LED Battens, Panels, and Floodlights: Which Fitting Do You Need?

Walk into any wholesaler and you'll see sparks grabbing battens, facilities managers ordering panels, and builders speccing floodlights — often without being quite sure which fitting is right for which job. Here's the trade breakdown: LED batten lights, LED panel lights, and LED floodlights each solve different problems. Get the spec wrong and you'll be back.

LED Batten Lights: For Garages, Workshops, and Utility Spaces

A batten replaces the old fluorescent strip light. Same form factor — long and linear — but no tube to replace, no starter to fail, and energy consumption cut by 50–70%. They surface-mount directly to ceilings or walls, run at mains voltage, and need nothing more than a standard fused spur or lighting circuit.

What to look for:

• Length and wattage: 2ft (600mm, ~18–20W), 4ft (1200mm, ~30–36W), 5ft (1500mm, ~40–50W). Match the wattage to the room — a single 5ft batten lights a standard domestic garage adequately; a workshop needs two or three.
• CCT-adjustable vs fixed: Fixed colour temperature (4000K cool white, 6000K daylight) is cheaper. CCT-adjustable models let you dial between 3000K, 4000K, and 6000K on-site — useful when the end use isn't confirmed at first fix.
• Linkable battens: Commercial-grade battens link end-to-end, so you run one cable and daisy-chain the rest. Saves material and labour on long rows across a warehouse or parking structure.
• IP rating: IP20 for dry interiors. If there's any moisture risk — garages with car washing, utility rooms, plant rooms — specify IP65 minimum.

Panel lights are designed for suspended grid ceiling systems — the standard 600×600mm bay. They drop in, wire to the grid feed, and give you even flat light across the ceiling plane. There's no glare strip, no tube shadow — just a clean, bright ceiling.

Key specs:

• 600×600mm recessed: Fits standard 24mm T-bar suspended ceilings. The standard commercial spec.
• Round panels: Surface-mount or recessed circular panels (150–300mm diameter) suit modern offices, reception areas, and hospitality. Cleaner finish than a square grid panel on a plasterboard ceiling.
• Wattage and lumens: An 18W panel delivers around 1500lm — suited to smaller rooms, meeting pods, storage. A 40W 600×600mm panel delivers 3400–4000lm — the standard for an open-plan office lit to 400 lux. Always check the maintained illuminance against the room area in your lighting design.
• Colour temperature: 4000K (cool white) is the default for offices and kitchens. 3000K (warm white) suits reception, retail, and hospitality. 6500K (daylight) for workshop inspection areas or technical drawing spaces.
• Driver type: Most panels come with a fixed constant-current driver. If you need dimming, specify DALI or 0–10V dimmable versions and pair with the correct controls.

LED Floodlights: For External and Industrial Applications

Floodlights are the heavy end of the range — high lumen output in a weatherproof housing designed for outdoor or industrial environments. Car parks, yard lighting, loading bays, building façades, and security perimeters.

Specifying the right floodlight:

• Wattage: 10–20W for a domestic entrance or small yard. 30W for a larger domestic driveway or small commercial area. 50W for loading bays and open yards. 100W+ for large car parks and industrial perimeters.
• Samsung chip vs standard SMD: Samsung LEDs run cooler, maintain lumen output across a longer service life, and typically have better colour rendering (CRI 80+). For commercial applications where you don't want to be replacing fittings every 3 years, the Samsung chip variant is worth the marginal price difference.
• PIR sensor: Built-in PIR saves energy on intermittent-use areas — driveways, stairwells, bin stores. Avoids a separate PIR housing and saves the install time. If you're using a separate PIR switch, specify a standard non-sensor model.
• IP and IK rating: Minimum IP65 for external use. IK08 or above for vandal-risk areas (car parks, underpasses).

All three fitting types are standard mains voltage. A run of LED battens on a 16A MCB can handle around 3.5kW — with most battens under 50W, you can run a significant number of fittings before you're near the limit. For commercial panel installations, allow for the quantity of panels and any inrush from simultaneous switching if you're using a single contactor.

For dimming, check the driver spec before you order. Standard non-dimmable drivers won't tolerate a trailing-edge dimmer and will likely fail or flicker. If you need 0–10V or DALI control, specify it upfront — retrofit dimming to non-dimmable LED fittings is not a fix.

For floodlight installations on external circuits, ensure the final circuit has RCD protection. TT earthing systems need particular attention — confirm earth electrode resistance before energising.
