Pegasus Gas Press-Fit Fittings: What Gas Safe Engineers Need to Know

Important: Gas pipework installation, modification, and repair must only be carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. The products described in this article are professional trade items intended for use by qualified, registered gas engineers only.

Press-fit technology has transformed copper water pipework — and now the same principle is available for gas pipework. The Embrass Peerless Pegasus Gas PressFit range brings the speed and consistency of press-fit joining to copper gas installations, giving Gas Safe registered engineers a flameless, solderless alternative for 15mm, 22mm, and 28mm gas pipework.

Why Use Press-Fit for Gas?

For Gas Safe registered engineers, press-fit gas fittings offer several genuine installation advantages over traditional solder-end-feed or compression methods:

  • No naked flame required — eliminates torch risk in kitchens, loft spaces, and renovated properties where fire risk is a concern
  • Faster joints — a press tool cycle takes around 3 seconds per joint; no flux, no solder wire, no cool-down time
  • Consistent joint quality — the press tool makes an identical joint every time, reducing the risk of human error on repetitive runs
  • Auditable record — many press tools log each crimp; useful evidence for Gas Safe inspection records
  • Suitable for inhabited properties — no open flame means no need to isolate rooms for fire risk during connection work

Pegasus Gas PressFit fittings are M-Profile compatible (the same press jaw profile used for Pegasus water press-fit), so engineers already running Pegasus water installations can use the same press tool for gas — just swap to a WRAS/gas-approved fitting from the gas-rated range.

The Embrass Peerless Pegasus Gas PressFit Range

The Pegasus gas range covers the core fitting types needed for domestic and light commercial gas pipework in 15mm, 22mm, and 28mm:

Couplers (Straight Connectors)

Elbows

Reducing Couplers

The range covers the sizes used for the majority of domestic gas pipework. For larger bore commercial installations (35mm+) or for tees and manifold work, contact APM — additional fittings may be available on enquiry.

Isogas Gas Cocks — Compression Isolation

Alongside the press-fit range, APM stocks the Embrass Peerless Isogas gas cock series — compression-end isolation valves in 8mm, 10mm, 15mm, and 22mm for appliance and meter isolation points:

The 22mm version with test nipple is particularly useful at meter connections and main isolation points where Building Regulations or Gas Safe records require a documented tightness test point.

Gas Hose and Appliance Connections

For cooker and hob connections, APM stocks the Embrass Peerless Tesla range:

Press-Fit vs Compression vs Solder for Gas Pipework

Method Speed Flame-free? Demountable? Typical use
Press-fit (Pegasus Gas) Very fast Yes No New runs, refurbishment, occupied properties
Compression Medium Yes Yes Isolation points, short connections, appliance terminations
Solder end-feed Slower No No First-fix new build, concealed permanent runs

Press-fit is not suitable where fittings may need to be repositioned — the crimp is permanent. For appliance terminations and meter connections where future access or adjustment is needed, compression isolation valves remain the correct choice.

Compliance Notes for Gas Safe Engineers

All Embrass Peerless Pegasus gas press-fit fittings are manufactured to comply with relevant UK gas installation standards. Engineers should confirm:

  • The press tool and jaw set are calibrated and in current service certification
  • Press-fit gas fittings are not used in concealed or embedded positions unless specifically permitted by the fitting manufacturer's certification
  • All gas work is notified to Gas Safe Register in accordance with Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
  • Tightness testing is completed and recorded after installation
