Copper Pipe Bending: Hand Benders, Pipe Springs, and Machine Bending for Plumbers

Bending copper tube can reduce the number of fittings and joints in a run, helping create neat, swept changes of direction. For small-bore work, the Am-Tech 3 In 1 Pipe Bender gives plumbers, engineers, metalworkers and workshop users one straightforward hand tool for three tube sizes.

What this bender is designed to do

The three forming channels let you match the tool to 6, 8 or 10 mm tube. Its guided former supports the tube through the bend, making it easier to achieve a controlled curve than bending unsupported tube by hand. The 0–180° range covers anything from a slight offset to a return bend, subject to the space and routing requirements of the job.

Important: this is a small-bore bender. Do not assume it is suitable for common 15 or 22 mm plumbing tube, hard-drawn copper, or any material outside the verified specification above. Use a correctly sized tool and follow the tube manufacturer’s guidance for other tube types.

Why bend copper tube instead of adding an elbow?

  • Fewer joints: a bend can remove the need for an extra fitting and its associated joint.
  • Neater routing: a smooth bend can look cleaner on visible pipework and help a run follow the available space.
  • Swept change of direction: a formed curve is generally less abrupt than a tight elbow.
  • Efficient installation: once marked correctly, a bend can be quicker than cutting, preparing and joining several short pieces.

Fittings still make sense where access is too restricted to operate the handles, the required geometry cannot be produced cleanly, or the tube is not compatible with the tool.

How to make a clean bend

  1. Confirm the tube. Check that it is 6, 8 or 10 mm soft coil copper tube to EN 1057 R220 and inspect it for dents, flattening or damage.
  2. Plan and measure. Establish the required route and bend angle. Allow for the bend rather than measuring as though the pipe will turn at one sharp point.
  3. Mark the bend. Use a fine, visible mark at the intended bend position. For repeated pieces, make a trial bend from spare tube and use it to confirm your set-out before cutting finished lengths.
  4. Select the matching channel. Place the tube only in the former marked for its outside diameter. A mismatched channel can allow the tube to distort.
  5. Seat the tube fully. Keep it straight in the groove and secure it in accordance with the tool’s operating arrangement before applying force.
  6. Bend smoothly. Close the handles with steady, controlled pressure. Use the tool’s angle markings as a guide, accounting for a small amount of spring-back in the copper.
  7. Inspect the result. Release the tool carefully and check the bend for kinks, cracks, excessive flattening or wrinkling. Reject and replace damaged tube rather than trying to hide a defect.

Practical tips for accurate results

  • Practise on an offcut when the final position is critical.
  • Keep bends away from damaged sections and avoid repeatedly bending and straightening the same area.
  • For two bends in different planes, mark a reference line along the tube so the second bend stays correctly aligned.
  • Measure from a consistent reference point and check orientation before every pull; a correct bend facing the wrong way still wastes tube.
  • Never force oversized or unsuitable tube into the former.

Safety when bending copper tube

Wear suitable eye protection and work gloves, keep fingers clear of the handles and forming mechanism, and maintain stable footing. Copper ends can be sharp, so cut squarely and deburr them before handling or connecting the tube. Inspect the bender before use and do not use it if the handles, former or retaining parts are damaged. Do not extend the handles or strike the tool to gain leverage. Isolate, drain and make safe any existing service before altering pipework; use an appropriately competent tradesperson where the installation or service demands it.
