Wired Doorbell Systems — Bell Transformers, Chime Units, and Push Buttons for UK Electricians

Wired doorbell systems remain the preferred choice for new-build and refurbishment projects where a reliable, battery-free solution is needed. Unlike wireless doorbells, a wired system draws power continuously from a mains bell transformer, so there are no batteries to replace and no range limitations. This guide covers how wired doorbell systems work, how to select and size the correct bell transformer, how to wire a chime unit and push button to BS 7671 requirements, and what products are available from APM Electricals for fast, direct delivery to site.

How a Wired Doorbell System Works

A standard wired doorbell system consists of three components:

  1. Bell transformer — steps down 230V mains supply to a safe extra-low voltage (typically 8V, 12V, or 24V AC) for the bell circuit
  2. Push button (bell push) — a momentary contact switch installed at the door; pressing it completes the low-voltage circuit
  3. Chime unit or bell buzzer — the audible output device, wired to the transformer secondary and activated by the push button

Because the bell circuit operates at extra-low voltage (ELV) — defined in BS 7671 as not exceeding 50V AC — it is exempt from many of the protection requirements that apply to 230V circuits. However, the primary side of the bell transformer (the 230V feed) must be wired and protected in accordance with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022, including correct overcurrent protection, earthing, and isolation.

Bell Transformers: Voltage Outputs and Sizing

Bell transformers are available in several output voltage ratings to match different chime and bell units:

Some bell transformers offer multi-tap outputs (e.g., 8V/12V/24V) on the secondary winding, allowing the installer to select the appropriate voltage for the chime unit by connecting to the correct terminal. Always check the chime unit's rated voltage before connecting — connecting an 8V chime to a 24V tap will damage the unit.

Transformer Power Rating (VA)

Bell transformers are rated in VA (volt-amperes) rather than watts. A standard single-chime residential installation draws very little current — a typical 8V/1A transformer (8VA) is adequate for a single push button and chime. Where multiple push buttons are used (front door and back door), or where a video doorbell with integrated electronics is fitted, a higher VA rating is needed. As a rule of thumb:

  • Up to 8VA: single push button + simple chime or buzzer
  • 8–15VA: two push buttons, electronic chime units
  • 15VA+: video doorbells, chimes with amplification, or commercial applications

Transformer Mounting

Bell transformers are designed to mount in a 2-module consumer unit enclosure DIN-rail slot (2 MOD), or to be surface-mounted in a back box or enclosure. The mains primary connection is made internally to the transformer; the low-voltage secondary terminals are accessible on the front face. Many electricians fit the bell transformer in the consumer unit, adjacent to the MCB protecting the bell circuit, which keeps the mains-side wiring within the board and limits accessible ELV conductors to the bell circuit cables only.

Wiring a Bell Transformer

Primary Side (230V)

The bell transformer primary must be supplied from a dedicated way in the consumer unit, protected by a 6A or 3A type B MCB. In an existing installation where a spare way is unavailable, the transformer may be connected via a fused connection unit (FCU) with a 3A cartridge fuse, but this approach is less common in new-build work. The supply cable must be installed in accordance with BS 7671 — typically 1.0mm² or 1.5mm² twin and earth (6242Y) for a dedicated bell circuit.

Important: The bell transformer requires earthing on the primary side. Although the secondary output is ELV and does not itself require earthing, the transformer enclosure must be bonded to earth. Verify that the transformer's primary earth terminal is connected and that the supply cable includes a CPC (circuit protective conductor).

Secondary Side (8V/12V/24V ELV)

The secondary (low-voltage) terminals connect to the bell circuit using 2-core bell wire (typically 0.5mm² or 1mm² solid or stranded copper). Bell wire does not need to be installed in conduit or trunking (as it is ELV), but should be neatly routed and not left accessible where it could be confused with 230V wiring.

The circuit topology is simple:

  • Secondary terminal 1 → chime unit common terminal
  • Secondary terminal 2 → push button terminal 1
  • Push button terminal 2 → chime unit trigger terminal

When the push button is pressed, it completes the circuit between the secondary terminals, causing current to flow through the chime unit and activating the chime mechanism.

Two Push Buttons (Front and Back Door)

Many chime units have two trigger inputs — one for each push button — producing different chime tones for front and back door. Wire each push button in the same way, returning to the separate trigger terminals on the chime unit:

  • Secondary terminal 1 → chime common terminal
  • Secondary terminal 2 → front push button → chime trigger terminal 1 (e.g., "ding-dong")
  • Secondary terminal 2 → rear push button → chime trigger terminal 2 (e.g., single "ding")

Bell Push Buttons

The bell push is a normally-open, momentary contact switch — it closes the circuit only while pressed, then springs back to open. Bell pushes are available in surface-mount and flush-mount styles:

  • Surface-mount bell pushes — standard choice for domestic installations; typically fixed to the wall or door frame with two screws; IP-rated versions available for exposed locations
  • Flush-mount (plate style) — installed in a 25mm back box for a neater finish; specify with matching wiring accessory plates for a coordinated look
  • Illuminated bell pushes — incorporate an indicator lamp so the button is visible in low light; the lamp draws a small continuous current, so the transformer must be rated to supply this load continuously

Retractive Bell Switches

A retractive switch (also called a push-to-make or momentary switch) can be used in place of a dedicated bell push where a matching wiring accessory style is required — for example, in a multi-gang plate alongside light switches. Retractive switches are rated at 10A (far above the 0.1–0.5A typically drawn by a bell circuit) but operate identically to a bell push: push closes the contact, release opens it.

Retractive switches are available in most wiring accessory ranges (white moulded, brushed steel, polished chrome, etc.), making them the preferred choice for high-specification installations where a standard bell push would look out of place.

Chime Units and Bell Buzzers

The audible output device must be rated for the transformer secondary voltage. Common types include:

  • Electronic chime units — play recorded tones (e.g., Westminster chime, ding-dong) when triggered; rated 8V or 12V; require a slightly higher VA transformer than a simple buzzer due to internal electronics
  • Bell buzzers — simple electromagnetic vibrating device producing a continuous buzz while the circuit is energised; very low VA requirement; 80dB+ output typical; suitable for commercial or industrial settings
  • Mechanical chime units — use a solenoid-driven striker on tuned rods to produce a two-note chime; the solenoid is rated for 8V or 12V; draws current only for the brief strike duration

BS 7671 and Part P Compliance

Under Part P of the Building Regulations, any new consumer unit way (including a dedicated bell transformer circuit) constitutes notifiable work in England and Wales. The work must be notified to the local authority (either via a registered electrician under a competent person scheme, or via a building notice). Replacing or maintaining an existing bell transformer connected to an existing circuit is generally non-notifiable, provided no changes are made to the 230V wiring or overcurrent protection.

Under BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition):

  • Bell transformers must be double-wound (primary and secondary windings electrically isolated) — auto-transformers are not permitted
  • The ELV secondary circuit must be separated from 230V wiring by basic insulation at minimum; avoid routing bell wire alongside mains cables
  • Bell transformers installed in consumer units must be DIN rail mounted and compatible with the enclosure type

Wireless Doorbells: When to Use Them

Wireless doorbell systems — comprising a battery-powered transmitter at the door and a mains plug-in receiver indoors — are the simplest option for retrofit where running bell wire is impractical. No Part P notification is required. The main considerations:

  • Range: Most wireless systems work reliably up to 100–150m open-field, but solid masonry walls significantly reduce range; multi-floor buildings may require a second receiver
  • Battery life: Push button transmitters typically last 12–24 months on CR2032 or AA batteries; choose a model with a low-battery indicator
  • Interference: Operate on 433MHz or 868MHz bands; occasionally affected by other wireless devices; pairing to a specific receiver avoids triggering from neighbours' doorbells

For new-build work or major refurbishments, a wired system is strongly preferred for long-term reliability.
