WC Pan Connectors and Toilet Installation: A Trade Guide to Close-Coupled, Back-to-Wall, and Wall-Hung WCs
The humble pan connector is one of the most-replaced items in a plumber's van — yet getting the wrong one costs time, creates callbacks, and can mean a toilet that rocks, leaks, or smells. This guide covers everything trade professionals need to know about pan connector selection, toilet installation best practice, and soil pipe connections that comply with Part H of the Building Regulations.
Pan Connector Types: Which One Do You Need?
Pan connectors join the toilet outlet to the soil pipe or soil branch. The main variables are:
By Outlet Orientation
- Horizontal (P-trap) outlet — pan outlet points straight back into the wall. Common in UK housing stock, particularly pre-1980s buildings where the soil stack runs inside the wall or floor.
- Vertical (S-trap) outlet — pan outlet points downward into the floor. Found in ground-floor installations with a below-ground drainage connection.
- Combination (multi-fit) — flexible connector that accommodates both orientations and offsets up to 100mm horizontally and 50mm vertically. The workhorse connector for most remedial work.
By Pan Type
- Close-coupled WC — cistern bolts directly onto the pan. Standard residential installation. Pan connector joins the 110mm outlet at the rear or underside of the pan.
- Low-level suite — cistern mounted on the wall just above the pan, connected by a short flush pipe. Less common now but still found in older properties.
- Back-to-wall WC — pan pushes flush against the wall with the cistern concealed in a frame or duct. Connector must clear the frame and align with the in-wall soil connection.
- Wall-hung WC — pan suspended on a steel frame (carrier frame) with no floor contact. Connector is typically a rubber spigot built into the frame, mating with the soil branch.
Flexible vs. Rigid Connectors
Flexible pan connectors (e.g., Embrass Peerless 100/110mm flex connector) are the default choice for most installations. The accordion body accommodates minor misalignments and removes stress from the soil pipe joint. Length typically ranges from 95mm to 305mm extended. Diameter: 110mm OD to match standard UK soil pipe.
Rigid push-fit connectors are used where the soil pipe alignment is exact and no movement is needed — typically new-build installations where the soil branch has been precisely positioned.
Important dimensions: UK WC outlets are standardised at 110mm (4 inch). The soil stack and all branches should also be 110mm. Never reduce to 82mm waste pipe for a WC — this is non-compliant with Part H and will block.
Measuring for a Replacement Pan Connector
Before ordering, measure:
- Horizontal offset (P-trap) — distance from the back of the pan outlet to the face of the wall/soil entry. This is your "reach" dimension. A standard flexible connector extends from ~95mm to ~305mm, covering most scenarios. If offset exceeds 300mm, use an offset connector or reposition the soil branch.
- Vertical drop (S-trap) — depth from the pan outlet centreline to the floor-level soil entry.
- Lateral offset — horizontal misalignment between the pan outlet centreline and the soil branch centreline. Many multi-fit connectors allow ±25mm lateral offset. Beyond this, a soil boss or offset branch is needed.
- Pan-to-wall clearance — for back-to-wall installations, confirm the connector will not push the pan forward of its intended position. A pan pushed 30mm too far from the wall looks unprofessional and can misalign the fixing kit.
Soil Pipe and Branch Connections
The WC pan connector feeds into the 110mm soil system. For connection to the main stack, you need a 110mm soil branch fitting. Options:
- 92.5° swept branch — the standard single branch, used when one WC connects to the stack. Always use a swept (curved) entry, not a right-angle tee, to avoid turbulence and blockages.
- Double branch — allows two connections at the same height on the stack. Used in en-suite/bathroom pairs on the same floor level.
- Boss adaptor — when you need to connect a WC to an existing stack without cutting in a full branch. The boss saddle clamps to the pipe and accepts a 110mm spigot. Requires a 110mm hole saw and creates a less-than-ideal swept entry — use only where a full branch replacement is impractical.
Push-fit 110mm soil fittings use a ring-seal (rubber O-ring) joint. These allow approximately 12mm of withdrawal movement, which is useful during installation but means the joint must be re-checked after the pan is fixed. Always lubricate the O-ring with washing-up liquid or pipe lubricant — never with petroleum-based products, which degrade the rubber seal.

Close-Coupled WC Installation: Step-by-Step
1. Position the Pan
Offer the pan up to the wall with the connector in place. Check that the connector engages the soil entry squarely — do not force an angular connection. Mark the floor fixing holes. On solid floors, use a diamond core bit or masonry bit to drill fixing holes; on timber floors, use the pan's plastic floor bolts into the subfloor (not into floating floorboards, which flex).
2. Fix the Pan
Modern WC pans are fixed with two floor bolts through slotted holes in the pan foot. Tighten only until snug — overtightening cracks vitreous china. Where the floor is uneven, pack with plastic packers before fixing; never use the fixing bolts to pull the pan down to the floor.
3. Install the Cistern
For close-coupled suites, the cistern sits on the back ledge of the pan and is secured by two long stainless steel bolts through the pan and cistern base, with rubber washers both sides. The inlet valve (float valve) connects to the water supply — typically 15mm compression or push-fit from a service valve (isolation valve). The flush valve outlet connects to the pan's flush horn via a doughnut washer.
Check the cistern-to-pan bolt torque: the rubber washer between cistern base and pan top is the only waterproof seal here. It must compress uniformly. Uneven tightening causes the cistern to rock and the seal to fail.
4. Water Supply and Service Valve
Every WC cistern must have an accessible isolation valve (service valve) on the supply pipe, usually a quarter-turn ¼" or ½" type. This allows the cistern to be isolated without turning off the whole property. For service valve selection, see our guide to Isolation Valves and Service Valves.
5. First Flush and Leak Check
Turn on the supply slowly. Watch the inlet valve float rise and shut off cleanly. Check the overflow pipe (if fitted) for dripping — this indicates the inlet valve seat is worn or the float is set too high. After filling, inspect all connections: cistern-to-pan doughnut washer, pan connector to soil pipe, supply hose connections at both ends.
Back-to-Wall WC Installation
Back-to-wall pans require a concealed cistern — either a purpose-built plasterboard duct frame or a furniture unit. The cistern, frame, and flush plate are typically supplied as a package (or "BTW suite"). Key installation points:
- Frame position — the frame must be plumb and level. Most frames are height-adjustable to accommodate different floor-to-ceiling heights. The cistern inside must be accessible via the flush plate/service hatch for maintenance.
- Soil pipe entry — plan the soil entry point before building the duct. Once tiled, repositioning requires full duct demolition. Rough-in dimension: most BTW pans have a floor-level soil entry with the pan outlet centreline at approximately 140–180mm from the finished wall face and 190–220mm above finished floor level. Confirm against the specific product datasheet.
- Flush connector — a chrome or brushed flush pipe connects the concealed cistern outlet to the pan flush horn. Ensure it is not pinched by the frame.
- Water supply to cistern — typically bottom-inlet or side-inlet to the in-wall cistern. Use flexible braided hose between the isolation valve and cistern to allow minor adjustment. Ensure the cistern is fully accessible via the flush plate before closing in the duct.
Wall-Hung WC Installation
Wall-hung WCs are more complex and typically associated with new-build or bathroom refurbishment. They require a structural carrier frame fixed to the wall studwork or blockwork — not plasterboard alone.
Frame Selection and Fixing
Carrier frames come in two main types:
- Floor-mounted frame — stands on the floor and is braced against the wall. Suitable for stud walls and blockwork. The frame legs spread the pan load to the floor.
- Wall-fixed frame — fixed purely to the wall structure. Requires solid masonry or a reinforced stud wall capable of taking the dynamic load of a person sitting on the pan.
Always check the frame manufacturer's load rating. Most domestic frames are rated for 400kg static load. Fixing into timber studs requires through-bolts with large washers, not just screws.
Soil Connection
Wall-hung pans typically have a horizontal outlet at approximately 230mm above finished floor level. The frame incorporates a spigot at this height that connects to the soil pipe running horizontally through the wall. Where the soil stack is vertical, a swept 92.5° bend brings the branch horizontal. The connection is usually push-fit ring-seal.
Fixing Height
The frame sets the pan height. Standard finish is 400–420mm from finished floor to top of pan rim — check with the client before fixing, as taller users often prefer 460mm. Set once, as repositioning after tiling is impractical.
Common Problems and Callbacks
Toilet Rocking
Cause: floor bolts into floating floorboards, or pan base not fully in contact with floor. Fix: always pack gaps between pan base and floor with plastic packers before fixing. Never rely on silicone alone to bed a rocking pan.
Pan Connector Smell
Cause: the pan connector is not properly engaged in the soil pipe, creating an open path for drain gases. Fix: ensure the connector is fully home in the soil branch — push-fit connectors need to be inserted 25–40mm past the socket face. Also check that the rubber boot of the flex connector is seated against the pan outlet with no gaps.
Cistern Slow-Fill or No-Fill
Cause: debris in the isolation valve or inlet valve seat. Fix: close the isolation valve, flush the cistern empty, remove the inlet valve head, and clear any debris from the seat and strainer. New inlet valves are inexpensive — if the valve is old, replace it rather than reseating.
Phantom Flushing (Cistern Refilling Spontaneously)
Cause: flush valve flap or siphon diaphragm is worn, allowing water to trickle from the cistern into the pan continuously, eventually dropping the cistern below the float cutoff point. Fix: replace the flush valve siphon diaphragm or dual-flush valve seal. Takes 20 minutes and costs under £5 in parts.
Cracked Pan from Overtightening
Vitreous china cracks if floor bolt nuts are overtightened. Always fit plastic tap washers under the fixing caps — they give the fixing a firm seat without concentrating force on the china. If a pan must be fixed very firmly (e.g., public facilities), use a rubber-grommet fixing kit.
WC Regulations and Compliance
Part H — Drainage
Building Regulations Part H requires that WC soil branches are swept (not right-angle) entry and that the soil system is adequately vented to prevent siphonage of trap seals. Where a WC is the only fitting on a branch, the branch must either connect within 6 metres of the main stack, or a dedicated air admittance valve (AAV) must be fitted at high level on the branch. Part G — Water Efficiency
New WC installations in new dwellings must use cisterns with a maximum flush volume of 6 litres (full flush) with a 4-litre reduced flush. Dual-flush WCs with 6/4 litre operation are the standard. In refurbishments, the water efficiency requirement is not mandatory unless it is a material change of use, but it is good practice.
Water Regulations (Water Fittings Regulations 1999)
The cistern must be a WRC-approved fitting. Dual-flush valves and inlet valves must meet the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) requirements. In practice, all branded plumbing products from reputable manufacturers (Fluidmaster, Wirquin, Dudley, etc.) carry WRAS approval — check the packaging.

Pan Connectors
For most replacement work, the flexible multi-fit pan connector is the correct choice. Key specification:
- Diameter: 110mm (standard UK WC)
- Length range: choose based on your horizontal offset measurement
- Material: rubber body with ABS or PP collar
- Offset: ±25mm lateral adjustment as standard; multi-fit types up to ±50mm
For back-to-wall installations with precise soil branch positioning, a rigid push-fit connector avoids the accordion body fouling inside a tight duct. Rigid connectors are also preferred for wall-hung WC frames where a neat, fixed connection is required.
Cistern Repair Parts
Fluidmaster and Wirquin are the trade-preferred brands for fill valves (inlet valves) and flush valves. Fluidmaster 400A series inlet valves are compatible with virtually all cistern designs and are a direct replacement for most existing valves. Keep a 400A and a siphon diaphragm repair kit in your van — they resolve 80% of cistern problems.
