First Response: Water Control
Before any repair, stop the flow. Emergency water control follows a hierarchy:
- Zone isolation valve — close the nearest service valve on the circuit (often a chrome slotted-head valve on a radiator tail, under a basin, or at the boiler)
- Stopcock — the main in-line stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink or in a utility room) isolates the cold supply to the property
- External stop tap — at the boundary of the property (requires a stop tap key/bar tool); shuts off the supply from the water main
- For heating circuits — turn off the boiler and allow the system to cool; bleed from the drain valve at the lowest point

Simple Saddle Repair Clamps

- A rubber or EPDM liner that forms the water-tight seal around the defect
- A stainless steel or galvanised steel outer band with tightening bolts
To apply:
- Isolate and drain the section
- Clean the pipe surface around the defect — wire brush to remove scale, oxidation, and burrs
- Position the rubber liner over the defect, centred
- Wrap the steel band around the liner and tighten the bolts evenly, alternating sides
- Torque to manufacturer's specification (typically 5–8 Nm for domestic pipe clamps)
- Restore pressure and check for weeping at clamp edges
Pipe repair clamps are available for copper (15mm, 22mm, 28mm), CPVC, PVC-U, MDPE, and cast iron. Matching the clamp to the pipe material and nominal diameter is critical — an undersized clamp will not seal correctly.
Working pressure rating: Most domestic pipe repair clamps are rated to 16 bar — well above normal domestic supply (typically 1.5–3 bar). Check the rating if working on commercial or high-pressure systems.
Slide Repair Couplers (Compression Type)
Where the pipe is cracked, corroded, or has a section that must be removed, a slide repair coupler (also called a repair coupling or slip coupling) provides a permanent join without soldering or specialist tools. These are available in:
- Compression slide couplers — for copper and MDPE; grip via olive compression on both ends; no stop on the insert, allowing the fitting to slide fully onto one pipe before centralising
- Push-fit slide couplers — for copper, PEX, or multilayer pipe; push-fit grab ring holds the pipe; pipe end must be perfectly square-cut and deburred
- Copper-to-copper soldered repair couplers — standard solder ring or end-feed fittings with no internal stop, used for full solder repairs
Installation procedure for compression slide coupler:
- Cut out the damaged section squarely using a pipe slice or hacksaw — remove at minimum 5mm either side of the defect
- Deburr both pipe ends inside and out with a deburring tool or file
- Slide the repair coupler fully onto one pipe end
- Bring the two pipe ends together (the coupler slides over the gap)
- Centralise the coupler so it sits equally over both pipe ends
- Tighten both compression nuts — hand-tight plus 1.25 turns with a spanner for copper; check manufacturer guidance for MDPE (typically lower torque)
Full-Bore Repair Couplers for Push-Fit Systems
JG Speedfit and Hep2O push-fit systems both offer slide-in repair couplers designed specifically for emergency repairs. These use the same grab-ring mechanism as standard fittings but have a free-sliding body that allows installation without cutting the pipe back to a tee or union.
For Speedfit: the SM28SP slide fitting for 15mm and 22mm copper accommodates up to 5mm gap; for longer cuts, use an insert with a standard coupler and small length of new pipe to bridge the gap.
Epoxy Pipe Repair Compounds
For situations where clamps or couplers are impractical — awkward locations, oddly sized pipe, temporary emergency repair awaiting a proper fix — epoxy pipe repair putty or wrap provides a temporary (and sometimes permanent) seal.
Epoxy Putty Sticks
Two-part epoxy putty (supplied as a single stick with a core of one component and outer ring of the second) is kneaded together to initiate the cure. Applied to a dry, clean pipe surface, it cures to a rigid, waterproof seal within minutes. Key properties:
- Maximum working temperature: varies by product; most domestic plumbing grades are rated to 120°C
- Can be applied to damp or wet surfaces on some formulations (check product data sheet)
- Suitable for: copper, iron, steel, PVC, concrete

Self-Amalgamating Tape
Silicone self-amalgamating tape is a fast, tool-free temporary repair for pinhole leaks, cracked pipe bodies, or weeping fittings. Applied by stretching and wrapping tightly, the tape fuses to itself under tension — no adhesive required. Key uses:
- Temporary seal on a dripping joint while arranging a full repair
- Wrapping around electrical penetrations through damp wall cavities
- Waterproofing outdoor pipe connections
Self-amalgamating tape is rated for water but not as a standalone long-term repair on pressurised pipes. Treat it as a hold-while-you-fix solution, not a permanent repair.
Copper Pipe Repairs: Solder vs. Compression vs. Push-Fit
Three main jointing methods exist for copper pipe, each with different emergency repair suitability:

Where a permanent soldered repair is ultimately required (e.g., a concealed joint inside a partition wall that must last the building's life), do the push-fit emergency repair first to restore service, then drain down and solder at a convenient time.
MDPE (Blue Water Pipe) Leak Repair
MDPE pipework (used for underground cold water mains from the stop tap to the property) requires specific repair fittings. Standard copper fittings will not work. Options:
- MDPE compression couplers — Philmac, JG, and Plasson make push-in style compression couplers for 20mm, 25mm, and 32mm MDPE; these use a toothed gripper ring inside a threaded body
- MDPE repair clamps — saddle-type clamps with rubber seal and stainless steel band, sized for MDPE OD
- Transition fittings — where MDPE meets copper at the rising main, MDPE-to-copper compression transition fittings allow a change of material without adaptors
Important: MDPE underground supply pipes can be under significant supply pressure (up to 6 bar in some areas). Ensure any repair fitting is rated for the system pressure, and test at full supply pressure before reinstatement.
Cast Iron and Lead Pipe Repairs
Older properties may have cast iron soil pipes or lead supply pipes. Both require specific approaches:
Cast Iron Soil Pipe
- Repair clamps with EPDM seals are available for cast iron from 50mm to 160mm
- Push-fit conversion couplers allow direct connection of modern PVC-U or PP soil pipe to cast iron sockets — eliminates the need to cut out large sections
- Boss connectors allow waste pipe branch connections into cast iron without full section removal
Lead Supply Pipe
- Lead pipe must not be repaired and re-used for potable water supplies — WRAS and water companies advise replacement

Testing After Emergency Repair
After any emergency pipe repair, a pressure test confirms the repair integrity before reinstatement:
- Cold water supplies: restore supply slowly, visually inspect at 1 bar, then check at full supply pressure (typically 1.5–3 bar) for 30 minutes
- Heating systems: repressurise to 1.5 bar cold, run up to operating temperature, check for seepage at all repair points
- Compression fittings: a small amount of tightening is permissible after a leak is visible — do not over-tighten (copper olives crush and may leak worse if deformed)
