Boiler pressure problems are one of the most common call-outs for UK heating engineers. A sealed central heating system relies on maintaining the correct operating pressure — typically 1.0 to 1.5 bar cold, rising to 1.5 to 2.0 bar when the system is at operating temperature. Pressure that's too low causes boilers to lockout; pressure that's too high forces the pressure relief valve (PRV) to discharge. Understanding Sealed System Pressure
Unlike open-vented systems with a header tank in the loft, sealed (pressurised) central heating systems are closed loops. The system pressure is maintained by a combination of:
- Expansion vessel: A diaphragm vessel pre-charged with nitrogen (typically 1.0 bar) that absorbs the increase in water volume as the system heats up
- Filling loop: A temporary connection to the mains cold water supply, used to top up system pressure when needed
- Pressure relief valve (PRV): A safety valve set to open at 3.0 bar, discharging to a drain if pressure exceeds safe limits
- Pressure gauge: Typically a dial or digital gauge on the boiler, showing current system pressure
The correct cold-fill pressure depends on the height of the highest radiator above the boiler. As a rule of thumb, add 0.3 bar for every 3 metres of height, plus 0.5 bar as a minimum. Most domestic two-storey systems are set to 1.0–1.2 bar cold.
Low Boiler Pressure — Causes and Diagnosis
A boiler that drops below approximately 0.5–0.8 bar (varies by manufacturer) will lockout and display a low-pressure fault code. Common causes include:
Gradual Pressure Loss
Small amounts of air dissolve into heating water over time, and micro-leaks at fittings, valve packing glands, and radiator bleed valves are normal. A system that requires topping up once or twice per year is considered acceptable. If the system needs repressurising every few weeks, investigate further.
Radiator Bleeding
Every time a radiator is bled, air is released and pressure drops. After bleeding all radiators, repressurise the system to the correct cold-fill pressure.
System Leak
Inspect all visible pipework, radiator connections, valve bodies, and the boiler heat exchanger. Look for drip marks, corrosion staining, or damp patches in ceilings and floors above/below pipework runs. Common leak points include:
- Radiator bleed valve packing glands
- TRV valve bodies (internal diaphragm failure)
- Compression fittings that have worked loose
- Boiler plate heat exchanger (scaling damage on hard water areas)
- Pump shaft seal
Expansion Vessel Failure
When the expansion vessel diaphragm fails or the pre-charge pressure has dropped, the vessel can no longer absorb the expansion of heated water. The result is a characteristic pattern: correct pressure when cold, rising rapidly to 3.0 bar when hot (PRV discharges), then dropping below 1.0 bar as the system cools and contracts. This cycle repeats every time the boiler runs.
To test the expansion vessel, attach a tyre pressure gauge to the Schrader valve on the vessel with the system depressurised. A healthy vessel will show the pre-charge pressure (typically 1.0 bar). Repressurising a Sealed System
Most modern combi and system boilers have an integral or external filling loop. The procedure is straightforward:
- Ensure the boiler has cooled and is switched off
- Locate the filling loop — a flexible braided hose connecting the cold mains to the heating return (usually beneath the boiler)
- Open both isolation valves on the filling loop (quarter-turn valves, fully open)
- Watch the pressure gauge and allow the pressure to rise slowly to 1.0–1.5 bar
- Close both isolation valves
- Remove or isolate the filling loop as required by the boiler installation manual (some manufacturers require the loop to be disconnected to prevent backflow risk)
- Switch the boiler on and check the hot pressure does not exceed 2.5 bar
Important: Never repressurise a hot system. Water at 60–80°C expands significantly, and adding cold mains pressure on top of a hot system can cause the PRV to open immediately.
Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) — Inspection and Replacement
The PRV is a critical safety component and should not be bypassed or blanked off. Common PRV-related problems include:
PRV Weeping or Dripping
A small amount of discharge from the PRV tundish is normal when the system reaches operating pressure. Continuous dripping or discharge when the system is cold indicates:
- System pressure has been over-filled (pressure above 2.5–3.0 bar cold)
- Expansion vessel failure causing pressure spikes
- PRV seat fouled with limescale or debris (common in hard water areas)
- PRV nearing end of life (spring-loaded valves harden with age and temperature cycling)
Testing a PRV
Turn the test lever briefly to confirm the valve opens and reseats cleanly. A PRV that does not reseat after testing (continuous drip) must be replaced immediately — it is no longer able to perform its safety function.
Replacing a PRV
PRVs are typically 3/4" BSP male connections on combi boilers, or 1/2" BSP on smaller units. Replacement requires draining the system pressure first:
- Isolate the boiler and allow to cool
- Attach a hose to the drain-off cock (lowest point of the system) and open to reduce pressure to zero
- Remove the PRV (screwed connection with PTFE or compression olive)
- Fit new PRV with fresh PTFE tape — three to five turns on the male thread
- Repressurise and test
Always replace like-for-like on pressure rating — a domestic sealed system PRV must be rated at 3.0 bar. Do not substitute a 6.0 bar PRV from an unvented hot water cylinder.
High System Pressure — Causes and Fixes
Boiler pressure consistently above 2.5 bar when cold requires immediate investigation:
- Over-filled system: The filling loop valves were left open or the filling loop failed internally (mains pressure continuously feeding into the heating circuit). Check filling loop isolation — if valves are open and mains water is entering, close them and reduce pressure via the drain-off cock
- Filling loop internal leak: Even with external valves closed, a failed internal check valve in the filling loop can allow mains pressure to migrate into the heating circuit. Replace the filling loop
- Expansion vessel pre-charge too low or vessel waterlogged: See above — recharge or replace the vessel
Inhibitor and System Water Quality
Many pressure and boiler lockout problems are secondary effects of poor system water quality. Black sludge (magnetite) causes pump wear, heat exchanger scaling, and can block PRV seats. After any pressure system repair:
- Flush the system if sludge is present
- Dose with a quality inhibitor such as Fernox F1 or Sentinel X100
- Fit a magnetic system filter in the heating return to capture magnetite continuously
- Test inhibitor concentration with a test strip annually

When to Escalate to a Gas Safe Engineer
Pressure work on sealed systems is not notifiable under the Gas Safety Regulations in itself — any competent plumber can repressurise a system, replace an expansion vessel, or replace a PRV. However, if accessing or working on the boiler's internal gas components (heat exchanger, gas valve, ignition) a Gas Safe registered engineer is required by law. Similarly, unvented hot water cylinders (G3 appliances) require a qualified unvented engineer for cylinder work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
The most common causes are: micro-leaks in the system (check all fittings, valves, and radiator connections), a failed expansion vessel diaphragm (characteristic pattern of correct cold pressure but rapid rise to PRV discharge when hot), or the PRV itself weeping and discharging small amounts of water continuously. A system that needs topping up more than twice per year warrants a full investigation.
Can I repressurise the boiler myself?
Yes — repressurising a sealed system via the filling loop is a standard householder task and does not require Gas Safe registration. The boiler manufacturer's manual will show the filling loop location and the target pressure. However, if the boiler is faulting, losing pressure repeatedly, or you are unsure of the cause, contact a heating engineer.
What pressure should my boiler show?
Cold (system off or just switched on): 1.0–1.5 bar. Hot (system running at operating temperature): 1.5–2.0 bar, not exceeding 2.5 bar. If the pressure drops below ~0.8 bar the boiler will lockout. If it rises above 3.0 bar the PRV will open.
How often should I replace the PRV?
There is no fixed replacement interval, but PRVs should be tested annually (lift the test lever briefly). Replace immediately if: the valve weeps continuously, it fails to reseat after testing, or the system is more than 10–15 years old and the valve has never been changed. PRVs are inexpensive relative to the safety they provide.
Is expansion vessel replacement a DIY job?
Replacing an external expansion vessel (fitted on the heating pipework, not inside the boiler) is within the competency of a plumber and does not require Gas Safe registration unless boiler internals are disturbed. Replacing a vessel inside the boiler casing typically requires partial disassembly of the boiler and should be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer if gas components could be disturbed.
