Washing Machine Plumbing — Inlet Hoses, Isolation Valves and Waste Traps for UK Plumbers
Installing or reconnecting a washing machine is one of the most common domestic plumbing jobs in the UK. Every time a machine is moved, replaced, or installed in a new position, the plumber needs three things: a reliable inlet hose, an isolation valve to allow servicing without draining down the system, and a properly fitted waste trap to prevent sewer smells backing up into the machine. Get any of these wrong and you're either back on a callback or the customer's kitchen is flooded. This guide covers the key components and what to look for on a standard washing machine plumbing job.
Washing Machine Inlet Hoses
The inlet hose connects the washing machine's water inlet valve to the household supply. UK machines use a standard 3/4" BSP fitting at the machine end, and the other end connects to the isolation valve or supply pipe. Most inlet hoses are supplied with the machine, but they're often short, low quality, or the wrong length for the installation position — and they perish over time. A quality replacement hose from a plumbing merchant will outlast the budget hose that comes in the box.
Red inlet hoses are for hot water supplies; blue are for cold. Most modern washing machines are cold-fill only, so you'll typically only need a cold (blue) hose — but older machines or kitchen installations may still use both. The standard length is 1.5m, which suits most under-counter installations. If the machine is positioned further from the supply, you can use an extension or a longer hose — do not join two hoses together with a connector as this creates a leak point under pressure.
Always replace the rubber sealing washers when fitting a hose. They're included in the bag with quality hoses, but if you're reusing an old hose after a machine swap, check the washer is in good condition before tightening. Over-tightening a hand-tight fitting with a washer missing will crack the machine's inlet valve body.
Washing Machine Isolation Valves
Regulations aside, a washing machine isolation valve is just good practice: it lets the homeowner isolate the machine quickly if a hose fails, and lets you service the machine without turning off the whole house. The standard fitting is a 15mm x 3/4" valve — 15mm to connect into the copper or plastic supply pipework, 3/4" BSP male outlet to accept the machine's inlet hose.
Self-cutting washing machine valves (also called saddle valves or self-tapping valves) are a convenient option for retrofit installations. Rather than cutting into the supply pipe and soldering or pressing a tee, you clamp the valve body over the existing pipe and turn the handle — the internal blade cuts through and creates the connection in one action. These are suitable for copper pipe only, and must not be used on plastic pipe. They're quicker to install but create a small risk of internal scale build-up at the cut point over time; on new installations, a proper tee and dedicated valve is preferable.
For installations where a tee is already in place, a straightforward angled washing machine valve (15mm x 3/4" angled) is the neater solution — it turns the connection 90 degrees to point the hose directly towards the machine rather than running it back behind the cabinet.
Tee Washing Machine Taps
A tee washing machine tap is a combined solution: it installs onto the 15mm pipework like a standard service valve but has a 3/4" BSP outlet for the washing machine hose plus a standard tap outlet for the existing supply. This lets you maintain the existing supply connection — useful in situations where the washing machine is being added to a run that also supplies a kitchen tap, or where a second appliance (like a dishwasher) shares the same supply branch.
These are a trade favourite for kitchen installations where space is tight and adding a full tee and separate valve would require more pipe work. The chrome-plated finish suits exposed pipework under an open-plan kitchen without looking out of place.
Washing Machine and Appliance Waste Traps
The waste outlet from a washing machine (and dishwasher) drains at high volume — up to 60 litres per minute during the spin pump cycle. The waste trap must handle this flow without backing up or siphoning dry. UK standard is a 1.1/2" (40mm) inlet with a standpipe or hose connector outlet. The machine's waste hose has a ribbed end that push-fits into the trap inlet.
A proper appliance trap is P-shaped to retain a water seal against sewer gases. The classic failure mode on cheap bottle traps is siphoning: the high flow rate during pumping pulls the water seal out of the trap, leaving it dry, and sewer gas then enters the machine drum and the room. Use a trap designed for appliances — these have a deeper seal or an anti-siphon feature. If the smell problem persists after fitting, the waste run may be too long or have insufficient fall, and an anti-siphon valve (air admittance valve) on the waste run will solve it.
The 3" (76mm) leg on a standard 1.1/2" x 3" trap suits most under-counter installations with the trap sitting on the cabinet base. For installations in a utility room where the waste outlet is at skirting level, a deeper trap or extended pipe run to a standpipe may be needed.
Fitting Tips for UK Plumbers
- Check the fall: Washing machine waste needs a minimum 1:40 fall (25mm per metre) to drain properly. A flat run will cause slow drainage and repeated blockages.
- Don't overtighten BSPT connections: The 3/4" BSP fitting at the machine inlet is usually plastic. Hand tight plus 1/4 turn with grips is enough — more and you'll crack the inlet valve body.
- Always use PTFE on threaded connections: The hose-to-valve BSP connection is not a compression fitting — it relies on the rubber washer in the hose coupling. Do not use PTFE tape on the hose connector itself, but do use it on any male threads at the valve body end.
- Label the isolator: Fit a label or disc to the isolation valve so the homeowner knows what it controls. On a callout in five years, they'll thank you.
