Twin and Earth Cable Size Guide — Choosing the Right T&E for UK Domestic Electrical Installations

Twin and earth cable is the backbone of UK domestic wiring. Every lighting circuit, ring main, cooker circuit, and electric shower runs on it. But grab the wrong size and you're either overloading the cable or paying over the odds for copper you don't need. This guide cuts through the theory and tells you exactly which size to use for which circuit — with BS 7671 compliance in mind.

What Is Twin and Earth Cable?

Twin and earth — formally 6242Y — is a flat PVC-sheathed cable with two insulated conductors (live and neutral) and a bare earth wire running between them. The outer sheath is grey. It's designed for fixed wiring in dry and damp locations, rated at 300/500V to BS 6004:2012. Every domestic installation uses it, from new builds to kitchen refits to shower replacements.

The designation tells you the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the conductors — for example, 2.5mm² means each of the live and neutral conductors has a cross-sectional area of 2.5 square millimetres. The larger the CSA, the lower the resistance, and the higher the current the cable can safely carry.

T&E Cable Sizes — Which Size for Which Circuit?

The current-carrying capacity of T&E cable depends on its installation method (clipped direct, in conduit, in insulation), the ambient temperature, and the grouping of cables. The figures below are for typical domestic clipped-direct installation as a starting point — always calculate to BS 7671 Appendix 4 for your actual installation conditions.

1.0mm² — Bell Circuits, Low-Load Lighting

Rated for approximately 11A clipped direct. Used for bell circuits, low-load lighting spurs, and small switch drops. Not appropriate for standard lighting circuits on a 6A or 10A MCB if the cable run is long — use 1.5mm² instead for better volt-drop performance.

1.5mm² — Standard Lighting Circuits

Rated for approximately 14.5A clipped direct. The standard choice for domestic lighting circuits protected by a 6A or 10A MCB. Works on most modern LED lighting loads with excellent headroom. Also suitable for 13A fused connection units feeding low-load appliances. If you're doing a lighting circuit on a new build or extension, this is your go-to.

2.5mm² — Ring Mains and Radial Socket Circuits

Rated for approximately 20A clipped direct. The standard for 32A ring main socket circuits and 20A radial circuits. Every house has it — kitchen sockets, living room ring mains, bedroom spurs. If you're running new socket circuits or extending a ring, this is the size you need. Note: ring circuits are protected by a 32A MCB, but the cable itself operates well within capacity due to the parallel path of a ring.

4.0mm² — Cookers and High-Load Radials

Rated for approximately 27A clipped direct. Used for cooker circuits (protected by a 32A MCB), large appliance radials, and high-load dedicated circuits. Also used for sub-mains feeding consumer unit tails where the run is short. If you're installing a freestanding or range cooker up to about 11kW, 4.0mm² is typically correct — but check your volt drop over long runs.

6.0mm² — Large Cooker Circuits and Some Shower Circuits

Rated for approximately 36A clipped direct. Suits large range cookers (Aga, range cooker with dual oven and grill), some electric shower circuits up to approximately 7.5kW on longer runs, and sub-mains to outbuildings with modest loads. Protected by a 40A MCB in most domestic applications.

10mm² — Electric Showers and Instantaneous Water Heaters

Rated for approximately 50A clipped direct. This is the cable for high-power electric showers — typically 9kW to 12.5kW units that require a 40A or 45A MCB with RCD protection. The circuit must be run in 10mm² T&E all the way from the consumer unit to the shower pull-cord switch and on to the shower unit. No joins, no undersized tails. BS 7671 requires a dedicated circuit for electric showers, and 10mm² is non-negotiable for anything above about 8kW.

If you're replacing a shower or fitting a new one, buy a 5M or 10M length — most domestic runs from consumer unit to shower unit fall within this range. Shorter cable lengths reduce waste and cost.

How to Calculate How Much Cable You Need

Measure the actual cable route, not the straight-line distance. Cable runs through wall chases, above ceilings, and along joist notches — always add 15–20% to account for drops, tails, and bends. For a 100m drum of 1.5mm², you'll wire multiple lighting circuits on a standard domestic property. For a shower circuit, a 5M reel is usually right for a bathroom positioned near the consumer unit on the same floor.

Volt drop matters on long runs. The maximum allowable volt drop for a lighting circuit is 3% (6.9V on a 230V supply) and 5% (11.5V) for power circuits, per BS 7671. On very long runs in large properties, you may need to upsize — 2.5mm² for lighting if the run exceeds 30–40m, or 6mm² for a ring extension with a long radial leg.

T&E Cable Standards

All twin and earth cable for fixed wiring in UK domestic installations must comply with BS 6004:2012 and carry BASEC approval. The cable uses harmonised conductor colours — brown for live, blue for neutral, bare copper for earth (sleeved green/yellow at terminations). Never use old red/black T&E on new circuits; where extending an old installation, the cable colours must be labelled at the board to avoid confusion.

Always sleeve bare earth conductors with green and yellow PVC sleeving at junction boxes, consumer unit terminals, socket backs, and light fittings. A bare earth conductor in a live enclosure is a wiring defect — it's not earthed until it's terminated.
