A toilet bidet—also called a bidet spray, douche spray, shattaf or hygiene spray—uses a controlled stream of clean water for personal cleansing after using the toilet. It can be fitted beside a WC, built into a separate bidet, or carried as a rechargeable portable unit.

For many households, water cleansing feels fresher and more comfortable than relying on dry toilet paper alone. It can also reduce repeated wiping and the amount of toilet paper sent into the drainage system. The result depends on choosing the right product, using it correctly and installing fixed equipment in line with UK water regulations.

What are the benefits of a toilet bidet?

Water provides direct cleansing

A controlled rinse helps remove residue directly rather than moving it around with dry paper. Many users find this leaves them feeling cleaner and fresher after using the toilet.

Less rubbing against sensitive skin

Dry wiping can involve repeated friction. A gentle water spray may reduce the amount of wiping required, which can feel more comfortable for sensitive skin. Pressure should always be kept comfortable; a powerful jet is neither necessary nor advisable.

Useful for different mobility needs

A conveniently positioned handset can make personal washing easier for some older people, pregnant users and people with restricted reach or mobility. Individual circumstances differ, so anyone with a medical condition, recent surgery or specialist care requirement should follow advice from their healthcare professional.

Reduced dependence on toilet paper

A bidet does not necessarily eliminate toilet paper—many people still use a small amount for drying—but it can substantially reduce how much is needed for cleansing.

How hygienic is a bidet spray?

A correctly installed, regularly cleaned bidet supplied with clean water can be a hygienic method of personal cleansing. It is important not to describe any bidet as self-sterilising or as protection against infection: the cleanliness of the handset, nozzle, water supply and the user’s technique all matter.

• Use a gentle flow: begin at low pressure and increase only to a comfortable level.
• Avoid contact: do not allow the nozzle to touch the body or the inside of the toilet pan.
• Clean in the right direction: where relevant, cleanse from front to back to reduce transfer of bacteria.
• Clean the equipment: wipe and disinfect the spray head and holder according to the product manufacturer’s instructions.
• Dry gently: pat dry with a small amount of toilet tissue or a clean personal towel; do not share personal drying towels.
• Isolate after use: close the dedicated valve or shut-off when the spray is not being used, rather than leaving the hose and trigger under continuous pressure.
• Wash your hands: water cleansing does not replace proper handwashing with soap and water.

Toilet paper, blockages and recycling

Standard toilet tissue is manufactured to break down in water, so it is safer to flush than wipes, paper towels or ordinary tissues. That does not mean unlimited quantities are harmless. A large wad of toilet paper flushed at once can contribute to a blockage, particularly where a WC has a weak flush or the drain is narrow, scaled, damaged or already partially obstructed. Wet wipes—including many labelled “flushable”—and kitchen roll break down much more slowly and should not be flushed.

Used toilet paper is also not suitable for normal household recycling because it is contaminated. Tissue products are made with very short paper fibres; the North London Waste Authority explains that these fibres are generally too short to be useful for recycling into another product. The clean cardboard tube can normally be recycled, but the used tissue cannot. Reducing toilet-paper use with water cleansing can therefore reduce paper consumption and the volume entering the drainage system, without making exaggerated “zero waste” claims.

A thermostatic valve helps control mixed-water temperature and a dedicated shut-off allows the supply to be isolated after use. These are worthwhile safety and maintenance features, but they do not remove the need for compliant backflow protection.
