What Is a Time Switch?
A time switch is a device that automatically energises and de-energises a circuit at preset times. In UK domestic installations the most common applications are:
- Immersion heaters — A dedicated 24-hour or 7-day mechanical time switch on the immersion heater circuit cuts electricity costs by heating water only during off-peak tariff periods (typically Economy 7 midnight–7 am). Part G of the Building Regulations for unvented cylinders requires the ability to timed control.
- Security and garden lighting — A general-purpose 24-hour timer switches outdoor lights on at dusk and off at midnight without manual intervention.
- Central heating programmers — Dedicated programmers control the boiler and, via motorised zone valves, separate heating and hot water circuits. Twin-channel models give independent on/off times for heating and hot water; three-channel models add a third zone for underfloor heating or a secondary zone valve.
Mechanical vs Electronic Time Switches
Mechanical (Analogue) 24-Hour Timers
Mechanical timers use a rotating disc (drum) with push-in trippers that set switching intervals as fine as 15 minutes. They are fail-safe in power cuts — the drum continues to rotate on the residual kinetic energy of the motor for a few seconds then stops; time needs re-setting after power restoration but no program is lost. They suit simple single-zone applications: immersion heaters, single security lights, pump overrides.

Electronic Programmers — Twin and Three Channel
Electronic programmers store multiple on/off events per day and allow different schedules for weekdays, weekends, or individual days. They hold their programme through power cuts using internal battery backup (typically 200-hour lithium cell). In central heating applications they replace the older electromechanical Danfoss or Horstmann units and wire directly to the boiler's 5-wire or 6-wire programmer terminals (L, N, E, CH call, HW call, and common switched live).
Wiring a Twin-Channel Programmer
A twin-channel programmer controls:
- Channel 1 — Central Heating (CH): sends a switched live to the zone valve motorised head or directly to the boiler when heating is demanded.
- Channel 2 — Hot Water (HW): sends a switched live to the hot water zone valve or S-plan DHW circuit.
The standard terminal layout follows the Honeywell/Drayton convention: terminal 1 = Neutral, 2 = Earth, 3 = Permanent Live, 4 = Switched Live (CH), 5 = Switched Live (HW). Always isolate supply at the 6 A fused spur before wiring. Refer to BS 7671:2018 Chapter 46 for isolation and switching requirements.

Three-Channel Programmers
A three-channel programmer adds a third switched output for a second heating zone — common in properties with a separate underfloor heating circuit or two independent boiler zone valves. 7-Day Programmers
A 7-day programmer allows a different on/off schedule for each day of the week — useful for households with variable occupancy patterns. Each channel can store multiple switching events per day (typically 6–8), and most modern units feature a large backlit display, boost function, and advance mode (to force CH or HW on outside programmed times).

Installation Considerations
Fused Spur Protection
Central heating programmers and immersion heater time switches must be protected by a 6 A fused connection unit (FCU) on a dedicated 20 A radial circuit (immersion heater) or connected to the heating controls supply. Refer to our FCU guide for fuse selection and wiring.
S-Plan vs Y-Plan Systems
In S-plan systems, each zone has its own motorised zone valve; the programmer's CH and HW outputs energise separate valve actuators. In Y-plan (mid-position valve) systems, the boiler and pump are interlocked via the valve's auxiliary switch; a single 3-port valve handles both heating and hot water with the programmer providing priority switching. Confirm which system is installed before replacing a programmer, as terminal wiring differs.
Part G and Immersion Heater Timers
Part G of the Building Regulations (Sanitation, hot water safety, and water efficiency) requires that all electric water heaters over 15 litres are fitted with an overheat thermostat and that stored hot water systems have a means of time control. A 24-hour mechanical timer on the immersion heater supply satisfies this requirement at minimal cost. Ensure the timer is rated for the immersion heater load (typically 3 kW = 13 A; specify 16 A unit for headroom).
