Twin and Earth Cable — Sizing Guide, BS 7671 Colour Codes, and Circuit Applications for UK Electricians
Twin and earth (T&E) cable is the backbone of UK domestic wiring. Used on virtually every fixed installation circuit — from lighting to ring mains to cooker feeds — getting the cable size right is non-negotiable for compliance with BS 7671 and for safe, lasting installations. This guide covers cable sizing, colour identification, and circuit application rules so you can select the correct T&E cable every time.
What Is Twin and Earth Cable?
Twin and earth cable (also written T&E or 6242Y to its British Standard reference) is a flat, grey PVC-sheathed cable containing two insulated conductors and one bare earth conductor. It is used exclusively for fixed wiring in domestic and light commercial installations — not for flexible applications or pendant drops, which require 3-core flex.
The construction is:
- Line (brown): current-carrying conductor, brown insulation (post-2004 harmonised colours)
- Neutral (blue): return conductor, blue insulation
- CPC (bare): circuit protective conductor (earth), uninsulated — must be sleeved in green/yellow at each termination point
Pre-2004 colours (pre-harmonisation): Red = line, black = neutral, bare = earth. You will still encounter these on older installations. Under BS 7671 Regulation 514.14, both colour schemes remain acceptable in existing installations, but should not be mixed in new work without clear labelling at each point where they meet.
BS 7671 Cable Sizing Chart — T&E for Domestic Circuits
Current-carrying capacity depends on installation method. The most common domestic method is clipped direct to surface (Method C) or enclosed in insulation (Method B). The table below gives standard capacities for 6242Y T&E clipped direct (70°C thermoplastic):

Note: All values assume ambient temperature of 30°C and no grouping with other cables. Apply correction factors (Appendix 4, BS 7671) where cables are grouped, buried in insulation, or operating in elevated temperatures.
Which Cable Size for Which Circuit?
1.0mm² Twin and Earth
The standard cable for domestic lighting circuits protected by a 6A MCB (Type B). A typical UK lighting circuit serves up to 12 points (BS 7671 limits by design load, not by number of points). With LED loads now common — averaging 5–10W per fitting — a 1.0mm² circuit at 6A will serve far more points in practice than in the incandescent era. Use 1.0mm² for:
- Lighting circuits, including loop-in and junction box wiring
- Signal and extra-low voltage circuits (when acting as the supply cable)
- Short radial circuits to single small appliances (shaving points, extractor fan control)
Where lighting circuit runs exceed approximately 25m on a 6A breaker, voltage drop considerations (BS 7671 Chapter 52) may require uprating to 1.5mm².
1.5mm² Twin and Earth
1.5mm² T&E is used where a 10A or 16A MCB is fitted and the run is too long for 1.0mm² to maintain acceptable voltage drop. Common uses:
- Long lighting circuits in larger properties (protected by 10A MCB)
- Immersion heater circuits where load is confirmed below 3kW and run is short — although 2.5mm² is more commonly specified for immersion heater circuits protected by a 16A MCB
- Storage heater radials on 13A or 16A circuits
- Extractor fan and bathroom accessories where a dedicated radial circuit is installed
Note: BS 7671 Table 41.3 requires that where a 16A MCB protects a 1.5mm² circuit, the maximum earth fault loop impedance is 2.73Ω to achieve disconnection within 0.4 seconds on a TN system. Always verify Zs before energising.
10mm² Twin and Earth
10mm² T&E is specified for electric shower circuits (8.5kW and 10.5kW showers) and where a 40A or 45A MCB protects the circuit. It is also used as a main cable feed in smaller sub-distribution installations. Key applications:
- 8.5kW electric showers — typically protected by 40A MCB, 10mm² required
- 10kW and 10.5kW electric showers — protected by 45A MCB, 10mm² essential
- Large cooker circuits exceeding 45A nominal load (uncommon in domestic)
- Radial circuits to large garage or workshop sub-boards
10mm² T&E is heavy cable. Ensure back boxes and consumer unit tails have sufficient capacity. Most MCB terminals accept up to 16mm² — verify manufacturer's specifications. Always use correct termination ferrules when connecting into busbar blocks.
Applying Derating Factors
The tabulated values above assume ideal conditions. BS 7671 Appendix 4 requires you to apply correction factors in the following situations:
- Grouping (Ca): Multiple cables touching in a bundle. Two cables together = factor 0.80. Three cables = 0.70. Factor applies multiplicatively to tabulated capacity.
- Ambient temperature above 30°C (Ct): In roof spaces or heated plant rooms. At 40°C, capacity reduces by ~10%. At 50°C (e.g. above recessed lighting), reduction may be 20–25%.
- Thermal insulation (Ci): Cable enclosed in insulation — reduce tabulated capacity by 50% for cables surrounded on all sides (Method A rating applies).
In practice: cable concealed in a plasterboard partition with another circuit alongside it and passing through loft insulation may have an effective capacity of 50–60% of the tabulated value. Always calculate before selecting cable size.
Voltage Drop
BS 7671 Regulation 525.1 limits voltage drop to 3% of nominal voltage for lighting (7.2V at 240V) and 5% for power circuits (12V at 240V). Use Appendix 4 voltage drop tables (mV/A/m values) to check. As a rule of thumb:
- 1.0mm² at 6A: voltage drop acceptable up to approximately 30m
- 1.5mm² at 16A: acceptable up to approximately 20m
- 2.5mm² at 32A (ring): total ring length can be up to 100m
- 10mm² at 45A: acceptable up to approximately 15m from consumer unit
Sleeving the Earth Conductor
The bare CPC in T&E cable must be sleeved in green/yellow PVC sleeving at every termination point — junction boxes, ceiling roses, accessory back boxes, and the consumer unit. This is a legal requirement under BS 7671 Chapter 51 and the Building Regulations Part P. Failure to sleeve earths is one of the most commonly noted defects on EICR inspections.
Green/yellow sleeving is sold in pre-cut bags by conductor size. Carry both 1.0mm and 2.5mm sleeving as a minimum. For 10mm² cable you will need larger bore sleeves — available as pre-cut lengths.
Junction Boxes for T&E Cable Terminations
Where T&E cable must be joined, extended, or branched outside a back box, a junction box is required. Under BS 7671 Regulation 526.3, all connections must be:
- Enclosed in an appropriate enclosure (e.g. junction box)
- Accessible for inspection and maintenance (not buried in plaster without access)
- Made with connectors rated for the circuit current
Maintenance-free junction boxes (containing WAGO-type terminals) avoid the above accessibility requirement under the provisos of BS 7671 Regulation 526.3 — they are designed to be sealed and buried. Standard screw-terminal junction boxes must remain accessible.
Terminal ratings: a 20A junction box is suitable for 1.0mm² and 1.5mm² circuits. A 30A or 32A junction box is required for circuits protected by a 20A+ MCB using 2.5mm² cable.

View ProductCommon Installation Mistakes to Avoid
- Running 1.0mm² to sockets: 13A socket circuits require a minimum of 2.5mm² on a ring protected by a 32A MCB, or 4.0mm² on a 20A radial. Never use 1.0mm² for socket circuits.
- Ignoring grouping: Bundling three circuits together through a joist hole without applying derating factors is non-compliant and a fire risk.
- Not sleeving earths: Every bare CPC must be sleeved at termination points. Non-compliance is noted on every EICR.
- Overloading a 1.5mm² lighting circuit: 1.5mm² at 10A for a lighting circuit does not automatically allow you to run socket outlets off the same circuit. Lighting and socket circuits must be separate.
- Not verifying Zs before energising: Always measure earth fault loop impedance after installation to confirm the MCB will operate within the required disconnection time. This is mandatory under Part P notification and IET Guidance Note 3.
