Circuit breakers protect your wiring and connected equipment from overcurrent and short-circuit faults. Understanding the difference between MCBs, RCBOs, and consumer unit boards — and knowing when to use each — is essential for every domestic and light-commercial electrical installation in the UK. This guide covers circuit breaker sizing, Type B versus Type C curves, the 18th Edition Amendment 3 consumer unit rules, and how to select the right protection for every circuit.

What is an MCB?

A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is a resettable overcurrent protective device that trips automatically when a circuit is overloaded or experiences a short circuit. Unlike a fuse, it resets by flipping the toggle back to the ON position once the fault is cleared — no rewiring or fuse replacement needed.

MCBs protect the cable conductors, not people. They do not provide shock protection against earth fault currents. For shock protection you need a Residual Current Device (RCD) — either on the consumer unit board or as an RCBO on individual circuits.

Type B vs Type C MCBs

The most important MCB characteristic after current rating is the trip characteristic:

  • Type B — trips at 3–5× rated current. Standard for domestic circuits: lighting, ring mains, radials, immersion heaters. The most common type in UK homes.
  • Type C — trips at 5–10× rated current. Used for motor loads with high inrush current: air conditioning units, pumps, compressors, and large fluorescent lighting installations.
  • Type D — trips at 10–20× rated current. Industrial applications: welding equipment, X-ray machines, large transformers.

For virtually all domestic work, Type B is correct. Type C is specified by engineers only when inrush current would cause nuisance tripping on a Type B.

MCB Current Rating — Standard Circuit Sizes

BS 7671:2018 Table 4B1 provides the current rating to cable cross-section relationship. Standard UK circuit MCB ratings:

  • 6A — lighting circuits (1mm² or 1.5mm² T&E). Limits fault energy; multiple circuits recommended for larger properties.
  • 10A — bathroom heater, secondary lighting circuits, or garage circuits.
  • 16A — ring main sockets circuit (backed by 2.5mm² T&E), kitchen appliance radial.
  • 20A — dedicated radial for kitchen appliances or outdoor socket circuits.
  • 32A — electric shower (typically 8.5kW–10.5kW at 230V), dedicated cooker circuit.
  • 40A / 45A — electric cooker with hob, or larger showers (45A for 10.8kW+ units).
  • 50A / 63A — EV charge point (7kW EVSE requires 32A MCB, but future-proofing or three-phase installs use larger ratings).

What is an RCBO?

A Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent (RCBO) combines MCB overcurrent protection with built-in 30mA RCD earth leakage detection in a single module. It gives every circuit its own independent RCD protection.

RCBO advantages over a shared RCD board:

  • Only the faulted circuit trips — not every circuit on that RCD rail
  • Fault tracing is immediate (you know exactly which circuit failed)
  • No nuisance tripping caused by accumulated leakage across multiple circuits
  • Simpler wiring: one cable to one device, no load rail distribution

When RCBOs are required: BS 7671:2018 regulation 411.3.3 mandates RCD protection at 30mA for all socket outlets up to 20A, all circuits in zones (bathrooms, bedrooms, outdoor), cables buried <50mm without mechanical protection, and circuits in domestic premises supplying a building to which a person may not have access (garages, outbuildings). An RCBO board effectively satisfies all these requirements without the limitation of shared RCD rails.

Type A vs Type AC RCDs and RCBOs

Modern inverter-driven appliances (EV chargers, variable-speed motors, washing machines, and induction hobs) can produce DC fault current components that prevent Type AC RCDs from tripping correctly. BS 7671 Amendment 2 added requirements recognising this:

  • Type AC — detects sinusoidal AC fault currents only. Adequate for traditional resistive loads.
  • Type A — detects sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC fault currents. Required for EV chargers (OLEV LEVI grant mandates Type A), inverter-driven appliances, and new socket circuits per Amendment 2 guidance.
  • Type F — also handles high-frequency components; specified for some frequency-converter loads.

When fitting an RCBO to an EV charger circuit or socket ring serving inverter-driven appliances, select Type A. Axiom and Wylex compact RCBOs are widely available in Type A.

18th Edition Amendment 3 — Metal Consumer Units

Since January 2016 (and reconfirmed in BS 7671:2018 Amendment 3), all new consumer unit installations in domestic premises must use a consumer unit with a metal enclosure. This follows fire safety investigations showing that plastic boards could contribute to fire spread if an internal arc fault occurred.

Key requirements for new consumer unit installations:

  • Metal enclosure (steel or aluminium) — plastic boards no longer permissible for new installs
  • Split load arrangement with SPD (Surge Protective Device) recommended, mandatory in some circumstances per Amendment 3
  • All circuits individually protected with RCD (RCBO board or dual-RCD arrangement)
  • Suitable IP rating for location (IP2X or IPXXB minimum for accessible terminals)
  • Consumer unit must be accessible for resetting (typically 1.6–1.8m height)

A full consumer unit replacement triggers a full EICR of the property and a Part P notification (or Building Control sign-off) for the installation.

Selecting a Consumer Unit — Key Decisions

Number of ways: Count all existing circuits plus allow headroom. A standard 3-bedroom house typically needs 8–10 ways; 12-way boards provide growth room for future EV charger, solar PV, or additional circuits.

Main switch rating: Standard domestic consumer units use a 100A main switch. Most properties are on 60A or 80A supply fuses, so 100A gives adequate headroom. Properties with high-load appliances (electric heating, large EV charger) may require 125A.

RCBO vs dual RCD: RCBO boards cost more per circuit but provide superior selectivity. Dual RCD boards split circuits across two RCD rails — cheaper but if one rail's RCD trips, multiple circuits go down. For new installs and rewires, RCBO boards are now standard practice.

Garage consumer units: A separate two-way or four-way board for a detached garage provides isolation, allows earth continuity to be maintained separately, and satisfies Part P requirements for outbuilding circuits. Pre-populated garage units (with MCBs fitted) simplify installation.

Replacing an MCB — Procedure

  1. Confirm main switch is OFF and prove dead with an approved voltage tester on all three terminals (line, neutral, earth)
  2. Note the existing MCB rating, type, and manufacturer — DIN rail pitch and busbar profile must match the board
  3. Release the cable conductors (usually screwdriver into cage clamp) and remove the old MCB from the DIN rail
  4. Fit the new MCB of matching amperage and type, engaging the busbar clip first, then clipping to DIN rail
  5. Reconnect conductors to the correct terminals (line to top, neutral to separate neutral bar)
  6. Test the circuit with the main switch ON before applying load

Important: Only competent persons may work on consumer units. Under Part P of the Building Regulations, consumer unit replacement is notifiable work. Use a registered electrician or self-certify through a competent person scheme.

Common Faults and Tripping Issues

MCB won't reset / trips immediately: Live short circuit or ground fault on the circuit. Isolate all loads, then reset with load removed. If it resets with no load, add loads back one at a time to identify the fault. If it trips with no load, the cable itself is damaged.

Nuisance tripping without apparent fault: Accumulated earth leakage across multiple aging appliances on an RCD rail. An insulation resistance test (IR test at 500V DC between conductors) will identify degraded wiring. Alternatively, fit RCBOs to distribute circuits and identify the contributing circuit.

RCD trips but MCB doesn't: Earth fault current is below the MCB trip threshold but above 30mA RCD sensitivity. This is correct operation. Find the fault — it will be a damaged flex, faulty appliance, or wet socket outlet.

MCB trips on reconnection of appliance: Appliance fault. Disconnect, test the appliance separately. If the appliance tests clear, check wiring integrity between consumer unit and socket.

Surge Protective Devices (SPDs)

BS 7671:2018 Amendment 3 regulation 443 introduced an assessment requirement for SPDs in all new and rewired domestic installations. Where overvoltage could cause injury or significant economic loss, an SPD is required. In practice, most domestic rewires now include a Type 2 SPD installed at the consumer unit.

An SPD diverts transient overvoltages (lightning surges, switching surges) to earth, protecting connected equipment. They fit in a spare way on the DIN rail or in a dedicated enclosure next to the board.
