LED Floodlights and Security Lights — PIR Sensors, IP Ratings, and Wattage Guide for UK Electricians
LED floodlights are among the most common outdoor electrical installations in UK domestic and commercial work. Whether it's a garage perimeter light, driveway security fitting, or warehouse area light, electricians encounter floodlight jobs on almost every external circuits project. This guide covers wattage selection, PIR integration, IP rating requirements, and the key differences between budget, mid-range, and professional-grade LED flood fittings.
LED Floodlight Wattage — What Replaces What?
One of the most frequent questions on floodlight jobs is wattage equivalence. Traditional halogen floodlights were rated at 150W, 300W, or 500W. LED technology delivers equivalent light output at a fraction of the energy:
- 150W halogen → 10–20W LED (lumen output ~800–1,500 lm)
- 300W halogen → 30–40W LED (lumen output ~2,400–3,200 lm)
- 500W halogen → 50–70W LED (lumen output ~4,000–6,000 lm)
For domestic driveways and garden security, 10–20W LED is sufficient. For commercial car parks, warehouse exteriors, and large perimeter areas, 50–100W LED fittings are more appropriate. Modern LED floodlights also eliminate the warm-up time associated with older metal halide or high-pressure sodium area lights.
IP Ratings for Outdoor Floodlights
All outdoor floodlights must carry an appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The second digit governs water resistance:
- IP44 — protected against water splashes from any direction. Suitable for sheltered outdoor positions under canopies or eaves, not directly exposed to rain.
- IP54 — dust-protected and splash-proof. Minimum for most exposed outdoor positions.
- IP65 — fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. Standard for open-air floodlights mounted on external walls, fences, and soffits.
- IP66 — dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. Required for coastal installations, car wash areas, and anywhere subject to high-pressure cleaning.
- IP67/IP68 — submersion-rated. Required for in-ground or pond-side fittings.
For most UK domestic floodlight replacements, IP65 is the minimum acceptable rating. Manufacturers sometimes rate LED floodlights as IP65 at the driver housing but IP66 at the LED module — always check both figures when specifying to a customer.
Colour Temperature for Security and Area Lighting
LED floodlights are available in cool white (5000–6500K), neutral white (4000K), and warm white (2700–3000K):
- Cool white (5000–6500K) — maximises perceived brightness and alerting effect. Common for security and deterrent lighting, CCTV-supporting illumination, and commercial perimeter use.
- Neutral white (4000K) — good colour rendering at task areas. Preferred for garages, workshops, and loading bays where visibility of detail matters.
- Warm white (2700–3000K) — more domestic aesthetic. Less harsh for residential garden lighting and entrance canopy fittings.
Where a customer has an existing CCTV system, cool or neutral white gives the camera sensor maximum signal. Warm white can reduce camera performance at night due to lower colour temperature and apparent lux.
PIR Sensors — Integrated vs External
Passive infrared (PIR) sensors detect body heat movement and switch the floodlight on automatically. There are two installation methods:
Integrated PIR Floodlights
The PIR sensor is built into the floodlight body or a dedicated adjuster head on the fitting. This is the standard approach for domestic driveways and garden security. No separate wiring or sensor head required — the fitting connects directly to the supply cable. Adjustment is by screwdriver to set sensitivity, time delay (typically 5 seconds to 8 minutes), and lux threshold (so the light only fires at night).
External PIR Sensors
A separate PIR sensor head switches a standard (non-PIR) floodlight. This approach allows:
- The floodlight to be positioned where the PIR cannot be mounted (e.g. under a canopy with no line of sight)
- Multiple floodlights controlled by one PIR zone
- Replacement of the PIR sensor without disturbing the main fitting
When wiring an external PIR to a floodlight, the PIR is connected in series in the live feed. The neutral and earth pass straight through. Always check the PIR's maximum load rating — a 10A PIR can switch a maximum of ~2,400W at 240V, which comfortably covers most domestic LED floodlights but must be checked if switching multiple fittings.
Wiring Considerations for Floodlight Installations
Supply and Circuit Protection
Outdoor floodlights must be protected by an RCD (Residual Current Device). Under BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition), all socket outlets and circuits supplying outdoor locations require 30mA RCD protection. Where the floodlight is permanently wired (not socket-connected), an RCBO or RCD protecting a dedicated circuit is the recommended approach.
Cable Routing
Twin and earth (6242Y) or single-core in conduit are both acceptable for wall-surface wiring to a floodlight. Where cable runs externally:
- Surface routes must be in UV-resistant conduit or trunking
- Below-ground routes require armoured cable (SWA) or cable rated for direct burial
- Entry points into the fitting must be sealed — use IP-rated cable glands to maintain the fitting's IP rating
Cable Size
Most domestic LED floodlights draw under 0.5A even at 30W. A 1.0mm² T&E circuit (rated 13.5A at reference method B) is adequate for most garden/driveway floodlight circuits. Use 1.5mm² where the circuit run is long (over 20m) or where multiple floodlights are on one circuit.
Earthing
All Class I (metal-bodied) floodlights require an earth connection. Class II (double-insulated) fittings — marked with the double-square symbol — do not require earth at the fitting but must still be connected to a properly earthed circuit.
PIR Adjustment — Setting Up on Site
Most integrated PIR floodlights have three adjustments accessible via slotted screwdriver:
- Sensitivity (SENS) — controls the detection range. Reduce if the light is triggering from road traffic or animals. Increase to cover the full driveway length.
- Time delay (TIME) — sets how long the light stays on after triggering. Factory default is often 5 minutes. For porch lighting, 30 seconds may be sufficient. For security deterrent use, 3–5 minutes is typical.
- Lux threshold (LUX) — prevents the PIR from triggering in daylight. Set fully clockwise for night-only operation. A mid-position setting allows triggering at dusk/dawn — useful for cloudy UK conditions.
Building Regulations Considerations
External lighting is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations in England (Electrical Safety in Dwellings) and equivalent standards in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Fixed outdoor floodlight installations are notifiable work and must be either:
- Carried out by a Part P competent person (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA registered), or
- Inspected and certified by the local building control authority
Like-for-like replacement of a floodlight on an existing circuit — same position, same rating — is generally considered not notifiable under the 2013 amendment. However, a new circuit or new external socket requires a full Part P notification.
