LED bulkhead lights are one of the most widely specified fittings in commercial and residential electrical installations. Robust, energy-efficient, and available with integral emergency and PIR variants, they suit stairwells, corridors, car parks, garages, external walls, plant rooms, and utility spaces where durability and low running costs matter more than aesthetics.

This guide covers bulkhead light types, IP and IK ratings, wiring configurations, emergency gear, PIR operation, and the installation requirements UK electricians need to meet under BS 7671.

What Is a Bulkhead Light?

A bulkhead light is a self-contained luminaire mounted directly to a wall or ceiling surface, with a robust housing — typically polycarbonate (PC), ABS, or die-cast aluminium — that encloses the lamp and gear. The housing is sealed against the ingress of dust and water, making bulkheads suitable for locations where a standard open or semi-recessed fitting would fail.

Traditional bulkheads used 2D, PL, or circular fluorescent lamps. Modern versions are almost universally LED, with the light source integrated into the fitting or replaceable as an LED module. Integrated LED bulkheads offer 30,000–50,000 hour lamp life, typically 3,000–4,000K colour temperature for utility spaces, and driver efficiencies of 85–92%.

Common Applications

  • Stairwells and escape routes — BS 5266 requires adequate maintained or non-maintained emergency lighting on escape routes; bulkheads are the standard choice
  • External walls — entrance lighting, security lighting, meter cupboard illumination
  • Car parks and garages — IP65 rating required for exposed locations, IK08–IK10 for impact resistance in vehicle environments
  • Plant rooms and service corridors — must withstand industrial environments; ATEX-rated versions for hazardous areas
  • Domestic utility rooms, loft hatches, and outbuildings — simple IP44 or IP65 surface-mounted luminaires with integral switching

IP Ratings for Bulkhead Lights

The IP (Ingress Protection) code is defined in BS EN 60529 and consists of two digits:

  • First digit (0–6) — dust protection: 5 = dust-protected, 6 = dust-tight
  • Second digit (0–9) — water protection: 4 = splash-proof, 5 = jet-proof, 6 = powerful jets, 7 = temporary immersion, 8 = continuous immersion

For bulkhead lights:

IK Impact Ratings

The IK code (BS EN 62262) measures resistance to mechanical impact in joules:

  • IK06 (1J) — basic protection, domestic interiors
  • IK07 (2J) — general commercial use
  • IK08 (5J) — car parks, school corridors, public areas
  • IK10 (20J) — high vandal-risk locations, secure environments

Always check the IK rating alongside IP. A fitting can be IP65 but have an IK06 rating — fine for a sheltered external wall, but not suitable for a multi-storey car park column where impact from vehicles or trolleys is possible.

LED Bulkhead Types

Standard (Non-Emergency) Bulkheads

Single-circuit fitting connected to the mains supply, switching on and off with the circuit. Available with:

  • Integral PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor for automatic switching
  • Photocell (daylight sensor) for dusk-to-dawn external operation
  • Microwave (DALI or standalone) sensors for corridor occupancy
  • Adjustable lumen output and colour temperature (CCT-switchable: 3000K/4000K/6500K)

Emergency Bulkheads

Emergency bulkheads incorporate a battery pack (NiMH or Li-ion) that maintains illumination for a minimum of 3 hours if the mains supply fails. Two types:

  • Non-maintained — operates only during mains failure. Normal operation: off. Emergency operation: on from battery. Used on escape routes where the fitting would normally be switched off.
  • Maintained — operates from mains in normal use AND from battery on mains failure. Required on escape routes where the fitting provides both normal and emergency illumination (e.g. open-plan offices, cinemas).

Emergency bulkheads also feature:

  • Self-test function — automatically tests battery and lamp monthly (short function test) and annually (3-hour duration test); reports faults via LED indicator
  • Addressable/DALI variants — allow central test management via an emergency lighting test system (ELTS); required in larger commercial installations under BS 5266
  • Maintained/non-maintained switch — some fittings are switchable between modes on site

Wiring a Standard LED Bulkhead

Most LED bulkheads are wired as simple switch-fused spurs or on a lighting circuit. The fitting has a terminal block or flying leads accepting the supply cable.

Standard Wiring (No PIR)

Supply (Live from switch) → L terminal
Neutral                   → N terminal
CPC (Earth)               → E/PE terminal

Cable entry is via a knockout or gland plate. Always use a suitably rated cable gland to maintain the IP rating — an unsealed entry point will degrade the IP65 rating to IP20.

Cable sizing: typically 1.0mm² or 1.5mm² T&E for a lighting spur. Where the bulkhead is on a ring or radial lighting circuit, use the circuit cable sizing — most domestic and light commercial lighting circuits use 1.0mm² or 1.5mm² 6242Y.

PIR Bulkhead Wiring

An integral PIR bulkhead switches the LED load internally — no external switch is required, although an override or isolation switch is good practice. Wire as standard (L/N/E) and the PIR handles the switching.

Where a separate wall-mounted PIR is used to switch multiple bulkheads:

Supply → Permanent Live → PIR → Switched Live → Bulkhead L terminal
Supply → Neutral → Bulkhead N terminal

PIR range, dwell time, and lux threshold are adjustable via trim pots on most units. Set lux threshold to prevent unnecessary activation in lit conditions; set dwell to minimum required (typically 30 seconds–5 minutes depending on application).

Emergency Bulkhead Wiring

Emergency bulkheads require a permanent live supply to charge the battery, plus the switched live for normal illumination (maintained type) or as an inhibit input (non-maintained type):

Permanent Live → Battery charge input (often marked CL or PL)
Switched Live  → Mains supply input (for maintained: operates fitting; for non-maintained: inhibit)
Neutral        → N terminal
Earth          → E terminal

On non-maintained fittings: when the switched live is present (mains on, switch closed), the battery charges and the lamp is off. When the switched live is lost (mains failure), the battery activates the lamp.

Always check the wiring diagram in the fitting's data sheet — the terminal labelling varies between manufacturers.

Circuit Protection and Fusing

Bulkheads on a lighting circuit are protected by the circuit breaker (typically 6A Type B for domestic lighting). Where a bulkhead is on a spur from a ring circuit:

  • Use a 3A or 5A fused spur (FCU) — do not connect unfused directly to a ring circuit
  • The FCU provides local isolation and overcurrent protection

For external and commercial bulkheads, a 6A or 10A Type B MCB on a dedicated lighting circuit is standard. Ensure the circuit is RCD-protected — required under Amendment 3 of BS 7671:2018 for all socket and lighting circuits in most premises types.

Earthing and Bonding Requirements

All Class I bulkhead luminaires (metal housing or metal gland plate) must be earthed. The CPC must be continuous and correctly sized — for a 1.5mm² cable this is a 1.5mm² CPC within the T&E.

Class II (double-insulated) fittings, marked with the double-insulation symbol (□ within □), do not require a protective earth. However, the circuit earth must still be present at the accessory as the IP rating of the gland is critical to the fitting's safety.

Supplementary bonding in bathrooms: where a Class I bulkhead is installed in a bathroom zone, it must be included in the supplementary equipotential bonding or the circuit must be RCD-protected (≤30mA). See the APM guide to earth bonding and equipotential bonding.

Part P Notification

In England and Wales, replacing a light fitting like-for-like (same position, same circuit) is generally notifiable only if in a special location (bathroom, kitchen). Installing a new circuit, adding a consumer unit circuit, or extending wiring into a bathroom requires notification under Part P. Installation Best Practice

Fixing

Bulkheads are typically fixed via a rear entry back plate or central fixing boss. Use appropriate fixings for the substrate:

  • Masonry: M5 or M6 rawlbolts or frame anchors — ensure the fixing torque doesn't crack the polycarbonate housing
  • Steel purlins / fabricated steelwork: self-tapping screws or M6 bolts with spring nuts
  • Dry-lining (plasterboard): use proprietary plasterboard fixings rated for the fitting weight, or fix through to a nogging

Maintaining IP Integrity

  • Use a correctly sized PVC or nylon cable gland at all cable entries — the gland must be IP-rated to at least the same level as the fitting
  • Blanking plugs must be fitted to all unused knockouts
  • Gaskets must be undamaged and correctly seated when re-assembling the cover; replace if cut or compressed out of shape
  • Don't over-tighten covers — polycarbonate can crack at over-torque, breaking the seal

Mounting Height

Escape route luminaires should be mounted at 2–2.5m above finished floor level for maximum illuminated coverage, in line with BS 5266 recommendations. External security bulkheads are typically at 2.4–3m for coverage and vandal deterrence.

Emergency Lighting Testing Requirements

BS 5266-1 requires:

  • Monthly test — brief function test of the emergency mode (typically 1 minute); confirm lamp illuminates from battery
  • Annual test — full 3-hour duration test; battery must sustain rated output for the full period
  • Log book — all tests, results, faults, and remediation must be recorded

Self-test bulkheads (most modern units) perform monthly and annual tests automatically and flag faults via a red/green LED on the fitting. Central monitoring systems (via DALI or addressable protocols) aggregate results across a building.

Lamp Replacement and Maintenance

Integrated LED bulkheads are not field-repairable in the traditional sense — the LED module is not a user-replaceable part on most fittings. At end-of-life (typically 30,000–50,000 hours ≈ 10–15 years at 8 hours/day), the full fitting is replaced.

Some premium bulkheads use LED modules on a standardised format (e.g. Zhaga Book 3 or Book 12) allowing module replacement. Emergency battery packs, however, are field-replaceable on most fittings — the battery cartridge clips out without tools, important for maintaining emergency compliance over the fitting's life (batteries typically last 4–5 years before capacity degrades below 80%).
