If you work in plumbing or drainage, access plugs are one of those fittings you reach for constantly — but they rarely get explained properly. This guide covers everything a trade plumber needs to know: what they are, which size to use, when building regulations require them, and how to fit them correctly.

An access plug (also called an access point, rodding eye, or inspection plug) is a removable screw-cap fitting installed in a waste pipe run. It gives you a way to rod out a blockage, inspect the pipework, or clean out a trap arm without having to cut the pipe open.
They are standard in commercial installations and increasingly required in domestic drainage under Part H of the Building Regulations. Any change of direction greater than 45° or a run longer than 6 metres (without another access point) should include one.
Which Size Access Plug Do You Need?
Access plugs must match the pipe bore exactly. Using the wrong size creates a restriction and risks a joint that leaks under pressure. Here is the sizing breakdown for above-ground waste drainage:

For domestic above-ground drainage, 50mm is by far the most common size on main horizontal runs feeding into a soil stack — making the Aquaflow 50mm Access Plug a trade van staple.
Screwcap vs Push-Fit vs Solvent-Weld Access Plugs
There are three main jointing types for access plugs in plastic waste systems:
Screwcap (solvent-weld socket, removable cap)
The standard type. The body of the fitting is solvent-welded into the pipe system. The cap screws in or push-twists out for rodding access. This is what you want on a finished installation — the plug is permanently part of the run but the access point remains serviceable. The Aquaflow 50mm range at APM uses this design.
Push-fit
Useful on low-pressure domestic runs where solvent welding is impractical. Less common for access plugs specifically — solvent weld gives a more durable, Code-compliant joint on long horizontal runs.
Full-bore push-fit rodding cap
Used on 110mm soil pipes and underground drainage — a large screw-off inspection cover on a push-fit boss. Essential on soil stacks at ground level for drain rodding access. Stock both the 110mm soil pipe version and the above-ground 50mm version: they are completely different fittings.
Where to Fit an Access Plug
Part H Building Regulations and good practice say to provide access wherever the run cannot be rodded from another point. In practical terms:
- At every change of direction over 45° on a horizontal run
- At intervals no greater than 6m on straight horizontal runs
- At the foot of each stack (soil pipe) — typically a 110mm access boss
- At every junction where a branch joins a main horizontal run on commercial installs
On a simple domestic job — say, a kitchen extension with a new sink and dishwasher — you will typically need one 50mm access plug at the nearest horizontal bend before the stack connection.
How to Fit a Solvent-Weld Access Plug
- Cut the pipe square and deburr with a trimming knife
- Dry-fit the access plug body — check it seats fully into the socket
- Slightly roughen the spigot with wet-and-dry, clean with acetone or MEK
- Apply solvent cement to spigot and socket in one smooth motion — do not overload
- Push home immediately, give a slight twist to spread the cement, hold for 30 seconds
- Wait minimum 1 hour before pressure-testing (24 hours in cold weather)
- Screw in the cap and test that it moves freely with a rodding bar
No PTFE or jointing compound is needed on a screwcap plug body — it is a solvent joint, not a threaded seal. The cap usually has a rubber face seal; replace it if the rubber feels hardened.
Colours: Black, White, or Grey?
Plastic waste fittings come in three colours:
- Black — ABS solvent-weld (common in commercial and older runs, bonds well in cold)
- White — PVC-u solvent-weld (the standard domestic colour in UK housing)
- Grey — PVC-u (used by some manufacturers; compatible with white PVC-u)
Always match colour to the existing pipe run so the solvent cement bonds to the same polymer.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrong size: A 40mm plug in a 50mm run will rattle loose. Always match bore exactly.
- Omitting the plug on a long horizontal run: If the run blocks, the only option is to cut it out — expensive on a finished job.
- Using push-fit where solvent is required: Long horizontal runs can generate back-pressure that pushes a dry-fit joint apart over time.
- Ignoring the cap seal: On renovation jobs, old access plug cap seals may have hardened and will weep when the system fills.
