manufacturer's compatibility list for the specific lamp or downlight being used. Minimum load requirements and dimmer gang limits apply — particularly relevant in a bathroom with six or more downlights on a single dimmer circuit.
