Why Cable Fixing Matters on Every Electrical Installation

Cable clips and cable ties are everyday consumables, but selection still needs care. BS 7671 Section 522.8 requires wiring systems to be installed so foreseeable mechanical stresses do not damage cables or place appreciable strain on conductor terminations. It does not set one universal clip interval for every cable and fixing method. Support type and spacing must suit the cable construction, route, surface, orientation, environment and the cable or support manufacturer's instructions.

That distinction matters on site. A conductor size such as 1.5mm² or 6mm² is its cross-sectional area; it is not the cable's outside width or diameter. Two cables with the same conductor area can have different overall dimensions because their insulation, sheath, armour and core arrangement differ. Measure the cable or use the manufacturer's dimensional data before selecting a clip.

Choose Cable Clips by Cable Profile and Outside Dimensions

Start with the cable profile. Flat twin-and-earth needs a clip whose internal width and height suit the complete sheath. Round cable needs a round clip matched to the cable's overall diameter. Never assume a clip marked “6mm” is suitable for a 6mm² conductor: those figures describe different measurements.

The clip should hold the cable securely without crushing, pinching or cutting its sheath. Confirm that the fixing is suitable for the substrate and environment, and follow the cable and clip manufacturers' support guidance. Where a wiring system needs fire-resistant support, containment or protection from impact, use a fixing system designed for that duty rather than treating a general-purpose plastic clip or tie as the complete solution.

CED Twin-and-Earth Cable Clips — 1mm and 1.5mm Grey

The CED Cable Clips Twin/Earth 1mm Grey and CED Cable Clips Twin/Earth 1.5mm Grey are flat-profile clips intended for corresponding twin-and-earth sizes. Before use, compare the actual cable sheath dimensions with the clip and check the manufacturer's compatibility information. Cable dimensions can vary between manufacturers and constructions even when the nominal conductor area is the same.

Fit each clip square to the route so the cable sits naturally rather than being pulled sideways into the clip. Choose a nail or fixing method appropriate to the substrate, and do not drive the clip hard enough to deform the sheath. At bends and entries, support the cable so its bend radius is maintained and the termination does not carry the weight of the run.

  • Use: flat twin-and-earth cable only where the complete cable dimensions fit the clip.
  • Check: cable manufacturer's dimensions, clip compatibility and substrate fixing.
  • Avoid: forcing a larger cable into a smaller clip or using a loose clip that does not restrain the route.

CED 4mm White and Olympic 10mm Black Round Cable Clips

The CED 4mm Round Cable Clip White and Olympic 10mm Cable Clip Black 100pcs provide two round-profile options. The nominal clip size should be checked against the outside diameter of the exact cable—not its conductor cross-sectional area.

This is particularly important with SWA, coaxial and data cable. Their outside diameters depend on construction and manufacturer. A 6mm² SWA cable, for example, is not a 6mm-diameter cable and must not be assigned a clip on that assumption. Use the cable datasheet or measure the undamaged cable, then choose a compatible support approved for the route and loading.

For exposed, outdoor or demanding routes, also verify the support material, corrosion resistance, UV suitability and fixing method from the manufacturer's documentation. Colour alone does not prove outdoor suitability. Clips provide local restraint; they do not replace the correct gland, cleat, containment or strain relief where the cable system requires it.

  • 4mm clip: check against the cable's measured or published outside diameter.
  • 10mm clip: check against the cable's measured or published outside diameter.
  • SWA: use the cable manufacturer's outside diameter and support recommendations for the exact type and core count.

Select by the bundle circumference and the documented product rating rather than estimating load from tie width or colour.

Cable ties should be snug, not overtightened. A tie that deforms insulation or forces cables into an unsuitable bend can create a poor installation. Cut tails cleanly and position the head so it does not leave an avoidable sharp edge in a working area. Keep identification and future maintenance in mind when grouping circuits.

Do not infer tensile strength, UV resistance, temperature range or service life unless the exact product documentation states it. For outdoor use, load-bearing support, high temperatures or duties where premature collapse must be prevented, confirm a suitable rated product and support system. A general cable tie used for dressing a bundle is not automatically an acceptable structural cable support.

Cable Support Selection — Mobile-Safe Site Checklist

BS 7671 does not prescribe the former 250/400/550mm spacing figures in a universal cable-clip table. Use the following checks instead of a universal interval table:

1. Identify the complete cable

Record cable type, construction, core count and the manufacturer's overall width or diameter. Conductor area alone is not enough.

2. Check the route and environment

Consider orientation, bends, terminations, substrate, moisture, sunlight, temperature, impact risk and any fire-support requirement.

3. Follow documented support guidance

Use the cable or support manufacturer's instructions and the project specification to set fixing type and spacing for the actual installation.

4. Inspect the finished run

Confirm the cable is secure, the sheath is undamaged, bends are suitable and no appreciable mechanical strain reaches the terminations.

An EICR classification is based on the observed condition and the danger it presents; a distance from a termination does not by itself create an automatic C2 code. Record and assess the actual defect rather than relying on an invented universal distance rule.

Cable Trunking and Conduit as Alternatives to Individual Clips

Containment can be a neater option where several cables share an exposed route, but it must also be selected, sized, supported and installed for the application. BS EN 60423 concerns conduit outside diameters and conduit/fitting threads; it is not a source for cable-clip spacing intervals.

Before choosing containment, check cable capacity, bend space, segregation, environmental conditions and the fixing surface. The containment supports the route only when the complete system is installed to its manufacturer's instructions and the relevant design requirements.
