The right central-heating control depends on what the system must switch, how occupants want to schedule it, and which control interface the boiler supports. Choose by control duty, not appearance

Start by identifying the existing system and its wiring. A control may need to switch one heating zone, combine time and temperature control, communicate digitally with a boiler, or control heating and stored hot water as two independent channels. Confirm the boiler and system manufacturer's instructions before purchase; an industry-standard backplate or voltage-free contact does not by itself prove that every wiring terminal or appliance is compatible.

On/off, TPI and OpenTherm explained

Mechanical on/off control

A mechanical thermostat calls for heat when room temperature falls below its set point and stops the demand when temperature rises. It is easy to understand and needs no batteries, but the ESI ESRTM is a temperature controller rather than a programmable timer.

TPI control

Time Proportional and Integral control manages heat demand in repeated cycles as the room approaches its target. Both the ESI digital model and ESRTP4+ list TPI. Correct settings for the heat source and system remain important; do not assume one cycle configuration suits every boiler or heat pump.

OpenTherm communication

The ESRTP4+ supports OpenTherm, which can allow a compatible boiler and thermostat to exchange demand information rather than relying only on a simple switched call for heat. OpenTherm must be supported at both ends. Never connect an OpenTherm terminal on the assumption that it is interchangeable with a mains-voltage thermostat connection.

Programmer, thermostat or dual-channel control?

A room thermostat controls temperature. A programmer controls operating times. A programmable room thermostat combines those functions for a heating zone. Where a system has stored domestic hot water, a dual-channel unit such as the Drayton RF902 can schedule heating and hot water independently. That does not mean it is the right replacement for every two-channel programmer: check valves, cylinder thermostat, wiring centre, receiver location and appliance controls as a complete system.

TRVs and zoning

Thermostatic radiator valves provide room-by-room adjustment by regulating flow through individual radiators; they are not a substitute for the main control that interlocks with the heat source. Locate the main room thermostat where it can sense representative room temperature, away from direct sun, draughts and local heat sources. Avoid creating a situation where a nearby TRV routinely closes before the room thermostat can satisfy demand. System zoning and bypass arrangements should follow the current design, appliance instructions and applicable Building Regulations guidance.

Installation and commissioning checks

  • Identify the heat source, system plan, controlled loads and existing conductor functions; never rely on wire colour alone.
  • Confirm supply voltage, switching type, relay rating and whether a neutral is required.
  • Isolate the electrical supply, prove dead and follow the product and boiler wiring diagrams.
  • For wireless controls, choose receiver and thermostat positions that provide a reliable RF path, then bind and test them as instructed.
  • Set the correct time, schedule, target temperatures and any heat-source-specific control parameters.
  • Test heating and, where applicable, hot-water demands independently. Confirm valves move, the boiler responds and demand ends correctly.
  • Explain overrides, frost/holiday functions and normal user settings, and leave instructions with the customer.

Professional installation: heating controls can involve 230 V wiring and interfaces that can damage a boiler if connected incorrectly. Electrical work should be carried out by a competent person in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and applicable regulations. Work on a gas appliance itself must be undertaken only by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. For heat pumps or unfamiliar proprietary controls, use an installer competent in that specific system.
