Why Condensing Boilers Produce Condensate

When Do You Need a Condensate Pump?
A condensate pump is needed when:
- The boiler is below the drain level — gravity drainage is impossible, and a pumped route is the only option
- The boiler is distant from a suitable drain — gravity drainage would require a long horizontal run that isn't practical within the structure
- An external condensate pipe would freeze — while insulating the external pipe is the primary recommendation, in exposed locations a pump routing to an internal waste point eliminates freeze risk
- Retrofit situations with difficult access — where breaking into floors or chasing walls for gravity drainage would be cost-prohibitive
Condensate pumps are not a shortcut to avoid good drainage practice — BS 6798 and most boiler manufacturers' instructions specify gravity drainage as the first preference. But when gravity drainage genuinely isn't viable, a properly sized pump is a clean, compliant solution.

Maximum Lift Height
This is the vertical height the pump can push condensate upward. Most mini condensate pumps achieve 5–8m maximum lift. In practice, you need to account for pipe friction losses, bends, and horizontal runs: a horizontal run of 1m is roughly equivalent to 0.1–0.2m of head loss. Always size with headroom — if you're pumping 3m vertically with 4m of horizontal pipe, choose a pump rated for at least 5m head.
Flow Rate
Condensate volume is low — typically 1–3 L/hr from a domestic boiler. However, commercial multi-boiler installations or combined boiler/AC setups can produce significantly more. Check the pump's rated flow at your actual working head, not just the maximum head figure.
Noise Level
Condensate pumps cycle on and off whenever condensate accumulates to trigger level. Installation Notes
Pipe sizing: Most manufacturers specify 10mm or 12mm OD tube from pump to drain. Avoid using smaller tubing — increased friction losses reduce effective head and increase pump cycling frequency.
Non-return valve: Install a non-return valve on the discharge pipe if there is any risk of back-siphon from the drain into the pump. Some pumps include an integrated non-return valve; check before adding a separate one.
