Diagnosing the Problem: Float Valve or Siphon?

The first step is to identify which component is causing the issue. Remove the cistern lid and observe:

• Toilet runs continuously or water trickles into the bowl: The float valve is letting in too much water, causing it to overflow into the overflow pipe or down the flush valve. The float arm may be set too high, the diaphragm may be worn, or the valve seat may be damaged. Replace the float valve.
• Cistern fills slowly or not at all: The float valve inlet may be partially blocked by limescale or debris. Clean or replace the valve. Also check that the isolation valve on the supply pipe is fully open.
• Toilet won't flush or flush is weak: The siphon diaphragm is split or perished. This is confirmed if pulling the handle produces little or no flushing action. Replace the siphon.
• Handle pulls up but won't flush: The siphon lifter or link is broken. Often the C-link connecting the handle to the siphon plunger has snapped — check before replacing the whole siphon.
• Flush takes a long time to refill, or valve sticks: Limescale is the most likely cause in hard water areas. Treat with Faren F200 descaler and clean valve internals.

Float Valve Types: Side Inlet vs Bottom Inlet

UK cisterns use one of two float valve configurations:

Side-Inlet Float Valves (Traditional)

Found in older high-level, low-level, and some close-coupled cisterns. The 1/2" supply pipe enters through the side wall of the cistern. A horizontal ball float arm rises with the water level and shuts off the valve when the correct level is reached.

The Peerless 1/2" Brass Tail Plastic Float Valve (BS 1212 Part 1) has an adjustable arm of 7"–10", making it compatible with a wide range of cistern depths. The brass tail connects to the 1/2" side-entry supply. This type is the classic UK float valve and is the easiest to service — you can replace the diaphragm washer without removing the whole valve.

Bottom-Inlet Float Valves (Modern)

Modern close-coupled cisterns typically use a bottom-inlet float valve where the supply pipe comes up through the base of the cistern. This design reduces operating noise significantly (no water dropping from height) and is now standard on WaterMark and WRAS-approved fittings.

Which to Choose?

• Match the inlet position (side or bottom) to your existing cistern port.

Siphon Replacement

In the UK, older cisterns use a siphon flush mechanism rather than a drop valve. The siphon consists of a plastic body containing a flexible diaphragm (the "flap"); when you press the handle, the plunger pushes water up and over the U-bend, creating a siphon effect that empties the cistern.

Siphon diaphragms perish over time and in hard water areas limescale accelerates the failure. Replacement is straightforward:

1. Turn off the water supply and flush to empty the cistern.
2. Disconnect the handle link (C-link or wire link) from the siphon plunger.
3. Remove the siphon body — on close-coupled cisterns this involves disconnecting the flush pipe or removing the back nut beneath the cistern.
4. Fit the new siphon and reconnect. Adjust the height if using a telescopic model.
5. Reconnect the supply, refill, and test.

Limescale: The Root Cause of Most Cistern Failures

This constant flow of hard water deposits calcium carbonate (limescale) on every internal surface — float valve diaphragms, valve seats, siphon bodies, and overflow fittings.

The effects are cumulative:

• Float valve diaphragms harden and crack, causing the valve to run continuously.
• Valve inlet ports partially block, slowing fill time.
• Siphon diaphragms stiffen and fail to create a seal.
• Overflow fittings corrode and discolour.

Faren F200 Anti Scale Descaler for Toilet Cisterns (1L) is a continuous-action formula added to the cistern water. It works by inhibiting calcium carbonate crystallisation on wetted surfaces — preventing new scale from forming and softening existing deposits over time. Water Regulations and Approved Fittings

Under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, all float valves installed on mains-fed cisterns must prevent backflow. A 1/2" BS 1212 Part 1 or Part 3 valve achieves this through its integral air gap. Do not use a non-approved valve on a mains supply — this is a Water Regulations requirement enforced by water companies and relevant to any notifiable plumbing work.
