A leaking or slow-flushing toilet cistern is one of the most common plumbing call-outs. In the majority of cases the fix is a flush valve or syphon replacement — a 30-minute job once you've got the right part. Syphon vs Drop Valve — What's in the Cistern?

UK toilets use one of two flush mechanisms:

Traditional Syphon

The syphon (or "bell syphon") is the classic UK mechanism, mandated by Water Regulations until the 1990s and still fitted in millions of older toilets. Pulling the handle lifts a diaphragm, which creates a syphon effect to empty the cistern. The water can only flow when the flush is actuated — syphons cannot leak continuously, which is why they were the regulatory standard.

Signs a syphon needs replacing: handle pulls up but cistern doesn't flush; diaphragm is split or worn; handle feels loose or disengaged from the mechanism.

Drop Valve (Flap Valve)

The drop valve is the modern standard — a rubber or silicone-sealed valve at the base of the cistern that lifts when the flush button is pressed and seals again when the cistern refills. Easier to install, quieter, and compatible with dual-flush operation. Drop valves can develop a slow leak ("phantom flush") when the seal deteriorates.

Signs a drop valve needs replacing: phantom flushing every few minutes; cistern refills even when not in use; hissing sound from the overflow pipe.

Quick Selection Guide

Key Measurements Before Ordering

1. Cistern outlet size: Most UK cisterns use a 1½" (38mm) or 2" (51mm) outlet. Measure the existing valve outlet or refer to the cistern manufacturer.
2. Mechanism height: The valve must fit within the internal depth of the cistern. Standard mechanisms are 350mm; measure internal cistern height before ordering.
3. Flush activation: Button-top push? Side lever? Remote pneumatic button? Match the mechanism to the flush type.
4. Single or dual flush: Dual flush is now standard for WRAS-compliant installations (6/4 litre or 4/2.6 litre).
