A blocked drain is one of the most common plumbing problems in UK homes and commercial premises. The majority of blockages are self-inflicted — the wrong materials flushed down toilets, fat and grease poured down kitchen sinks, or hair and soap accumulation in shower wastes. Understanding the cause of a blockage determines the correct clearing method, the equipment needed, and whether the job can be resolved by the occupant or requires a professional.

This guide covers the common causes of drain blockages by location, the methods available to clear them (from plunger to high-pressure water jetter), when to escalate to a drainage specialist, and the products that prevent recurrence.

How Drain Blockages Form

Most household drains operate at self-cleaning velocity when correctly sized and laid — the gradient and pipe diameter are sufficient to carry solids without adhesion under normal use. Blockages form when this equilibrium breaks down:

  • Accumulation: Grease, fat, hair, and soap film build up gradually on pipe walls, progressively reducing bore until flow stops. This is the most common mechanism — the drain works slowly for weeks before failing completely.
  • Obstruction: A single object (wet wipe, cotton bud, sanitary product, children's toy) lodges in the pipework and acts as a nucleus for further accumulation.
  • Root ingress: Tree and shrub roots exploit joints in clay or concrete drainage pipes, entering through hairline cracks and expanding to fill and eventually block the pipe bore.
  • Collapse or displacement: Older vitrified clay pipes can crack and collapse due to ground movement, vehicular loading, or frost. A displaced or collapsed section causes immediate partial or total blockage.
  • Scale and mineral deposit: In hard water areas, calcium carbonate deposits can accumulate on pipe walls (though this is rare in large-bore drainage compared to hot water systems).

Blockage Locations and Typical Causes

Kitchen Sink

The most common kitchen drain blockage is fat and grease solidification. Cooking fats poured down the drain in liquid form cool and solidify on the pipe walls within a metre or two of the sink. Over time, the solidified fat layer thickens until flow is restricted. Food debris, coffee grounds, and starchy materials (pasta, rice) compound the problem by embedding in the fat layer. Blockages typically occur in the P-trap or in the first 1–2 m of 40 mm waste pipe.

Bathroom Basin and Shower

Hair and soap scum are the overwhelming cause of bathroom blockages. Hair tangles around the cross-bar of the waste fitting or accumulates in the trap, combined with soap film into a dense mat that restricts and eventually blocks flow. These blockages are almost always within 300 mm of the waste fitting — in the trap itself or the bottle trap neck.

Bath

Similar to showers — hair and soap — but also often affected by poor fall on the waste pipe (insufficient gradient causing residual pooling and slime accumulation over years). Bath blockages sometimes occur at the bath trap (which has a long, curved shape) or at a 90° bend in the concealed waste run.

Toilet

Toilet blockages are usually caused by inappropriate materials: wet wipes (even those marketed as "flushable" do not break down like toilet paper), cotton wool, sanitary products, nappies, and excessive toilet paper. These lodge in the trap of the pan, in the short waste connection, or in the first bend of the underground drainage. Scale accumulation inside the trap of a toilet pan (a white or brown deposit ring) can also reduce bore enough to cause partial blockage in hard water areas.

Underground Drains

Underground drainage blockages (in the 100 mm or 150 mm pipes between inspection chambers) are more serious. Causes include root ingress, grease accumulation from kitchen waste over many years (forming fatberg-type blockages in combined sewer systems), debris entering through open or damaged inspection chamber covers, and collapsed or displaced pipe joints. These blockages may affect multiple appliances simultaneously and typically require rodding or jetting to clear.

Clearing Methods

Plunger

The correct tool for a straightforward basin, sink, or bath blockage where the trap is partially obstructed. A cup plunger creates alternating pressure and suction that dislodges soft blockages (hair, grease) from the trap. Cover the overflow with a cloth (to prevent pressure bypassing the blockage through the overflow channel) and plunge vigorously several times. For toilets, use a flanged (toilet) plunger with a rubber extension that seats inside the trap mouth — a cup plunger is ineffective on a toilet.

Drain Snake (Hand Auger)

A flexible coiled steel cable (typically 6–10 mm diameter, 3–15 m long) with a corkscrew or hook head. Feed the snake into the waste through the trap or access point, rotating the handle to drive it through bends and into the blockage. The snake either breaks up the blockage (soft accumulation) or hooks onto a solid object and allows it to be withdrawn. Hand augers handle most sink, bath, basin, and toilet blockages. For underground drainage they are replaced by rodding equipment.

Drain Rods

Rigid polypropylene rods (typically 1 m sections that screw together) with a choice of heads: plunger head (for pushing soft blockages), corkscrew head (for rotating into a blockage), or scraper head (for cutting through root masses). Used for underground drainage: access through an inspection chamber and rod toward the blockage. Always rotate rods clockwise only — anti-clockwise unscrews the rod sections inside the drain, leaving sections in the pipe.

High-Pressure Water Jetter

A motorised pump delivering water at 80–200 bar through a flexible hose with a specialist nozzle. The nozzle typically has forward jets for cutting and rear-facing jets that propel the hose forward into the drain while flushing debris back toward the access point. High-pressure jetting is the most effective clearing method for grease accumulation, root masses, and debris in underground drainage. It also cleans pipe walls rather than just clearing the immediate obstruction — reducing the likelihood of rapid recurrence.

For small-diameter household drains (40 mm waste pipes), domestic jetter units (electric, 80–100 bar) are available to hire or purchase. For 100 mm and larger underground drainage, professional jetting equipment (150–200 bar, petrol or diesel powered) is typically required.

Chemical Drain Cleaners

Alkaline (caustic soda / sodium hydroxide based) products dissolve hair, grease, and soap — the primary causes of bathroom and kitchen blockages. Products such as Buster Bathroom Plughole Unblocker, Mr Muscle Drain Gel, and own-brand caustic products are widely available.

Important limitations:

  • Chemical cleaners work on soft organic blockages only — they will not dissolve wet wipes, solid objects, or root masses
  • They require contact time (typically 15–30 minutes) and may need repeated applications on a thick grease blockage
  • Do not mix different chemical drain products — alkaline and acid-based cleaners produce violent reactions
  • Do not use in a completely blocked drain where the liquid will pool — the chemical cannot reach the blockage and will sit in the drain causing pipe damage
  • Caustic products can damage rubber seals in plastic traps over repeated use

Enzymatic drain maintainers (Buster Kitchen Plughole Unblocker Enzyme, Green Gobbler) are safer for regular use — bacterial cultures and enzymes digest organic material gradually rather than chemically dissolving it. These are more suitable for maintenance dosing than clearing an established blockage.

Drain Inspection Camera

For underground drainage or persistent blockages, a CCTV camera inspection confirms the cause (root ingress vs grease vs collapse) and the exact location before committing to clearing method. A 30 m self-levelling inspection camera (e.g. Ridgid SeeSnake, Rothenberger Roscope) can be hired from tool hire companies. Many drainage contractors carry camera equipment and will provide a CCTV report with footage and a clear diagnosis before pricing a repair.

Step-by-Step: Clearing a Blocked Kitchen Sink

  1. Remove and clean the sink strainer. Accumulated debris here alone may be causing slow drainage.
  2. Remove and clean the trap. Most plastic P-traps and bottle traps unscrew by hand. Put a bucket under the trap before loosening. Clear all debris from the trap interior and reinstall.
  3. If the blockage is not in the trap, use a drain snake to probe 1–2 m into the 40 mm waste pipe beyond the trap. Rotate to hook or break up any grease deposit.
  4. Flush with hot (not boiling — boiling water can soften plastic solvent-weld joints) water mixed with washing up liquid to melt residual grease.
  5. If flow is still slow, apply a caustic drain cleaner per the product instructions and allow the recommended contact time before flushing.
  6. If a repeated application does not clear the blockage, the problem is likely a more substantial grease deposit further along the run, requiring a drain snake or jetter.

When to Call a Drainage Specialist

Escalate to a professional drain clearing service when:

  • Multiple appliances are blocked simultaneously (indicating an underground drainage blockage downstream of where individual wastes join)
  • Water or sewage is backing up through a ground-floor inspection chamber or toilet
  • The blockage has not cleared after plunging, snaking, and chemical treatment
  • There is a smell of sewage inside the property without an apparent blockage (indicating a cracked or displaced underground pipe allowing gas ingress)
  • Outdoor inspection chambers are flooding or slow to empty after rainfall (indicating a blockage or collapse in the underground system)

Prevention

  • Kitchen: Never pour fat or oil down the drain. Collect in a container and dispose with general waste. Fit a sink strainer and empty it after every use. Dose with enzymatic cleaner monthly.
  • Bathroom: Fit hair catchers over shower and bath wastes (flat silicone designs are least obtrusive). Clean traps every 2–3 months. Avoid bath bomb products with large particulates that can accumulate in traps.
  • Toilet: Only flush the three Ps: pee, poo, and (toilet) paper. No wet wipes, no cotton wool, no sanitary products, regardless of packaging claims.
  • Underground: Keep vegetation away from drain runs; fit root barriers if trees are known to be near drainage. Inspect underground chambers annually for debris or standing water levels that indicate partial blockage.

Summary

Most household drain blockages are preventable and most are clearable with basic tools. The correct tool depends on the location and likely cause: plunger for traps, hand snake for waste pipe blockages, drain rods or jetter for underground drainage. Chemical cleaners are useful for soft organic blockages in accessible traps but are not a substitute for physical clearing in a fully blocked drain. Call a drainage specialist when multiple points are affected, when drainage camera investigation is needed to determine cause, or when the underground system shows signs of collapse or root damage.
