Ceiling roses and batten holders are among the most frequently replaced components in domestic electrical work. Whether you're rewiring a Victorian terrace, converting a pendant light to a batten fitting, or replacing a cracked ceiling rose on a loop-in-loop circuit, understanding the wiring configurations and fitting types is essential before you start. This guide covers 3-plate ceiling rose wiring, BC batten holder variants, loop-in-loop vs junction box methods, and how to select the right fitting for the job.

What Is a Ceiling Rose?

A ceiling rose is the plastic or porcelain fitting that mounts flush to the ceiling and provides a wiring termination point for a pendant light. In the UK, the standard 3-plate ceiling rose has three separate terminal blocks arranged on a base plate:

  • Loop-in terminal (live feed): Takes the permanent live from the circuit and loops it on to the next rose
  • Switched live terminal: Carries the switched live from the light switch back to the rose
  • Neutral terminal: Common neutral for all conductors

A fourth earth terminal is provided for CPC continuity. The pendant flex drops from a hook or strain relief in the base, with flex cores connected to the switched live and neutral terminals.

The 3-plate ceiling rose has been the standard for UK domestic lighting since the mid-twentieth century. It is designed specifically for the loop-in-loop wiring method, which eliminates the need for junction boxes on each circuit.

Loop-in-Loop vs Junction Box Wiring

There are two accepted wiring methods for domestic lighting circuits in the UK:

Loop-in-Loop (Ceiling Rose Method)

In loop-in wiring, all circuit connections are made at each ceiling rose. The radial or ring cable runs from rose to rose, with the switch cable dropping to the wall switch from each rose. Advantages:

  • All terminations accessible at each fitting — no hidden junction boxes in the void
  • Complies with BS 7671 requirement that joints are accessible (Reg 526.3)
  • Fewer cable runs than junction box method in some configurations
  • Standard 3-plate ceiling rose (brown/blue/green-yellow for T&E twin) wiring is straightforward

Junction Box Method

In the junction box method, the circuit cable runs to a junction box (typically in the ceiling void), and individual cables drop to the rose, switch, and continue to the next fitting. This is often used where:

  • Multiple lights share a single switch drop
  • Batten holders replace ceiling roses (batten holders have no loop-in provision)
  • LED downlights or recessed fittings are used instead of pendants

When converting a pendant ceiling rose to a batten holder or downlight, a WAGO junction box above the ceiling provides the termination point.

3-Plate Ceiling Rose: Wiring Procedure

Wiring a standard 3-plate ceiling rose with T&E cable (twin-and-earth, brown/blue/green-yellow):

  1. Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and prove dead with an approved voltage indicator
  2. Feed the circuit cable(s) and switch cable through the cable entry holes in the rose base
  3. Connect the permanent live conductors (brown) from incoming and outgoing circuit cables to the loop-in terminal block
  4. Connect the switch live (brown conductor from switch cable, sleeved brown or marked with brown PVC tape) to the switched live terminal
  5. Connect the switch neutral return (blue conductor of switch cable, which carries switched live — sleeve blue with brown tape to indicate function) to the switched live terminal
  6. Connect all neutral conductors (blue) to the neutral terminal
  7. Connect all earth conductors (green/yellow) to the earth terminal and ensure the rose is earthed if it has a metal hook
  8. Connect pendant flex (brown to switched live, blue to neutral) at the flex terminal block
  9. Secure the pendant to the strain relief

Important: Under Amendment 1:2011 to BS 7671, all non-standard conductor functions must be identified. The blue switch return conductor in a two-core switch cable must be sleeved brown to indicate it is live when the switch is on. Failure to sleeve is a C3 observation on an EICR.

Types of BC Batten Holder

BC (Bayonet Cap, B22d) batten holders are used where a fitting is mounted directly to the ceiling surface without a pendant drop. The lamp is pushed and twisted into the BC cap. Key variants:

Straight / Upright Batten Holder

The standard T2 batten holder mounts flat to the ceiling with the lamp socket pointing straight down. Available in 3-terminal configurations (loop-in provision) or 2-terminal. The 3-terminal version allows a switched live and neutral to be wired directly, with an independent feed terminal for ceiling fans or combined fittings.

Angled Batten Holder

The angled (or angled short skirt) BC batten holder positions the lampholder at an angle from the mounting base. This is used in garages and outbuildings where a lamp needs to be angled towards a workbench or door, or where the cable entry is from the side of the fitting rather than above.

Batten Holder with Ceiling Rose

Some batten holders incorporate a ceiling rose base, providing a combined fitting that accepts a pendant flex below and makes the same 3-plate wiring connections above. This is useful when replacing a traditional pendant rose with a batten fitting while retaining loop-in wiring — no junction box required.

T2 Rating

All batten holders in this guide are rated T2 (temperature rating), which means the fitting is rated for lamps that produce higher case temperatures — essential for compact fluorescent and some LED retrofit lamps. Standard T1 holders are rated for cooler lamps and should not be used with higher-wattage incandescent or CFL without checking the fitting's maximum wattage.

Wiring a Batten Holder

Batten holders used in a junction box circuit are typically 2-terminal fittings (switched live and neutral only, with a separate earth tag):

  1. Run the switch cable from the junction box to the batten holder position
  2. Connect brown (switched live) to the L terminal
  3. Connect blue (neutral) to the N terminal
  4. Connect green/yellow earth to the earth tag on the fitting body
  5. Secure the base to the ceiling with appropriate fixings into a joist or cavity anchor

For 3-terminal batten holders, the circuit live can be looped through the fitting, eliminating the need for an external junction box on simple circuits.

IP Ratings and Bathroom Use

Standard ceiling roses and BC batten holders are IP20 rated — suitable for dry indoor use only. They must not be installed in:

  • Zone 1 (above bath or shower tray to 2.25m from floor)
  • Zone 2 (600mm horizontal from bath or shower tray edge, to 2.25m)
  • Areas subject to water jets or steam

Maximum Lamp Weight and Load

UK ceiling roses are rated by maximum suspended weight:

  • Standard plastic 3-plate ceiling rose: typically 2 kg maximum pendant weight
  • Heavier pendants, multi-lamp chandeliers, or ceiling fans require a suitable suspension hook rated for the load and fixed into a joist or appropriate ceiling anchor
  • BS 7671 Regulation 559.6.1.5: fittings supporting luminaires exceeding 3 kg must be fixed independently of the ceiling rose

Always check the pendant weight against the rose and hook rating before installation.

Part P Notification Requirements

Replacing a like-for-like ceiling rose or batten holder on an existing circuit is exempt from Part P notification under Schedule 3 of the Building Regulations. However:

  • Adding a new lighting point to an existing circuit is notifiable in most cases
  • New circuits in any room are notifiable
  • Any work in a special location (bathrooms, shower rooms) is notifiable regardless of scope
  • Always issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for like-for-like replacements to evidence safe completion
