LED Lighting Guide: Save Money on Your Energy Bills

LED Lighting Guide: Save Money on Your Energy Bills

LED lighting has revolutionised the way we light our homes and workplaces. If you're still running halogen downlights or old fluorescent tubes, switching to LED could cut your lighting energy costs by up to 90%. In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about choosing and installing LED lighting.

Why Switch to LED?

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • Energy savings: A 5W LED produces the same light as a 50W halogen — that's 90% less energy for the same brightness.
  • Lifespan: Quality LEDs last 25,000-50,000 hours compared to 2,000 hours for halogen. That's potentially 20+ years of use.
  • Heat reduction: LEDs run cool, reducing the risk of fire in enclosed fittings and cutting air conditioning loads in summer.
  • Lower maintenance: Fewer replacements mean less time on ladders and lower costs, especially in commercial settings.
  • Better light quality: Modern LEDs offer excellent colour rendering, dimmability, and a range of colour temperatures.

Understanding LED Specifications

Lumens, Not Watts

With traditional bulbs, we measured brightness in watts. With LEDs, lumens are what matter. Here's a rough conversion guide:

2D energy saving lamp from APM Plumbing & Electrical

  • 25W incandescent = ~250 lumens
  • 40W incandescent = ~470 lumens
  • 60W incandescent = ~800 lumens
  • 100W incandescent = ~1,500 lumens

When shopping for LEDs, look at the lumen output first, then check the wattage to understand energy consumption.

Colour Temperature (Kelvin)

Colour temperature dramatically affects the mood and feel of a room:

  • 2700K (Warm White): A cosy, yellowish glow similar to traditional incandescent bulbs. Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and restaurants.
  • 3000K (Warm White): Slightly cleaner than 2700K but still warm. Popular for modern homes and hospitality.
  • 4000K (Cool White): A neutral, bright white. Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and retail spaces.
  • 6500K (Daylight): A crisp, blue-white light that mimics natural daylight. Used in workshops, garages, and task lighting.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

CRI measures how accurately a light source shows colours compared to natural light. A CRI of 80+ is standard for most applications. For spaces where colour accuracy matters — kitchens, bathrooms, retail — look for CRI 90+.

Types of LED Lighting

LED Downlights

The most common upgrade path. LED downlights replace halogen GU10 or MR16 spots, either as lamp-only replacements or complete fire-rated fittings. They're available in fixed and adjustable versions, and many are IP65 rated for bathrooms. Check out our ceiling and wall lights for our full range.

LED Panels

Flat, slim panels that replace fluorescent ceiling tiles in offices, kitchens, and commercial spaces. Standard sizes include 600x600mm and 1200x300mm. They provide even, flicker-free illumination with a clean, modern look.

LED Battens

The modern replacement for fluorescent strip lights. LED battens are perfect for garages, workshops, utility rooms, and commercial spaces. They're available in various lengths and are easy to surface-mount. Browse our LED battens collection.

LED Bulkheads

Robust, weather-resistant fittings for outdoor use, corridors, stairwells, and communal areas. Available with built-in emergency backup and microwave sensors for automatic switching.

Decorative LED Lighting

From filament-style vintage bulbs to modern pendant lights, LED technology is now available in every decorative style imaginable. You no longer need to sacrifice aesthetics for efficiency.

Dimming LED Lights

Not all LEDs are dimmable, and not all dimmer switches work with LEDs. Key points:

  • Always check the LED is labelled as "dimmable" before purchase.
  • Use a trailing-edge LED dimmer switch — standard leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen often cause flickering.
  • Check the dimmer's minimum load rating. LEDs draw so little power that some dimmers won't function below their minimum threshold.
  • Stick to one brand/model of LED per circuit for consistent dimming performance.

LED Lighting for Bathrooms

Bathroom lighting must meet specific IP (Ingress Protection) ratings depending on the zone:

  • Zone 0 (inside bath/shower): IP67 minimum
  • Zone 1 (above bath/shower to 2.25m): IP44 minimum (IP65 recommended)
  • Zone 2 (0.6m around bath/shower): IP44 minimum

Our bathroom mirror lights are all IP-rated for safe bathroom use.

How Much Can You Save?

Let's look at a typical UK home with 20 halogen downlights running 4 hours per day:

  • Halogen: 20 × 50W × 4hrs × 365 days = 1,460 kWh/year ≈ £438/year (at 30p/kWh)
  • LED: 20 × 5W × 4hrs × 365 days = 146 kWh/year ≈ £44/year
  • Annual saving: ~£394

With LED downlights costing as little as £3-8 each, the upgrade pays for itself within weeks.
