DeWalt PH2 screwdriver bits for matching Phillips crosshead screws

PH2 vs PZ2 Screwdriver Bits: Match the Crosshead Before You Drive

PH2 vs PZ2 screwdriver bits is not a branding question. It is a drive-pattern question. Both are size 2 crosshead bits and both can look right at a glance, but Phillips and Pozidriv are different profiles. Match the bit to the screw before pulling the trigger and you get fuller engagement, steadier torque and fewer damaged heads. For electricians, plumbers, kitchen fitters and general trades, that five-second check matters more than the colour of the bit box.

PH2 vs PZ2 Screwdriver Bits: Read the Head, Not the Box Colour

PH means Phillips. PZ means Pozidriv. The number identifies the size, so PH2 and PZ2 are both “No. 2” drives but are not the same geometry. Wera’s explanation of PH and PZ screws and screwdrivers describes PH as a simple cross pattern and PZ as a crosshead with extra wedges forming a star-like pattern.

That gives the quickest site check. Look down at the fastener head in good light. A plain four-arm cross points to Phillips. A Pozidriv head has additional fine lines or ribs between the main cross slots. Then check the marking stamped on the bit itself: PH2 for Phillips No. 2, PZ2 for Pozidriv No. 2. Do not decide by whether a bit will enter the recess. A near-match can still sit high, rock under load or lose contact as torque rises.

PH2 vs PZ2 Screwdriver Bits: Why the Correct Match Matters

The working faces of the bit need to bear properly against the matching faces in the screw. When the profiles correspond, pressure is shared where the drive was designed to take it. When they do not, contact is reduced and the tool is more likely to ride out of the recess. The visible results are familiar: polished corners on the bit, burrs around the screw head, a driver that chatters, and a fastener that becomes harder to remove later.

This is especially important when the fastener must remain serviceable. Electrical accessories, controls, panels, brackets and sanitary fittings are often revisited. A rounded head turns a routine adjustment into extraction work. Start with the correct drive family, keep the bit square to the screw and use only the torque needed for that fixing and material.

When to Choose PH2

Choose PH2 when the screw head has the plain Phillips cross and the fastener or fitting documentation specifies PH2. The DeWalt DT71522 PH2 25mm bit pack is a straightforward van-stock option when a job uses repeated PH2 fasteners. The 25mm length suits a standard compatible bit holder; confirm the holder and power tool are appropriate before use.

Do not assume every crosshead supplied with electrical equipment is Phillips. Read the head and any manufacturer marking. If the bit has noticeable play before the driver starts, stop and recheck the profile and size. Changing the bit is quicker than repairing a recess after it has been chewed.

When to Choose PZ2

Choose PZ2 when the screw head shows the extra Pozidriv identification lines and the fixing calls for size 2. Wera notes that the additional PZ wedges improve power transmission and reduce the likelihood of the driver slipping out. The DeWalt PZ2 25-piece impact bit box provides both 25mm and 57mm PZ2 lengths, plus a holder. Use the length that gives safe, straight access rather than angling the tool to reach around an obstruction.

The longer bit is useful only when it stays aligned. Extra reach does not correct a poor approach angle, and impact-rated accessories do not remove the need to match the screw drive. Check the tool, holder, bit and fixing as one system before applying load.

A 20-Second Crosshead Check Before Driving

  1. Clean the recess. Remove paint, plaster dust or debris so the pattern is visible.
  2. Identify the drive. Plain cross for PH; extra radial marks between the main slots for PZ.
  3. Read the bit. Confirm PH2 or PZ2 rather than relying on memory or case colour.
  4. Seat it by hand. The bit should sit deeply and feel stable without obvious rocking.
  5. Hold square. Keep the driver in line with the fastener.
  6. Set sensible torque. Follow the fixing, fitting and tool manufacturer’s requirements; more force is not a cure for a poor match.

Common Mistakes at the Counter and on Site

The first mistake is asking for “a crosshead bit” without bringing the screw or knowing the marking. The second is treating PH2 and PZ2 as interchangeable because both enter the recess. The third is using a worn bit to judge the screw: once the corners are polished or chipped, even the correct family can feel loose. Keep used and new bits separate, and discard damaged consumables rather than passing the problem to the next fixing.

Another mistake is choosing length before drive type. A long PZ2 bit is not a substitute for a short PH2 bit, and a short PH2 bit is not correct merely because it reaches. Identify PH or PZ first, confirm size 2 second, then choose the length and holder that give controlled access.

Pick Up the Correct Bit in Acton

Bring a sample screw or a clear photo of the head if the marking is uncertain. APM Electricals can help you compare the profile before you leave the counter. Visit 24 Western Avenue, Acton, W3 7TZ or call 020 8702 8080. For repeat fixings, buy the correct labelled pack and keep PH2 and PZ2 separated in the case. It is a small control that saves damaged heads, wasted time and awkward extraction later.
