An overflow running internally to a drain without being visible is non-compliant. If you encounter an internal overflow on a repair visit, advise the client and note it on the job sheet.

Cistern Water Volume

Since 1993, all new WC suites have been required to flush with a maximum of 7.5 litres per full flush (reduced to 6 litres maximum in 2001 under the 2000 Building Regulations Approved Document G revision). When replacing a cistern or upgrading internals, ensure the new configuration does not result in a flush volume exceeding the current maximum. When to Repair vs Replace the Cistern

The decision between repairing individual cistern internals and recommending a full cistern or suite replacement depends on several factors:

Repair is appropriate when:

  • The cistern body is intact — no cracks, crazing, or porosity
  • The pan and cistern remain as a matched suite with no visible damage
  • The failure is isolated to one internal component (inlet valve, syphon, or lever)
  • The suite is less than 20 years old and parts remain available
  • The customer has no plans to remodel the bathroom

Replacement is worth considering when:

  • Multiple internal components are failing simultaneously, suggesting general end-of-life
  • The cistern is on an oversized 9-litre or older pre-1993 suite — replacement with a 6/4 dual-flush suite will deliver ongoing water savings
  • The cistern or pan is cracked, discoloured, or heavily crazed
  • Concealed cistern systems where internal access is restricted and repeated failure is likely
  • The customer is already remodelling or the bathroom is due for renovation
