What Is a Bulkhead Light?

A bulkhead light is a wall- or ceiling-mounted luminaire designed for robust, practical use in locations where a standard decorative fitting would be unsuitable. The defining feature is its sealed, impact-resistant housing — typically polycarbonate (PC) — which protects the light source and gear from dust, moisture, and physical damage.

In UK electrical practice, bulkhead lights are the standard solution for garages, outbuildings, stairwells, plant rooms, communal corridors, loading bays, and external walls. They are also frequently installed in bathroom zones 2 and 3 when the IP rating is appropriate.

Modern LED bulkhead fittings replace older tungsten and CFL versions. They consume significantly less power, have longer service lives (typically 30,000–50,000 hours), and require no lamp replacement. For M&E contractors working on residential blocks or light commercial, LED bulkheads are now the only realistic specification.

IP Ratings Explained: IP65 and Why It Matters

The Ingress Protection (IP) rating is the key specification for bulkhead lights used outdoors or in damp locations. It is expressed as two digits:

• First digit (solids): 6 = dust-tight (no ingress of dust)
• Second digit (liquids): 5 = protected against water jets from any direction

IP65 is the minimum standard for external wall lights exposed to rain and for bathroom Zone 2. IP44 is acceptable for bathroom Zone 2 in sheltered positions and for indoor damp locations such as kitchens or utility rooms.

For a garden wall light subject to direct rain, IP65 is the correct specification. For a communal stairwell light in an enclosed building, IP44 is sufficient. When in doubt, specify IP65 — it eliminates any ambiguity and future-proofs the installation.

Under BS 7671:2018 (Amendment 2, 2022), Section 701 governs bathroom zones. Zone 1 (inside the bath or shower area) requires IPX5 minimum; Zone 2 (up to 0.6m outside Zone 1 and up to 2.25m above the floor) requires IPX4 minimum. A fitting rated IP65 satisfies both zones where wall mounting is permitted.

Circular Bulkhead Lights: The Trade Standard

The circular polycarbonate bulkhead is the workhorse of the UK M&E trade. It is fast to install (back-entry wiring, fixed to a standard surface mounting box or directly to the wall), robust, vandal-resistant, and available with integrated LED that needs no lamp replacement.

White is the most common specification for domestic applications — garage walls, outbuildings, and residential external wall lights where a clean, neutral appearance is required.

The lower price versus the black variant makes this the default domestic specification choice. Both variants use the same LED module and driver, so the only difference is aesthetics and price.

Emergency Maintained Bulkhead Lights

Emergency lighting is a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) for all non-domestic premises and residential buildings with common areas (flats, HMOs). The duty holder must ensure that emergency lighting illuminates escape routes and signs for a minimum of 3 hours following mains failure.

Emergency bulkhead fittings contain an internal NiCd or lithium battery, a charging circuit, and an LED that illuminates automatically when the mains supply is interrupted. "Maintained" emergency fittings operate on mains power during normal conditions (acting as a standard light) and switch to battery power during a power cut. "Non-maintained" fittings only illuminate during a power failure.

For communal stairwells, corridors, and escape routes in residential blocks, maintained emergency bulkheads are the standard specification. They serve as the normal lighting source and provide emergency illumination — simplifying installation by eliminating the need for separate luminaires.

Meridian LED Bulkhead 3 Hours Maintained

The Meridian LED Bulkhead 3 Hours Maintained is a self-contained emergency fitting that provides 3 hours of emergency illumination — meeting the minimum statutory requirement for most escape route applications under BS EN 1838 and BS 5266-1.

The unit operates on mains during normal use and automatically switches to battery backup on mains failure. No separate emergency pack or central battery system is required.

Installation note: emergency maintained fittings require a permanent live feed (not switched) so the battery charges continuously. They should be connected directly to the consumer unit on a dedicated circuit, not to a switched live via a standard lighting circuit.

PIR Wall Lights: Outdoor Security and Energy Saving

PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor wall lights activate automatically when movement is detected within the sensor's detection zone. They are specified for external walls where continuous operation would waste energy, or where the primary purpose is security illumination rather than ambient lighting.

PIR wall lights in a well-designed installation replace timed or continuously-on external fittings. They reduce energy consumption (the light only runs when needed), extend lamp life, and provide security benefit by illuminating when someone approaches the building.

Installation consideration: PIR sensor angle and sensitivity. Most fittings have a 120–180° horizontal detection angle and detect movement up to 8–12 metres. The sensor should face the approach path, not a high-traffic area (road, adjacent property) that would cause nuisance activation.

Wiring and Installation: Bulkhead Lights

All bulkhead lights in this range are surface-mounted, back-wired fittings. The standard installation procedure:

1. Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and verify dead with a voltage tester.
2. Mark and drill the wall fixing points — typically 2 or 3 fixings depending on the fitting. Use appropriate wall plugs for masonry.
3. Feed the cable through the back entry gland. Tighten the gland around the cable sheath to maintain IP rating.
4. Connect the terminals: Line (brown) to L, Neutral (blue) to N, Earth (green/yellow) to E. For emergency maintained fittings, confirm the live feed is permanent (not switched).
5. Secure the fitting to the wall and check that the diffuser or cover seals correctly against the body to maintain IP rating.
6. Test: Restore supply and verify operation. For emergency fittings, simulate mains failure by isolating the supply and confirming the fitting illuminates on battery.

If installing on an external masonry wall, use 3-core SWA (steel wire armoured) cable where the cable runs externally, or route internally to the nearest junction. External unprotected cable runs in T&E are not suitable — use PVC conduit if surface-mounted externally.

Compliance and Certification

All fittings in this range carry CE (or UKCA) marking and are manufactured to relevant EN standards. IP65 ratings are tested to IEC 60529. Emergency fittings are tested to BS EN 60598-2-22.

For landlords: emergency lighting in HMOs and residential blocks with communal areas is inspected under the Housing Act 2004 and the RRO. Non-compliance can result in prohibition notices and criminal prosecution. Fitting a 3-hour maintained emergency bulkhead to each floor landing costs approximately £20–£30 per fitting — a modest investment against the liability risk.

For Part P notification: external lighting circuits powered from a new dedicated circuit require notification to Building Control (or a competent person scheme registration, e.g. NICEIC, NAPIT). Replacing a fitting on an existing circuit is exempt from notification.
