Toilet Cistern Fill Valves: Replacing a Faulty Inlet Valve — The Trade Guide

Toilet Cistern Fill Valves: Replacing a Faulty Inlet Valve — The Trade Guide

A continuously hissing toilet or one that takes too long to refill almost always comes down to the cistern fill valve (also called the inlet valve or ball valve). Replacing it is a 20-minute job for any plumber — but the right choice of valve depends on cistern type, entry position, and water pressure. This guide covers every fill valve APM stocks, from trade-workhorse Fluidmaster to premium Geberit and budget ProXFlush options.

Diagnosing the Problem

Before ordering a fill valve, confirm the diagnosis:

  • Continuous hissing / water in overflow: Float is set too high, or valve isn't fully closing — fill valve replacement or adjustment
  • Slow refill: Valve seat debris, scale build-up, or worn diaphragm — clean first; replace if not resolved
  • No refill at all: Valve seized or float arm snapped — replace
  • Phantom flush: Usually the flush valve (drop valve or syphon), not the fill valve — see our flush valve guide

Bottom Entry vs Side Entry Fill Valves

The entry point of the water supply connection determines which type of valve you need:

  • Bottom entry: The water supply pipe comes up through the cistern floor. Most modern close-coupled WCs and wall-hung cisterns use bottom entry. Standard 15mm compression or ½" BSP connection at the base.
  • Side entry: The supply pipe enters from the side wall of the cistern. Common in older low-level cisterns and some concealed cisterns.

Always check the existing valve entry position before ordering — you cannot substitute a bottom entry for a side entry valve without modifying the pipework.

The Fluidmaster Pro Range

Fluidmaster is the de facto standard for cistern mechanism replacement in the UK trade. The Pro series offers tool-free installation, adjustable fill height, and compatibility with virtually all standard UK cisterns.

Bottom Entry Fill Valves

  • Fluidmaster PRO400UK
The core Pro model: ½" plastic shank, adjustable float arm, anti-syphon WRAS approved. Fits most standard close-coupled and back-to-wall cisterns with bottom water entry. The most specified fill valve for replacement work in the UK trade.
  • Fluidmaster PRO45B
Heavy-duty brass shank version of the PRO400UK — specified where plastic shanks have previously failed (high-frequency use, rental properties, commercial premises). The brass shank resists deformation under repeated tightening and provides a more secure cistern connection.

Side Entry Fill Valves

  • Fluidmaster PRO747UK
Side entry version for older low-level cisterns and some concealed systems. ½" plastic shank, adjustable float height, WRAS approved.

Airgap Versions (Fluidmaster 6000 Series)

The Airgap 6000 series includes an integral backflow preventer — a physical air gap between the water inlet and cistern — providing WRAS Fluid Category 5 backflow protection. This is required where the cistern contains additives (toilet blocks, disinfectants) and the fill valve draws water below the overflow level.

Specify the Airgap 6000 on any installation where the customer uses in-cistern cleaning blocks, or where the water authority specifies Category 5 protection on the cistern supply.

ProXFlush — Budget Option for Rental and Reactive Work

For reactive maintenance, rental properties, and high-volume contract work where cost-per-unit matters, ProXFlush valves offer a reliable low-cost alternative:

The ProXFlush models cover both low and high pressure applications in a single SKU — useful for reactive work where pre-diagnosing the system pressure isn't practical. Brass tail construction for a more durable cistern connection than all-plastic budget valves.

Siamp Telescopic Float Valve

The Siamp 99T ½" BSP Telescopic Bottom Inlet Float Valve uses a traditional float ball and arm mechanism rather than the diaphragm design of Fluidmaster-type valves. Specified in older cisterns designed for ball-float valves where a Fluidmaster-style valve doesn't fit the available space or connection geometry. Telescopic arm allows height adjustment.

Premium Cistern Brands — Geberit and Grohe

For replacement on premium sanitary ware where the original manufacturer's parts are specified, APM stocks:

  • Geberit 244.510.00.1 Fill Valve 380AG — OEM replacement for Geberit Duofix, Sigma, and Delta concealed cistern frames. Ensure the cistern model is confirmed before ordering, as Geberit fill valves are frame-specific.
  • Grohe 37095000 3/8" Side Entry Filling Valve — OEM replacement for Grohe Skate/Cosmo concealed cisterns. 3/8" side entry connection — confirm the inlet size before ordering (some Grohe cisterns use 3/8" not ½").
