WAGO Connectors Explained: Pushwire vs 221 Lever — Which One and How to Use Them

WAGO connectors have become the standard on UK domestic and commercial installs. Quick to fit, reusable, and BS 7671 compliant — most electricians carry a mix of pushwire and 221 lever connectors as standard. But which type do you reach for, and when? This guide covers the two main WAGO families in stock at APM, how to use them correctly, and which jobs each one suits.

Pushwire vs 221 Lever: What Is the Difference?

WAGO makes two distinct types of in-line splicing connector you will use day-to-day on installs.

Pushwire (PUSH WIRE) connectors use spring-cage clamping technology. Strip the conductor, push it in — the spring grabs it and holds it. No lever, no tool. Fast and compact, ideal for solid or stranded conductors on straightforward joints where you are not planning to revisit.

221 Series LEVER-NUT connectors add an orange lever that opens the clamp before you insert the wire. The big advantage: you can open the lever and remove the conductor cleanly, making the joint fully reusable. These handle solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors — useful when working with a mix of cable types in the same enclosure.

Both families carry CE and UKCA markings for UK installs under BS 7671 and are rated to 450V / 32A depending on the model and cross-section.

How to Fit WAGO 221 Lever Connectors Correctly

The 221 series is the connector most electricians reach for first. Here is the correct procedure:

1. Strip 11mm of insulation — WAGO prints the strip length on the connector body. Use it. Too short and you get a poor connection; too long and bare conductor sits outside the housing.
2. Open the lever fully — lift the orange lever until it clicks open. This disengages the CAGE CLAMP spring and opens the conductor entry.
3. Insert the conductor fully — push until the conductor seats against the back stop. The transparent housing gives you visual confirmation.
4. Close the lever — press it down until it clicks. The clamp actuates and grips the conductor.
5. Tug test and check the test port — give the wire a firm tug to confirm it is secure. Every 221 connector has an integrated test point: put your probe directly on the connector without disturbing the joint.

For solid conductors in pushwire connectors, the process is simpler: strip 10–12mm and push straight in. To release, insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the release slot beside the conductor entry.

Which Connector for Which Job?

Reach for pushwire connectors when:

• You are jointing solid conductors in a ceiling rose or behind a fitting that will not be revisited
• Speed is the priority — pushwires are faster when doing volume work on a new-build
• The enclosure is tight and you need the lowest profile possible

Reach for 221 lever connectors when:

• You are mixing conductor types — solid, stranded, and flexible in the same joint (common on lighting circuits with tails and loop cables)
• You need a reusable joint — a job that will be extended or altered later
• The conductor is fine-stranded and pushwire spring-clamping might not grab reliably
• It is a first fix and the second-fix electrician may need to adjust
