Bathrooms are the most safety-critical room in any domestic electrical installation. BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) imposes strict zone restrictions on what electrical accessories can be installed and where, prohibiting standard switches inside the room and mandating IP-rated fittings in wet areas. Understanding bathroom zones, pull cord switching, fan isolation, and shaver socket requirements is fundamental to any bathroom rewire, new build, or refurbishment.

This guide covers the key electrical accessories specific to bathroom installations: pull cord switches for lighting and shower circuits, fan isolator switches for extract ventilation, and dual-voltage shaver sockets — including the relevant regulations, correct positioning, and product selection for UK electricians.

Bathroom Zone Classification — BS 7671 Section 701

Section 701 of BS 7671 divides the bathroom into zones that dictate the IP rating and type of equipment permitted:

  • Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower basin itself. Only SELV (Separated Extra-Low Voltage) equipment rated at least IPX7 is permitted — typically only recessed lights designed for submerged use.
  • Zone 1: Above the bath or shower tray, up to 2.25 m from the floor, and within the horizontal boundary of the bath or shower tray. Equipment must be rated at least IPX4 (IPX5 where water jets may be used). 230V luminaires to BS EN 60598 and SELV equipment are permitted. No socket outlets other than shaver supply units (to BS EN 61558-2-5) are permitted in Zone 1.
  • Zone 2: Outside Zone 1, extending 0.6 m horizontally from the bath or shower tray boundary, up to 2.25 m from the floor. IP44 minimum. Standard luminaires and fan isolator switches are permitted here. Still no standard socket outlets.
  • Outside the zones: Beyond Zone 2, standard fittings may be used provided they cannot be reached by a person using the bath or shower. Switches (other than pull cord types) must be positioned outside the bathroom entirely — i.e., on the outside of the door — unless they are pull cord operated from above.

The key practical point: no standard rocker switches are permitted inside a bathroom. Lighting and shower circuits within the room must be controlled by pull cord switches mounted at ceiling level (Zone 2, typically above the zone boundary), or by switches positioned outside the room. Fan isolator switches for extract fans are an exception — they must be sited within Zone 2 or outside the zones where they serve a Zone 1 or Zone 2 fan, but are classified as a permissible accessory under Regulation 701.512.3.

Pull Cord Switches — Lighting Circuits

A 10AX 2-way pull cord switch controls a lighting circuit from ceiling level. The pull cord hangs within reach, but the switch body is at the ceiling — outside Zone 1 and typically outside Zone 2 — making it the standard solution for bathroom lighting control.

Installation notes

  • Wire as a standard 2-way switch where a second switching point is needed (e.g., a switch outside the door on the wall, and a pull cord inside). Use 3-core and earth T&E for 2-way switching.
  • For single switching, wire as a 1-way switch — simply use the L1 and COM terminals.
  • The pull cord body is typically flush-mounted to a dry lining box or surface-mounted to a BESA box at ceiling level. Ensure the mounting box is rated for ceiling use.
  • Many pull cord switches include a neon indicator to show when the light is on — useful for confirming circuit status without entering the room.

Pull Cord Switches — Shower Circuits

A shower circuit requires a dedicated double-pole (DP) isolator switch rated at 45A, positioned where it can be operated safely — outside Zone 1 and typically at ceiling level within the bathroom. A 45A DP pull cord switch at ceiling level satisfies both requirements: it provides full double-pole isolation of the shower and is pull cord operated from within the bathroom without putting a manual switch within reach of wet hands.

Key features to specify

  • Double-pole isolation: Both line and neutral are broken simultaneously — required for shower circuits to provide safe isolation for maintenance and to meet Part P requirements.
  • 45A rating: Sized for electric shower loads up to 10.8kW at 240V. Many modern showers are 8.5kW–10.5kW, so 45A is the standard specification.
  • Mechanical on/off indicator: A mechanical indicator (not a neon — neons can fail) shows physically whether the switch is in the on or off position, allowing safe confirmation of isolation before working on the shower.
  • Neon indicator: A neon lamp in addition to the mechanical indicator gives visible confirmation when the circuit is energised.

The switch must be wired on the shower's dedicated circuit — typically a 6mm² or 10mm² twin and earth radial from a 40A or 45A MCB/RCBO in the consumer unit, depending on shower wattage and cable run length.

Fan Isolator Switches

Building Regulations Part F requires mechanical extract ventilation in bathrooms, with an intermittent extract rate of at least 15 l/s for bathrooms with a bath or shower. Most bathroom extract fans are wired from the lighting circuit so they run with the light and over-run for a set period after the light is switched off (controlled by an internal timer in the fan).

A three-pole fan isolator switch provides the means of isolation for the fan — required under BS 7671 Regulation 537.2 so that the fan can be safely isolated for maintenance or replacement without switching off the entire lighting circuit. Fan isolators are typically mounted adjacent to the fan, within Zone 2 or outside the zones, at a height above 0.6 m from the floor.

Wiring a fan isolator

A standard bathroom extract fan is wired using a 3-pole fan isolator:

  • L (Line in): Permanent live supply from the lighting circuit (unswitched, or switched — depending on whether the fan has its own timer).
  • N (Neutral in): Neutral from the circuit.
  • E (Earth): CPC (circuit protective conductor).
  • L (Line out), N (Neutral out), E (Earth): To the fan.

Where the fan is to be controlled by the light switch (live feed to fan via switched live), a 2-core and earth from the switch to the isolator is used, with a permanent live and neutral also available at the isolator for the over-run timer. Alternatively, some fans accept a single switched live and generate their own timer operation internally.

Fan isolators are a three-pole device — they break L, N, and E simultaneously — because bathroom fans are Class I appliances (metal-cased or with exposed conductive parts) where continuity of the protective conductor must be maintained, and because the three-pole design gives complete isolation.

Shaver Sockets — Dual Voltage Supply Units

The only socket outlet permitted within a bathroom zone (Zone 1 or Zone 2) is a shaver supply unit to BS EN 61558-2-5. These are not standard socket outlets — they incorporate an isolating transformer that provides separated extra-low voltage (SELV) at both 115V and 230V for electric shavers and electric toothbrushes. The isolating transformer breaks the galvanic connection to the mains supply, eliminating the risk of electric shock from contact with water.

Shaver sockets may be installed in Zone 2 and outside the zones. They must not be installed in Zone 0 or Zone 1. The 115V output is for older North American shavers; the 230V output (limited to very low current — typically 20VA) is for UK and European shavers. Standard UK plugs will not fit a shaver socket — the socket is specifically sized for shaver plugs only, preventing misuse with other appliances.

Installation notes

  • Shaver sockets are typically wired from the bathroom lighting circuit or a dedicated spur.
  • The transformer is built into the socket body — the unit is considerably deeper than a standard socket. A 47mm or 50mm back box is normally required; check the product data sheet before ordering back boxes.
  • Some shaver sockets incorporate an integral light (typically LED) above the shaving mirror — these combination units are convenient but require a separate lighting circuit connection.
  • The 20VA current limit means shaver sockets are not suitable for hair dryers, curling tongs, or other high-wattage bathroom appliances. A notice on the socket faceplate typically states this restriction.

Specifying a Bathroom Electrical Accessory Set

For a typical bathroom rewire or new fit-out, the standard accessory specification covers:

  1. 10AX 2-way pull cord switch at ceiling level for the main lighting circuit. Position centrally or above the main light fitting, ensuring the cord hangs clear of the shower enclosure.
  2. 45A DP pull cord switch at ceiling level above or adjacent to the shower — typically 300–500 mm above the shower head zone boundary. This is the shower isolation point and must be accessible for use and maintenance.
  3. Fan isolator switch adjacent to the extract fan, typically in the void above the ceiling if the fan is ceiling-mounted, or on the wall at high level outside Zone 1. Leave enough cable slack to pull the fan down for filter cleaning.
  4. Shaver socket at mirror height (typically 900–1100 mm above finished floor level), outside Zone 1 and outside Zone 2 wherever possible — i.e., at least 600 mm from the bath or shower tray boundary. Use a 47mm back box.

In en-suites with shower trays only (no bath), the zone dimensions apply from the shower tray boundary. In wet rooms, the entire floor area is typically treated as Zone 1 up to 2.25 m height, significantly restricting accessory placement. For wet rooms, all accessories should be positioned outside the room or in the lobby/dressing area wherever possible.

Part P Notification and EICR

Bathroom electrical work (new circuits, additional circuits, or consumer unit work) is notifiable under Building Regulations Part P in England. Electricians registered with a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, or similar) can self-certify their own work. Non-registered electricians must notify the local authority building control (LABC) before starting work, or use an approved inspector.

New shower circuits and bathroom rewires should be tested to BS 7671 and an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) issued. For work on existing circuits (e.g., replacing a fan isolator or shaver socket on an established circuit), a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) is appropriate.
