Central Heating Pump Replacement Guide: Grundfos, Stuart Turner and How to Size It Right

A central heating pump is one of those components that runs every day, rarely gets noticed, and then causes chaos when it fails. Water hammer, cold radiators, a boiler that short-cycles — most of the time the circulating pump is the culprit. This guide covers how to diagnose a failed pump, how to size the replacement correctly, and which pumps to specify for domestic and light commercial work. All the models covered are available for same-day collection from APM Electricals in Acton, West London.

Is It Actually the Pump?

Before you replace anything, confirm the pump is the problem. The most common symptoms of a failed or failing circulator are:

  • Cold radiators throughout the house — particularly on upper floors — while the boiler fires and the pipes at the boiler are hot. The pump is not moving water around the circuit.
  • Noisy operation — grinding, humming or rattling from the pump body. Bearing wear or air in the pump.
  • The pump body is cold — a working pump will be warm to the touch. A cold body with the system calling for heat suggests the pump has seized or failed electrically.
  • Pump runs but no flow — check the isolation valves are open and there is no sludge blockage. A magnetic filter that has not been serviced can restrict flow enough to mimic pump failure.

Check the pump head is drawing power with a multimeter before pulling it out. A seized pump can sometimes be freed by removing the front cap and turning the shaft manually with a flat-blade screwdriver — worth trying on an older pump before condemning it.

Understanding Pump Specifications: Head and Flow Rate

Central heating pumps are rated by two parameters: head (in metres) and flow rate (in litres per minute or cubic metres per hour). Head is the measure of resistance the pump can overcome — think of it as the pump's ability to push water through a long or complex pipe circuit. Flow rate is the volume of water moved per unit of time.

The most common domestic sizing is a 25mm (1 inch) flanged pump with a 3-speed selector. For a typical UK semi-detached or terraced house with a conventional boiler system, a pump rated at 25/60 (25mm flange, 6 metre head) will cover most installations. Larger houses, underfloor heating circuits, or systems with multiple zones will need a higher-head pump or a variable-speed electronic model.

Modern variable-speed pumps (also called A-rated or ECi pumps) automatically adjust their speed to match system demand. They use significantly less electricity than fixed-speed models — a relevant consideration given energy costs — and they tend to be quieter under part-load conditions.

Grundfos Pumps: The Industry Standard

Grundfos is the default choice for most heating engineers. Their pumps are well-documented, parts are available, and they have a solid track record across decades of installations. The two models we stock that cover the majority of domestic work are:

Grundfos UPS3 15-50/65 Circulating Pump — this is the direct replacement for the long-running UPS2 series that has been installed in UK homes since the 1990s. The UPS3 is a 3-speed pump with 130mm centre-to-centre flange spacing, 5 metre head, and a built-in run capacitor. Straightforward to install, compact, and reliable. Suitable for most standard S-plan and Y-plan domestic systems.

Grundfos UPM3 Auto 15-70 — the UPM3 is Grundfos's variable-speed domestic pump and an upgrade from the fixed-speed UPS3 for new installations or where energy efficiency matters. It uses permanent magnet motor technology, consumes as little as 3W at minimum speed, and automatically adjusts to the system's requirements. For a typical domestic system, the UPM3 will pay for the additional cost in electricity savings within a few heating seasons.

Stuart Turner: Built for UK Installations

Stuart Turner is a British manufacturer and their pumps are specified widely across UK social housing and local authority contracts for their long service life and straightforward serviceability.

The Stuart Turner Pulse Trade 25/60-130 is a 3-speed pump with a 130mm flange, designed for standard domestic open-vented and sealed central heating systems. The Pulse Trade range is positioned as a direct like-for-like replacement for the most common pump sizes. Wiring terminals are clearly labelled and the body design makes bleeding straightforward.

Pump Replacement: What to Check Before You Start

When replacing a pump, take note of the following before ordering:

  1. Flange centre-to-centre distance — 130mm is the UK standard for domestic pumps. Confirm before ordering. Some older installations have 110mm or 180mm flanges.
  2. Pipe orientation — pumps can be installed with the motor head in any orientation (horizontal, vertical, or angled), but confirm the replacement model supports the installed position.
  3. Isolation valves — if there are no serviceable isolation valves either side of the pump, fit them while you are doing the job. It will save time on every future service.
  4. System condition — a pump replacement is an ideal time to check inhibitor levels and inspect the system filter. A dirty or sludged system will kill a new pump quickly.

Do Not Skip the Filter

Sludge and scale are the primary causes of premature pump failure. Black iron oxide sludge accumulates in heating systems over time and will wear pump bearings and impellers. If the system does not have a magnetic filter fitted, fit one when you replace the pump. We stock the Calmag 22mm Central Heating Filter which catches magnetic and non-magnetic debris and is straightforward to service annually.
