Garden and Driveway Drainage — Channel Drains, ACO Drains, and Surface Water Management for UK Plumbers

Effective surface water management is a legal requirement under Building Regulations Approved Document H and a practical necessity for preventing waterlogging, flooding, and structural damage. Whether you're installing a new driveway, landscaping a garden, or dealing with a flooded patio, understanding the range of drainage channels, gullies, and surface water management options is essential for UK plumbers and drainage contractors.

Why Surface Water Drainage Matters

UK planning policy requires that surface water run-off from new developments or significant hardstanding does not increase flood risk to the site or neighbouring properties. Building Regulations Part H specifically covers foul and surface water drainage, requiring that surface water is managed sustainably. The SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) framework encourages infiltration, attenuation, and slow release rather than direct discharge to public sewers, which are often operating at capacity.

Practically, poor surface water drainage causes:

  • Damp ingress — water pooling against walls can penetrate through masonry or breach DPCs
  • Driveway erosion and frost damage — standing water freezing in sub-base material degrades surfaces
  • Flooding — blocked or undersized drainage causes water to back up into gardens, garages, and living spaces
  • Sewer surcharge — excessive surface water entering combined sewers increases risk of foul water overflow

Channel Drains: Types and Selection

Channel drains (also called trench drains or drainage channels) are elongated linear collection points that run along paths, driveways, and patios to intercept surface water before it causes problems.

ACO Drains

ACO is a brand name so commonly used it has become generic in the trade. ACO drains consist of a polymer concrete or HDPE channel body with a removable grating on top. They are the workhorse of domestic and light commercial drainage:

  • ACO Brickslot — narrow slot grating (20–30mm) for use in block paving, invisible from above
  • ACO Multiline — standard recessed grating suitable for block paving, gravel, or concrete
  • ACO HexDrain — heavy duty black polypropylene channel for domestic driveways, Class A15 or B125 loading
  • ACO RainDrain — modular system with multiple grating options (galvanised, stainless steel, cast iron)

Standard Polymer Concrete Channels

Non-branded equivalents to ACO are available from manufacturers including Clark Drain, NDS, and Polydrain. These use polymer concrete channel bodies (glass-reinforced for strength) with standard-width gratings in various materials:

  • Galvanised steel — economical, suitable for foot traffic areas, susceptible to corrosion in coastal or chemical environments
  • Ductile iron — heavy duty, rated to D400 or E600 loading for heavy vehicle use
  • Stainless steel — premium, corrosion-resistant, suitable for pool surrounds and food-handling areas
  • Polypropylene slot grating — lightweight, chemical resistant, hygienic

Load Classes (EN 1433)

Channel drains must be specified to the correct load class for their application:

  • A15 — pedestrian and cycle areas only (15 kN)
  • B125 — domestic driveways, car parks (125 kN)
  • C250 — areas with slow moving vehicles (250 kN)
  • D400 — public roads and carriageways (400 kN)
  • E600 — industrial hardstanding, docks (600 kN)

Most domestic driveway installations require at least Class B125. Specify D400 if any HGVs or heavy plant might cross the area.

Point Drainage: Gullies and Gulley Pots

Where linear channel drainage isn't practical, point drainage using traditional gullies collects surface water at low points and discharges it to underground drainage. Gullies should be incorporated at:

  • Low points in paved areas
  • Foot of downpipes discharging to surface
  • Base of ramps and sloped hardstanding
  • Boundary between hardstanding and soft landscaping

Trapped Gullies

All surface water gullies connected to the foul or combined sewer network must be trapped to prevent sewer gases entering the open air. A 75mm water seal depth is standard (deeper than domestic trap depth) to prevent drying out during drought periods. Bottle gullies, square-to-round transition gullies, and back-inlet gullies for downpipe connections are all available in 100mm and 150mm outlet sizes to suit the drainage run.

Untrapped Gullies (Soakaways and Storm)

Where surface water discharges directly to a soakaway or dedicated surface water sewer (with no connection to the foul system), an untrapped gully is acceptable. These have no water seal but may include a silt bucket to collect debris before it enters the drainage run.

SUDS Techniques for Domestic Installations

Planning policy in England increasingly requires Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) rather than direct connection of surface water to public sewers. For domestic gardens and driveways, the main options are:

Soakaways

A soakaway is an excavated pit filled with rubble, granular material, or purpose-built plastic crates (such as Aquacell or Atlantis) that allows water to percolate slowly into the surrounding ground. Building Regulations Part H Section 2 gives guidance on soakaway design:

  • Minimum 5m from any building
  • Minimum 2.5m from boundaries (local authority guidance may vary)
  • Site ground conditions must support infiltration (a percolation test to BRE Digest 365 is required)
  • Volume sized for a 1-in-10-year storm event (or 1-in-100-year in areas at flood risk)

Permeable and Porous Paving

Permeable block paving (PBP) and porous asphalt allow surface water to pass through the surface layer into a sub-base that acts as temporary storage before percolating to ground or being discharged at a controlled rate. This is the planning default for front garden driveways: under the Town and Country Planning Act, converting a front garden to a non-permeable hard surface requires planning permission if greater than 5m², but permeable surfaces are exempt.

Rainwater Harvesting

Attenuation tanks with controlled outlet valves can capture roof runoff for irrigation, WC flushing, or vehicle washing, reducing both run-off volume and potable water consumption. Sizing is typically 1,000–3,000L for a domestic property. These require a mains back-up inlet (through an RPZ valve or equivalent air-gap device to prevent backflow) and a controlled outlet to soakaway or surface water sewer.

Installation: Channel Drain in Block Paving

A correctly installed channel drain in a block-paved driveway follows this sequence:

  1. Set out the channel position — typically at the base of a fall, across the full width of the driveway before a kerb or road junction. Use string lines to establish level.
  2. Excavate the trench — depth to accommodate the channel body, a 150mm concrete bed, and the correct invert level to drain by gravity to the gully or soakaway.
  3. Prepare the concrete bed — lay C20 concrete, screed to level, and set the channel sections with full contact and even falls to the outlet. Minimum 1:100 fall within the channel is recommended.
  4. Connect the outlet — the channel end cap should transition to 110mm socketed PVC pipe connecting to the drain run. Confirm the connection is watertight and the invert level allows gravity drainage.
  5. Haunch the channel — once the channel is set, haunch with C20 concrete on both sides to prevent lateral movement when loaded.
  6. Reinstate block paving — blocks are cut to fit against the channel sides. Blocks should be tight-set to the channel grating frame for a flush finish.
  7. Compact and joint — plate-compact the surrounding blocks and brush kiln-dried sand into joints. Do not compact immediately over the channel concrete until it has cured.

Rodding and Maintenance Access

Any linear drainage system longer than 5–6 metres should incorporate a rodding point or inspection chamber at changes of direction or at intervals to allow clearance of blockages. Channel drains with removable gratings are inherently accessible, but the underground connection to the drainage run needs provision for rodding. Fit 100mm rodding eyes with screw caps at changes of direction or every 25m on straight runs.

Driveway and Patio Design Considerations

The design of the hardstanding itself determines how effectively drainage channels work:

  • Falls to channels, not walls — minimum 1:80 fall away from the building and towards the drainage channel. Steeper than 1:30 creates a slip hazard.
  • Block paving sub-base depth — for driveways to BS 7533, the sub-base is typically 150mm Type 1 MOT under a 50mm sharp sand bed. Insufficient sub-base causes settlement and cracking around channels.
  • Edge restraints — block paving requires adequate edge restraint (kerb, edging, or haunched blocks) to prevent lateral spreading, which causes channels to be displaced.

Regulations and Approvals

  • Building Regulations Part H — covers foul and surface water drainage design and installation
  • Planning permission — non-permeable front garden surfacing exceeding 5m² requires permission under TCPA 1990 Schedule 2
  • Permitted Development — rear garden drainage works typically do not require planning permission
  • Water company approval — connection to the public sewer requires approval from the water company (Section 106 application in England and Wales). Most surface water connections require a controlled connection rate.
  • Building Notice or Full Plans — new drainage runs connecting to public sewers require Building Regulations approval, typically via a Building Notice for domestic works or Full Plans submission for commercial.

Can I connect surface water to the foul sewer?

In England and Wales, it is illegal to connect surface water to the foul sewer for new connections or alterations. Existing combined connections may be permitted under transitional arrangements, but the general principle is separate systems. Contact the local water company if in doubt.

How deep should the channel drain be?

The channel invert level must be deep enough to allow gravity discharge to the outfall. This depends on the site gradient and the outlet invert.
