Plumbing fixings are bought in large quantities and rarely thought about until they fail. Choosing the wrong clip, undersizing a bracket, or using a ferrous fixing in a wet environment creates callbacks and, in the worst case, structural damage or burst joints. This guide covers the full range of pipe clips, brackets, and supports used in domestic and commercial plumbing and heating installations — with specification guidance for copper, plastic, and CPVC pipe, and for the full range of building substrates.

Why Fixings Matter

Unsupported pipe moves. Thermal expansion in a 22 mm copper hot water line at 60 °C generates significant axial force — enough to fatigue a joint over thousands of heat cycles. Push-fit plastic systems are even more sensitive to inadequate support: Hep2O and JG Speedfit pipework will bow visibly between clips if spacing is too wide. In buried or concealed runs, poorly spaced clips allow vibration that telegraphs water hammer noise into structural elements. Getting fixings right at first fix is always cheaper than going back.

Clip Types for Copper Pipe

Munsen Rings (Two-Piece Pipe Rings)

The standard fixing for copper pipe in accessible locations. A Munsen ring consists of two semicircular halves (or a full ring with a bolt) that clamp around the pipe and attach via a back-plate to the substrate. Available in 15 mm, 22 mm, 28 mm, 35 mm, and larger sizes. The bolt connection allows the ring to be released for pipe replacement without disturbing the backplate fixing. Use with a neoprene or rubber liner when dissimilar metals are in contact (copper pipe in galvanised steel ring, or in masonry with alkaline materials).

Single Pipe Clips (Snap-Fit or Saddle Clips)

Plastic or metal snap-over clips that grip the pipe without a bolt — faster to fit than Munsen rings but less adjustable. Widely used for push-fit plastic pipe (Speedfit blue polysulphone clips, or clear plastic for aesthetic locations). Metal saddle clips in stainless or brass are appropriate for copper. Avoid nailing clips to timber with copper pipe — copper against steel nail is a corrosion pairing in damp environments; use zinc-plated or stainless fixings.

Nail-In Clips

Push-in clip with an integral nail, used primarily for 15 mm and 22 mm plastic push-fit and barrier pipe. Fast to install in timber-frame first fix. Not appropriate for copper. Check nail length is adequate for the timber member (minimum 25 mm penetration into a joist or stud).

Pipe Hooks and Holderbats

Single-sided hook or holderbat fixes to the wall with a single screw and retains the pipe via a circlip or spring clip. Used in boiler houses, plant rooms, and under floors. Less positive than a Munsen ring — pipe can be knocked free — but faster for high-volume service pipework.

Clip Types for Plastic Pipe

Plastic push-fit systems (Speedfit, Hep2O, JG, Wavin) need clips that don't crush the pipe OD or stress the socket connections. Key considerations:

  • Use the correct clip size for the plastic pipe OD — 15 mm plastic pipe (JG Speedfit) is dimensionally the same OD as 15 mm copper, so standard 15 mm clips fit, but ensure they are not over-tightened
  • Avoid metal clips with sharp edges on plastic — abrasion at the clip edge can wear the pipe wall over decades of thermal cycling
  • Polysulphone and polybutylene clips (Speedfit branded) are rated for the same temperature and pressure as the pipe, making them the safest choice in hot water circuits
  • CPVC pipe (Flowseal, FlowGuard) requires specific CPVC-rated clips — standard PVC clips are not rated for 93 °C CPVC service temperatures

Wall Plate Elbows

A wall plate elbow (or wall plate union) combines a structural bracket with a 90° elbow, allowing a horizontal pipe run to terminate in a female or male threaded outlet perpendicular to the wall. Common in bathroom and kitchen installations for bath taps, shower valves, and basin taps where the supply comes from the floor or wall cavity.

Sizes and Types

  • 15 mm copper × ½" BSP female — standard for UK tap connections
  • 22 mm copper × ¾" BSP female — used on bath fills and shower bodies with higher flow demands
  • Double wall plate elbow — pairs two elbows on a single backplate, giving a fixed centres hot and cold outlet (typically 150 mm centres for UK basin and bath sets)
  • Adjustable wall plate elbow — allows centres adjustment of ±15 mm, useful when pipework centres don't exactly match the fitting

Installation Tips

Wall plate elbows must be fixed securely — they take the mechanical load when a tap is operated. Fix through tile where applicable using appropriate tile fixings (frame fixings or cavity anchors for drywall substrates). Check the back-plate is plumb and parallel — a twisted wall plate pulls the tap body into the wall unevenly, risking cracking of acrylic baths or ceramic basins. Always apply PTFE to the male thread before fitting tap connectors; use a backing spanner on the wall plate to avoid stressing the pipe.

Backplate Elbows

Similar to wall plate elbows but without the elbow component — the pipe run continues in the same plane as the outlet, turning at the fitting rather than at the wall. Used where pipe runs horizontally along the wall to a connection point. Also called a "tap connector backplate" in some contexts. Available in the same sizes as wall plate elbows; chrome-plated versions suit exposed bathroom pipework.

Pipe Clips: Spacing Guidance

BS 8558 (Guide to the Design, Installation, Testing, and Maintenance of Services Supplying Water for Domestic Use) and BS EN 806 both give clip spacing guidance, broadly as follows:

Note: Plastic pipe manufacturers publish their own spacing tables — always defer to the manufacturer specification, as it varies by material and temperature rating. Above figures are indicative maxima for general guidance.

Reduce spacing by 25–30% where pipe runs in high-vibration environments (near boilers, pumps, or mechanical plant), or where water hammer is a known risk.

Fixing to Different Substrates

Masonry (Brick, Block, Concrete)

Use frame fixings or masonry anchors appropriate for the substrate. Lightweight block (100 mm Thermalite or similar) has significantly lower pull-out resistance than dense concrete block — use a wider-head frame fixing or a resin anchor in critical load-bearing applications. In all cases, drill perpendicular to the face and clean the hole of dust before inserting anchor.

Timber Joists and Studs

For 15 mm and 22 mm pipe, a 50 mm × 8 g wood screw into a stud centre gives adequate pull-out in 40 × 90 mm CLS stud. Where pipe runs perpendicular to joists (crossing notches), fit clips either side of each joist notch to prevent rocking. Notching limitations under Part A of Building Regulations apply — keep notches to the middle third of joist depth and within the permitted zone.

Drywall (Plasterboard Partitions)

Use cavity toggles, spring toggles, or Gripit-style fixings rated for the clip load. Wall plate elbows must not rely on plasterboard alone — use a noggin or timber backing plate within the partition at tap positions. This should be planned at first fix, before plasterboarding.

Floor Deck and Under-Floor

Pipe clips screwed to the underside of floor deck or to bottom flanges of joists. Avoid over-tightening to timber with single-screw saddle clips — the screw can work loose under vibration. Holderbats with two fixing points are more secure for under-floor applications.

Thermal Expansion Allowance

Hot water and heating pipework expands significantly. 15 mm copper at 75 °C expands approximately 1.1 mm per metre relative to installation temperature (20 °C). A 3 m run gains over 3 mm — enough to stress fittings if both ends are rigidly fixed. Design clip layouts to guide pipe expansion rather than contain it:

  • Anchor point: One fixed clip that prevents all movement — usually at a branch tee or at the boiler manifold
  • Guide clips: Allow axial movement only, preventing lateral buckling — used at intermediate spacing
  • Free end: Expansion loop, offset, or flexible connection absorbs the remaining movement

In practice, many domestic runs are short enough (≤ 2 m between changes of direction) that expansion offsets are naturally accommodated by the pipe geometry. In longer straight runs — cylinder cupboards, airing cupboards, boiler feeds — plan an expansion offset or allow longer clip spacing on one section.

Corrosion and Dissimilar Metal Considerations

Electrolytic corrosion occurs where dissimilar metals contact in the presence of an electrolyte (water, condensation, damp masonry). Risk pairs include:

  • Copper pipe in a cast iron, mild steel, or galvanised steel Munsen ring — use rubber or neoprene liner
  • Copper pipe with steel masonry screws in a damp wall — use stainless or brass screws
  • Plastic pipe with any metal clip in outdoor or condensation-prone situations — ensure no trapped water at the clip

Brass Munsen rings are the safest choice for copper pipe in damp environments. Stainless steel clips suit outdoor drainage and copper. Zinc-plated mild steel is acceptable in dry internal situations but deteriorates within 3–5 years in wet environments.

Bracket and Support Products Used in UK Plumbing

Pipe Clips — 15 mm Plastic Pipe (50-pack)

High-volume product for first-fix push-fit installations. Buy in bulk — losing 5–10% to over-tightening splits and on-site breakage is normal on a full bathroom installation.

22 mm Saddle Clips (10-pack)

For 22 mm copper or plastic main distribution runs. Galvanised or zinc-plated for internal use; stainless for plant rooms or external runs.

Munsen Rings — 15 mm and 22 mm

Two-part bolt-closure rings for exposed copper or steel pipe in plant rooms, boiler houses, and commercial plant. Sizes from 8 mm to 76 mm. Specify with back-plate thread and stud for secure masonry mounting, or with loop for suspension from threaded rod.

Double Wall Plate Elbow Set (150 mm Centres)

Pre-set centres for UK basin and bath set specifications. Fix the backplate before tiling — allows post-tile connections to be made without twisting fixed pipe. Typically chrome-plated or nickel-finish for visible bathroom applications.

Pipe Hooks — 15 mm (10-pack)

Quick-clip hook for undisturbed pipe runs. Useful in airing cupboards and loft distribution runs where speed matters more than permanence.

Nail-In Clips — 15 mm (100-pack)

Predominantly for barrier pipe in underfloor heating or push-fit first fix in timber-frame construction. Not suitable for copper.

Installation Best Practices

  • Mark clip positions before drilling — string line or laser level on long horizontal runs to ensure clips align neatly
  • On copper, clean the pipe surface at the clip position — oil or flux residue prevents a tight grip
  • Tighten Munsen ring bolts firmly but not so hard as to distort the pipe OD — on 15 mm, over-tightening can oval a soft copper tube
  • In notched joists, position clip to one side of the notch rather than at the base — allows the joist notch edges to close without crushing the clip
  • On plastic push-fit systems, fit clips within 150 mm of each socket to prevent lever forces on the socket connection from pipe weight
  • Label hidden pipe runs and bracket positions on the as-installed drawing — critical for future maintenance access
